    Pentax now shipping Stormtrooper K2000

I don’t care that I already have an all black K2000, I want the limited edition all white DSLR. As a reminder, the white K2000 comes with a DA-L 18-55mm lens and DA-L 50-200mm lens. All that can be yours for $680. Want. Bad. → Read More

Nikon D400 term popping up as search term

Chances are that Nikon is prepping another dSLR dubbed the D400. Now, if that camera is going to be a 24MP, touchscreen wunderkind, that’s something altogether different but at least the model name seems to be correct. The term D400 is starting to return search results with accessories that matches a Nikon camera showing that some data inputers are at least using the model number as a tag or keyword. → Read More

CrunchDeals: Pentax slashes prices on DSLR kits

For a short period of time this month Pentax is offering an in-store rebate of $100 towards the purchase of various kits. This promotion actually started on the 1st of the month and runs till the 22nd, so you better act quickly. Based on the press release it only looks like this offer applies to the K2000, which happens to be a fine entry-level and backup SLR. I’ve been using one for the last week and it’s performed quite well. Look for a review in the coming weeks. → Read More

    Review: SensorKlear Loupe

It’s notoriously hard and scary for amateurs to clean the image sensors inside digital SLRs. Just by touching the delicate surface of the sensor you risk permanent damage or misalignment, which is why some DSLRs now offer dust detection and removal software – they basically say don’t touch the dust, the computer will interpolate the missing portions of the image. Me, I just pour a little cleaning fluid in there, swish it around, and keep shooting. This does nothing good for the longevity of the camera. → Read More

The Nikon D400 to include 24MPs and a touchscreen?

The Internet tubes have been rumbling about a new, high megapixal Nikon dSLR coming sometime this year and that rumor just got a little more official with a list of specs. The detailed list certainly seems feasible with a 3.5-inch touchscreen and dual SD/CF storage slots, but the 24MP spec throws up some questions, expessially if this digicam is to be called the D400. → Read More

New camera made from socks, takes great pictures

Remember the sock monkey? I mean, everyone had one of these right? Normally made by your grandma, if was a monkey made from grey and white socks, and stuffed with cotton batting. Usually had buttons for eyes, and the red material was positioned to form the mouth and butt of the monkey. Well, sock art has evolved over the years, and now people are being even more creative. → Read More

Pre-sale begins for 'Stormtrooper' Pentax K2000 DSLR

Last month, Pentax announced that a limited run of white K2000s would be coming and they’re now up for pre-order on Pentax’s online store. It won’t actually ship until mid-February, but I’m told it’s going to be a small batch so I’d jump on this if I were you. Assuming you’re in the market for a new DSLR.

    DIY: A cheap flash diffuser

Properly controlling your dSLR’s flash is a good first step in becoming a great photographer. Most dSLR’s flashes are just so harsh and external flashes are just so expensive, so what’s a photographer on a budget to do? A little help from a piece of Velum and a piece of tape is all you need to diffuse the built-in flash. Eventually though, you are going to have to cave to the urge and purchase a full size flash with a built-in diffuser. ‘Till then though, this should work fine. → Read More

    CrunchDeals: Nikon D90+18-55mm+55-200mm= $1,299.99

I just got back from a run to Costco (Redwood City) and took a quick spin through the electronics section and spotted this deal on the D90. Well, I think it’s worthy of a CrunchDeal since I haven’t come across this specific combo at a comparable price on the Web. → Read More

Help Key: How to get out of helping people with their new Christmas presents

Your brother just got a new digital camera. Your mom got a GPS device. Your grandfather got a Falcon Northwest gaming rig with six cores and a graphics card that requires its own physical plant. You’re stuffed, sleepy, and just want to watch TV. How do you distract these hordes long enough to get in another turkey sandwich and viewing of A Christmas Story. Follow these easy steps: → Read More

    Pentax's albino K2000 looks like a Stormtroopercam

The same aesthetic that works for Canon’s L-series and Rocky Road ice cream seems to be doing all right for Pentax as well. The K2000 is a solid camera, and this unique look could take a few people off the fence. The real question (if you care so much about how your camera looks, you poseur) is how non-black-and-white lenses will look on it. Pentaxes are great because there’s a huge variety of lenses, but if they all look dorky on your white body (I’m talking about your camera’s body), what’s the use? → Read More

Nikon D3X hands-on, worldwide release this Friday

As Nikon’s new flagship model, the successor of the D3 – or “the Boss” as photo nerds call it – the D3X has plenty of new features for a lot of money. The first part of a recent showcase in Budapest, Hungary was a 30-minute long presentation of the D3X, comparing the D3X to the D3. We were also able to confirm that the “world premiere” will be this Friday, December 19th. Let’s see some details. → Read More

Rumor: New Pentax K20D to have GPS

A Greek camera site has set the world afire with rumors of Pentax’s new K20Ds being equipped with GPS units. Observe: Πλέον στην έκδοση κιτ K20D + GPS Tracker είναι η τέλεια DSLR της αγοράς για όσους ταξιδεύουν! Nothing could be clearer! As the K20D is already weather-resistant, a GPS unit would make it that much more attractive to, for example, nature photographers.A more… legible press release is supposed to be showing up some time soon, but Pentax had as of this writing was a new pair of binoculars and a rifle scope being announced. I’ll keep you updated. → Read More

In the UK, Nikon is top dSLR manufacturer

Nikon is now the top dSLR maker… in the UK. It was able to increase its sales there by some 333 percent compared to its 2004/05 performance. Why you’d compare it to sales figures from four years ago, I don’t know. Presumably because this news was announced at a D3x event, and the number 3 was a motif of the show. It wouldn’t look as neat if they compared it to a year where it works out to 82 percent growth (a completely made up number), now would it? Canon won the “war,” if we’re to paint the sales competition between the two largest camera manufacturers with military colors, last year (2007/08) by a one percent margin. But then they were exiled to Elbe, so, you know… → Read More

The Olympus E-30 gets a brief hands-on – existence still questioned

The digicam gurus at dpreview.com got their hands on an Olympus E-30 DSLR and still didn’t reveal how the $1,500 prosumer cam will stand out from the crowd. Sure, it sports a new 12.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor, a new processing engine, and some in-camera software editing functions, but are those enough to sway potential buyers away from similar priced, but far superior, Canon 50D or Nikon D90 – I don’t think so. Maybe when reviews are posted, it will review that the camera is some sort of wunderkind. → Read More
