We will hold tomorrow’s TC/CG/MC meet-up at the Cafe del Sol, Av Paral.lel 182, right down the street from the Fira. I’ve received quite a few emails already but RSVP with the subject line “BCN MEET-UP” to john @ crunchgear.com so I can put together a head count. Apparently a bunch of strangers in a law office wasn’t quite a good idea. Remember: this is TOMORROW, Feb 13 at 6pm. [Map] → Read More

As you’ve probably noticed, CrunchGear got a makeover for Xmas. Gone is the sickly yellorange color scheme, and we’ve made some changes to how things are organized as well; things should be much easier to find throughout the whole site. You’ll also notice that comments are now threaded, so no more of this “@ asshat” stuff we’ve been doing the last year. In addition, you can rate comments and, if you so choose, view only those above a certain threshold that you decide. There’s a “profile” button next to each commenter’s name, you can see what else they’ve been up to. You’ll also notice a new home for BFF, CruncGear’s reader’s site, on the right hand side. That’s for you, use it. There’s a lot more as well, but you’ll have to poke around and find it yourself. We’ve redone it with you in mind, so feel free to use the comments on this post to let us know what you like, don’t like, hate, love, whatever. The rest of the TechCrunch network will be getting a similar treatment in the next few weeks, so whatever you’d like to see, this is your chance to give us your input. Big shout out to ACS for the design work, to Alex King from Crowd Favorite for the development assistance, and Media Temple for dealing with us as we upgraded. We’ve got a little before-and-after action for you after the jump. → Read More

Using the Blog Readability Test tool shows that the articles contained herein are accessible to people with at least an elementary school reading level. Go ahead and plug in your own blog and some of the sites you read on a regular basis. It’s strangely addictive. I was hard-pressed to find another site that was written at the same level as ours. Most of the ones I plugged in were at least at the junior high level, many were high school level, and a few were "genius" level. While some might be quick to conclude that our low level reading requirements could possibly be the result of shoddy journalistic workmanship, we’d prefer to think of our little corner of the web as a place that’s warm and welcoming to even the littlest readers around. Actually, the thought of an elementary school-aged child reading anything here is horrifying. The Blog Readability Test. What level of education is required to understand your blog? We’re sorry about the slow load times and stretch between posts, but we’re doing some maintenance on our servers today to handle our increased capacity. Hopefully we’ll have everything back to normal shortly. In the mean time, you can look at this photo of this awesome dude virtually shredding. → Read More
As Doug recently reported, Eye-Fi is 2GB SD device with a built-in WiFi transceiver. Like many of you, I hadn’t heard of the device until earlier this week and then, like so many things, it was seemingly everywhere. Mike Galpert of Aviary Twittered about it’s brilliance, friends were chattering on about it, people were trying to trade sexual favors to try it, etc. Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on one and maintain my chastity (at least what’s left of it). → Read More
Mmmmm… prizes Manhattan’s Red Sky last night played host to a gathering of geeks and geek sympathizers the likes to which the world has never seen (at least not this week, granted it was only a Monday night — but that’s neither here nor there really. You get the point.) Anyway, the occasion? The CrunchGear One Year Anniversary Celebration, of course. What else could have drawn such an odd amalgamation of minds? I actually don’t have an answer to that question and I’m not sure that one even exists. → Read More

Gentle reader, I know you’ve been patient. You can’t wait to see our take on the iPhone (you’ve heard of it, right?), and you’ll get it. In short order, Yours Truly will be live blogging from my favorite local AT&T store with pics and video. In addition, we’ll be reviewing our little friend some tonight, with a glut of information tomorrow. While today is launch day, we’re more about celebrating the insanity. Tomorrow, you get the goods. I know, I know, reading a blog on a Saturday. Well, we don’t get ours till then, nothing we can do about that. But look for coverage the likes of which you won’t get at those other two blogs, because at CrunchGear, you’ve got me, and I’m awesome. Just so’s you know. → Read More
Our godfather site, TechCrunch, is two years old and we here at CG want to thank Don Arringtono for making this one of the best ALMOST years — we’re one in August — of our lives. We may not always show it, but his hard work and trust in this little team makes us all feel great and it’s an honor to work under such a respected overseer. Thanks, Mike. I bet that you, me, and even Dupree all use Google for our web search. But when it comes to mobile phone-based searching, it’s really anyone’s game. Know why? Because I’m trying to make a call or send 300 texts within the next hour and I really don’t have time to use my phone for searching. In fact, chances are, if I actually have a WAP or Internet plan for my phone, I probably already have a wireless device that can render full HTML websites in all their glory. → Read More
