Asus confirms: "killer" product coming in early June

We noted a few weeks ago that Asus would be putting out a sweet tablet during Computex Taipei, and now the internet is all a-twitter after their CEO re-confirmed this.

He seems pretty optimistic — but the real question is whether they can bring it to market. I mean, I saw the Eee Keyboard more than a year ago and it’s still not in my living room. Can they really make this tablet happen? → Read More

The surprisingly affordable Asus G73 gaming laptop now available in the States

Asus’s monsterious 17.3-inch G73 gaming notebook made a splash at CES but American availablity and pricing wasn’t mentioned. Good news though. Newegg’s selling ‘em right now and you want one. → Read More

Asus has the first Nvidia Optimus laptops~!

Kudos, I guess, to Asus, being the first manufacturer to incorporate Nvidia’s Optimus technology into actual products. The Taiwan-based company has announced five laptops (note: I refuse to use the term “notebook” when referring to laptops; I think the name “netbook” is dumb, too, so at least I’m consistent) that range in size from 13.3 inches to 17.3 inches, all of which use Optimus. “What is Optimus?” I’m glad you asked! It switches between the Nvidia GPU and the Intel integrated GPU as the situation warrants. So, using Firefox? Let the Intel handle it. Playing World of Warcraft? Nvidia takes over. It’s not too hard to understand. → Read More

Asus beat to EEE Keyboard market by knockoff

Bad news for Asus, the EEE Keyboard that still hasn’t been released yet was beaten to market by a clone. The knockoff version is made by the Chinese company Great Wall, and while the clone version did beat the original to market, there are some serious reasons to wait until Asus releases their version. → Read More

Asus getting into the e-reader game in a big way

Asus leaked some information recently about their upcoming e-reader, the DR-570. Not content to be a “me too” with the standard black and white e-ink product, it looks like they are going to be coming out with an OLED offering that might just kick the rest of the e-readers to the curb. → Read More

Is Asus killing off the Eee Stick?

The Asus Eee Stick might be dead, folks. According to a Digitimes report, the company has slashed the development department down to only 20 team members from the original 100 and more cuts might be coming. Long story short, the department isn’t delivering the goods. I mean, have we ever seen a good use of the Eee Stick? It’s not like the Eee netbooks were ever that great at gaming. → Read More

ASUS and Toshiba winners of reliability survey, don't ask about HP

SquareTrade, proprietors of extended warranties, just released a 3-year study that sheds some light on the reliability of laptops and netbooks. The main conclusion that 1 in 3 notebooks fail within three year should come as no surprise. After all, they are portable computers that get banged around. It’s the nature of the beast. However, the study does reveal some other interesting tid-bits, including a handy graph the shows the malfunction rate of the top nine laptop manufacturers. → Read More

Bad news, good news: Eee Keyboard delayed, but it's getting the old touchscreen back

I amaze myself sometimes. You see, I have so much power as a writer on this invincible and influential blog that sometimes I can change an entire industry with but a word.

Case in point: apparently my recent post on Eee’s decision to change the touchscreen to resistive on their Eee Keyboardwas so crushing that they’ve altered their entire business plan and delayed the device to accommodate it. O Mighty Blogger! Thou humblest the world! → Read More

    Asus' U3S6: First USB 3.0 + SATA 6.0 PCI-E card

Not that USB 3.0 will be useful anytime soon—how long did it take manufacturers to finally get behind USB 2.0?—but Asus’ U3S6 should be, provided it’s not cancelled, the world’s first USB 3.0 + SATA 6.0 PCI-E card. Better news: it’s only $30. → Read More

Eee Keyboard gets touchscreen "updated" to resistive

Remember when everything had a capacitive touchscreen, and we decided we really hated those and we wanted resistive ones that required styluses? Me neither. That’s why I’m a little puzzled as to why the Eee Keyboard, which had a perfectly workable capacitive touchscreen when I gave it its first hands-on in January, has been changed to have a resistive screen and integrated stylus. It’s like they produced a concept car, and then when they put it into production, they gave it wooden wheels. → Read More
