Alienware launched the third generation of their ultraportible gaming rig a few weeks back and it just landed on my desk. As advertised it’s small, although not thin, notebook that screams of its Alienware pedigree. There are two glowing alien heads, loads of multicolor lights, and top of the line specs. It’s clear without even turning it on that this thing is serious about performance.
Proper reviews take time. They require living with a product and shouldn’t be based on just first impressions. However, first impressions are still worthwhile and that’s what follows regarding the M11x R3. I’m just happy the notebook arrived before my trip to E3. Portal 2 on the plane FTW! → Read More
The rumors over the last few months all pointed to new Alienware models. Then they appeared on Dell’s European site and were all but officially announced. Pocket-Lint now reports that Dell confirmed with them that the the M18x and M14x will be announced sometime today. Both will of course cost a bit more than their pedestrian Dell counterparts as they’re loaded with the latest mobile gaming hardware. The M14x will likely start out around $1,500 with the beastly M18x commanding a price north of $2,000. The only question now pertains to when Dell will make them official and release all the details. Today? Tomorrow? Oh the madness! → Read More
Milk it! The already-full Alienware notebook line is soon getting a new big brother in the form of an 18-inch gaming monster. The M18x briefly appeared on Dell’s Canadian site and listed all the pertinent information including the pricing and specs. Yeah, this big boy doesn’t come cheap, but it’s certainly a mobile powerhouse just like the M17x. → Read More
The Alienware M11x is a fun little beast. It’s touted as a full-fledge portable gaming system and the current generation fits that marketing label with a 1GB discrete NVIDIA GPU. But the model’s Core 2 Duo CPU is getting a little antiquated. Dell-Lab just posted what they claim are the preliminary specs for the next incarnation. Yeah, if these specs are the real deal, the M11x R3 is going to be a fun little beast that will eat your face. → Read More
Klipsch, which was recently acquired by Audiovox, is stepping up its presence in the PC gaming scene. Its speakers are found in the just-released Alienware M17x gaming laptop, itself perhaps most famous for its inclusion of Nvidia-powered 3D graphics. → Read More
Oh Alienware, how could you do this to me? My favorite Alienware sub-compact laptop (the M11x) comes out on sale just when my wife expects me to spend money on gifts for the family. That’s right, the 1GB Nividia driven 335M 15″ gaming laptop that Devin wasn’t a complete fan of, but that was before they fixed the video chipset. The M11x starts at a quite reasonable $599, and then goes up depending on the additional goodies you want to add (like that that Alienware branded backpack). Now how to find $599 without telling the wife. → Read More
I’ve expressed my opinion on, as I put it, this performance NIC nonsense. But it’d be silly to pretend that if you’re interested in the best performance possible, you shouldn’t lay out out a little extra to make sure every piece of your computer is optimized. Alienware knows people like doing that, and they’ve partnered Bigfoot to offer the Killer 2100 NIC in their desktops. More good news: they’ve reduced the price to $80, which is much more reasonable (though not nearly low enough for me) than the $129 it was a few months back. If you’re a performance junkie, it might be worth the extra bills. But I’ll stick with my dusty old on-board ethernet and budget cabling for now. → Read More
When we ran our review of the Alienware M11x a few months back, there were a couple of things that really didn’t sit well with us. They had decided on the older Nvidia chipset (which forced you to basically shut everything down to change from discrete to active video) and you were somewhat limited in what CPU options were available. Well, no longer. → Read More
One question that has come up ever since the M11x was released was why didn’t Alienware use the Nvidia Optimus chipset. The chipset that Alienware did use makes switching between the integrated and discreet graphics rather awkward and jarring, and a less then ideal user experience. Well, the rumor rattling around the pipes today is that the M11x may be getting a refresh this summer, and that new chipset may be coming our way. → Read More
Short version: It’s not an all-in-one gaming solution, but for under $1000 it’s a sleek and relatively powerful machine with a few compelling features. Hope you like LEDs. → Read More
We’ll have a full review of Alienware’s pint-sized gaming machine, but in case you guys haven’t seen enough pictures of it (or there just wasn’t enough bokeh in those other sites’ shots), I’ve put together a nice little gallery for you. I’m happy to take more pictures too if you want close-ups of this or that. → Read More
Did you hear about the UFO that appeared for nine straight days over Lake Erie? It’s been identified as Alienware’s Area-51 powered by Intel’s just-announced 6 core i7-980X CPU and we have the pics to prove it. → Read More
The Alienware M11x is a fascinating modern notebook. May I say that it probably took “out-of-this-world technology” to pack so much power into a little kit? Get it? Because it’s an Alienware. You got? Yes, I know I’m dumb. John tells me that every day. Just click through for the photos, pal. Let’s get on with this. → Read More
Short version: The Aurora ALX is quite possibly the fastest computer I’ve ever used. It is in a word, amazing. The water cooling, thermally reactive venting system, and lighting combine to make a system that runs great, looks amazing, and has some innovative features that make you go “duh. why didn’t I think of that?” Of course performance has its price, and you will have to pay a premium price for this system. → Read More
Get ready home shoppers, Alienware is going to be paying you a visit at 1am Eastern time on the 6th. Apparently, showing up on geeky TV shows and at Blizzcon isn’t enough, so Alienware is going to be selling it old school: on QVC late nights. → Read More
The Alienware M11x is an odd duck. The company calls it a netbook, but it’s packing a Core 2 Duo CPU and 1GB NVIDIA GT 335M GPU. Even the 720p-capable 11.6-inch screen doesn’t exactly screen netbook. Then there is the target $899 price that just knocks it the hell out of the netbook realm. So, yeah, let’s just call the M11x what it is: an ultra-portable. → Read More
