Yesterday, Acer’s Taiwan Sales Manager said of their tablet lineup, “They are aimed at phasing out netbooks… That’s the direction of the market.” Today, Acer has amended that statement, saying “According to recent statement from Sales Manager based in Taiwan, Acer Inc. confirms that the company will not phase out netbooks in favor of tablets.”
Well, that’s all cleared up, then! → Read More
In an interview with Mobilized today, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci mentioned that they are working to create a Windows Phone 7 powered handset.
Gianfranco also talked about why they originally turned to Android (over Windows Mobile 6.5), and why Windows Phone 7 has them interested again.

Acer has unveiled a new “concept device” that they think represents the future of laptopping. I’m not so sure. And while some of all this depends on how well the keyboard and gestures are executed in their custom UI, I don’t think people are quite ready to go all-touchscreen just yet. For a smartphone it’s one thing, but when you’re trying to put all your computing on a touchscreen, it could get hairy.
The Iconia has two 1366×768 capacitive touchscreens, one in the usual place and one where the keyboard would be. Doesn’t that sound fun? You’re not sure? Yeah, me neither. → Read More
Acer had been quiet about their tablet plans. There were hints along the way but nothing even leaked out in a traditional fashion. But that all changed today at an Acer sponsored event where *shocker* they introduced three proper tablets and a smartphone that’s nearly a tablet itself. → Read More
Acer is announcing a set of five touch devices under the Iconia line including Windows 7 touch tablets and laptops as well as an Android model. Our cousins at Engadget have a liveblog going on as we speak. Apparently there will also be a tablet “app store” available for those inclined to put all their eggs in one basket. → Read More
Well this is peculiar. It looks as if Microsoft has tried, in effect, to use some of its influence to prevent Asus and Acer from creating Android- and/or Chrome OS-based devices. It’s doing so by tacking on royalty fees for Taiwan-based manufacturers (such as Asus and Acer) in order to use some of their patents relating to e-mail and multimedia. HTC, the other big Taiwan manufacturer, has agreed to the new licensing regime. → Read More
Acer is locked and loaded for a total assault on the tablet market. The company’s CEO told the WSJ that it has a whole series of tablets ready for a NYC launch event on November 23rd. Said tablets are supposed to be sold between $299 and $699. And that’s where the fun facts stop. Mr. Gianfranco Lanci didn’t mention how many tablets were coming or when they would be available. Nope, just the announcement date and price made the report. → Read More
Do you need an all-in-one? Nah, probably not, but that won’t stop Acer from plopping out two new models, a 21-incher and an 18-incher for $700 and $500, respectively. They have touchscreens and run an Intel Atom processor. They have 2GB of memory and nice fat hard drives to play back all those pretty HD videos in the kitchen. → Read More
Acer clearly didn’t get the memo that netbooks are dead. The latest update to the Aspire One line brings modest updates. Perhaps they know something we don’t. → Read More
Acer CEO Scott Lin believes netbooks are not dead and that they’ll see about 40 million units sold in 2010 and a similar number in 2011. He expects the high performance Atom N550 from Intel to increase speed and reduce price to about $300, which is pretty darn cheap. → Read More
Acer’s AspireRevo has started shipping to the US. The new small form factor computer was announced earlier this month, and looks to be a viable machine for someone looking for an inexpensive computer. → Read More
We know that Acer has been planning on the release of two tablets, 7 and 10-inch form factors, but now there’s new details about a third form factor. That’s right, another size, smaller than earlier mention; a 5-inch Acer will now join the lineup. → Read More
This is a pretty insane-looking machine. Of course, they’re not the first to try it; Toshiba’s Libretto W100 is already out there, but dual 7-inch displays aren’t the same as a full-size laptop like this. Can this design possibly work at this form factor? I thought the Courier idea worked mainly because it was small enough that using it like a laptop wasn’t possible. But we’re looking at two 15″ displays on this Acer beast, bizarrely with trackpad emulated as well. [via Electronista] → Read More
As we mentioned earlier in the summer Acer plans to release an Android-based tablet. Now Acer’s Taiwan president, Scott Lin, has just said that Acer is excited to be making their tablet PCs Android-based – something to compete with the iPad. Acer will be releasing a tablet PC, based on the Wintel platform, later this year. If the market responds positively, they will release the Android version early in 2011. Acer is still focusing on it’s smartphone segment, and will ship two million in 2010 and expects 5-6 million in 2011, with the majority running Android. → Read More
We’re expecting a slew of Chrome OS devices over the next few months — HTC is supposed to have a tablet cooking, and we’ve heard a few ideas about what the first Chrome OS laptop would be — and Acer has always figured prominently. These reports seem to re-confirm Acer’s role. → Read More
This is the Acer Aspire One D255. It’s a netbook—they still make those?—that runs both Windows XP and Android. Handy if you need it, I suppose. → Read More
Aupeo, the music streaming service, has partnered with Acer so that its application will come pre-installed on the latter company’s future line of Android phones. The first of which is Acer’s recently launch flagship, appropriately named ‘Stream,’ a device that features an AMOLED 3.7 inch screen, HDMI port, 1GHz processor, and Dolby Digital sound, amongst its impressive specs.
Aupeo integration goes a bit deeper than simply having the app ‘on-deck’ as it were, with it becoming part of the phone’s media player, enabling users to pick from the service’s 100 editorially-maintained channels offering “music for every taste and mood”. That’s the free version but there’s also a premium component too. → Read More
Here’s another iPad alternative..well two..maybe; Acer 7 and 10-inch tablets running the new verision of Android, Android 2.2. If announced, the devices are rumored to get flash support and sport ARM chipsets. It’s speculated that Acer is shopping around telecom providers to package with the devices, because clearly, they want to compete with the iPad. Expect 3G on this all-out media tablet, and look for a possible carrier subsidized data option. → Read More
