With over 75 million users, it’s hard to remember a time without Spotify. But there was. A time when we were all mulling the aisles of Target for new CDs. A time in our lives where we all became thieves on Napster. A time when iTunes forced us to buy songs for $2/piece. And then came Spotify.

2005

Spotify’s a big deal now, but once upon a time it was just two guys in an apartment. The first time Daniel Ek met Martin Lorentzon at his house, Martin slept on a bare mattress with just a laptop. Here they come up with the name “Spotify”.

The first few months are spent working from Ek’s apartment. Even during the winter it’s almost 80 degrees inside the apartment because of all the servers running. The duo are forced to sit around half-naked so they don’t sweat to death.

Spotify is officially founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon in Stockholm, Sweden.
