Rocket Fiber Launches 100Gb/s Internet Service In Downtown Detroit

Downtown Detroit has a new ISP: Rocket Fiber is today detailing its upcoming fiber optic internet service, which it brags are 1,000 times faster than the current average internet connectivity in Detroit. Businesses can sign up for 100Gb/s service while consumers are limited to 10Gb/s in residential buildings.

This service doesn’t come cheap, though. It costs $70 a month for one gig residential service and $300 for the 10 gig options. Business pricing is done through a custom quote.

Rocket Fiber was founded 18 months ago and has so far wired its service into nearly two-dozen office buildings and several residential ones. The company now has 30 full-time employees and expects to expand to Midtown Detroit in 2016.

“Rocket Fiber’s mission is to develop and implement critical technology infrastructure that will contribute to transforming Detroit into one of the most attractive cities for technology and other businesses to locate,” says Rocket Fiber Chief Technology Officer and Co-founder Randy Foster in a prepared statement. “Ten-gigabit Internet will put Detroit in an elite category in which technology startups and growth companies will naturally and quickly emerge inside its borders.”

Funding for the new venture came from Quicken Loans and Rock Venture Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert.
