Marissa Mayer is expecting twins, but the Yahoo CEO and former Google executive isn’t planning to take a significant break from work during or after her pregnancy.
In a personal post on her Tumblr, that Yahoo-owned blogging site, Mayer explained that — as she did when her son was born early in her tenure — she plans to take “limited time” off of work. Initially, as a newly arrived CEO, she took just two weeks of leave for her son’s birth in 2012, a decision that was controversial and much criticized for being so short. Mayer didn’t specific exactly how much time she is planning to take this time around:
Since my pregnancy has been healthy and uncomplicated and since this is a unique time in Yahoo’s transformation, I plan to approach the pregnancy and delivery as I did with my son three years ago, taking limited time away and working throughout. I’ve shared the news and my plans with Yahoo’s Board of Directors and my executive team, and they are incredibly supportive and happy for me.
With “hard work and thoughtful prioritization,” she plans to handle Yahoo’s “renaissance” as well as additions to her family, which is all set to triple its monthly active children count.
TechCrunch isn’t TMZ, we don’t cover celeb news, but Mayer leads a major technology company and is a high-profile woman working in tech, so naturally many of her decisions — and particularly how she balances work and family life — are noteworthy. Certainly, carrying — and then caring for twins — in addition to a highly charged CEO role at a prominent tech company in transition (and raising another child) is quite the workload.
Mayer took charge of Yahoo in 2012, and her most notable moments have included the $1.1 billion purchase of Tumblr, a strategy to handle the Alibaba investment issue, and the acquisition of numerous small and early-stage companies to build out Yahoo’s technical and engineering teams.
