Social Publishing Service Wattpad Hacked, “Some” Passwords May Have Been Exposed

It looks like Wattpad, a site where authors can share their writing and interact with readers, was hacked a couple of months ago.

The company has been sending out emails to some users alerting them that their information may have been compromised. (I have a Wattpad account, but I didn’t get anything.)

In an emailed statement, Wattpad shared a few details about what happened:

On May 29, we identified an attack against our platform. After subsequent review of the incident, we learned that account details and passwords for some accounts may have been exposed. We are contacting all users who may have been affected and urging them to change their passwords as a precaution. We have also implemented additional security measures to prevent an incident like this from reoccurring.

Update: A Wattpad spokesperson added a couple points of clarification. First, they said the exposed passwords were encrypted. Second, they said the company believes a few million accounts were exposed, out of 40 million monthly uniques and more than 60 million registered users.
