Kamcord Raises $15M As It Ramps Up Its Expansion In Asia

Mobile video game recording service Kamcord has raised a $15 million Series B round of funding from GungHo, Tencent, Wargaming and several other investors. This follows a $7.1 million Series A in May of this year, and precedes a major expansion in Asia planned for next year.

Back in October, Kamcord told TechCrunch that it had opened an office in Japan to facilitate more deals like that with Japanese game developer Mistwalker for Terra Battle. Now, Kamcord co-founder Aditya Rathnam says the company is looking to triple in size by this time next year, from 23 employees to somewhere in the 60s.

Much of that push will come in Japan, where Rathnam says Kamcord will expand by improving localization and lining up more deals with the role-playing and puzzle games that Japanese gamers tend to record. While Kamcord already had Japanese language support, Rathnam says there is still work to be done to make sure players see lots of content in their language.

After that, Kamcord hopes to push into Chinese and South Korea, both of which will require team members with intimate knowledge of their rapidly growing mobile gaming markets. In addition to again dealing with localization and finding the kinds of games that lend themselves to social recording features, Rathnam notes that Kamcord will also need to find a new infrastructure for its launch in China, as Amazon Web Services isn’t ubiquitous there.
