Months After Appointing A New CEO, Bitly Gets A New CTO And VP Of Marketing, Too

Link shortening and analytics company Bitly is announcing the hire of two new executives — Chief Technology Officer Rob Platzer and Vice President of Marketing Melissa Wallace.

The company’s current CEO, Mark Josephson, only joined last summer, at the same time as Chief Revenue Officer Andrew Beranbom. He told me that Platzer (who previously worked with Josephson at local news startup Outside. In) fills an open position vacated by Peter Miron last year, while Wallace is Bitly’s first VP of Marketing (she previously held the same title at Buddy Media).

Although Bitly is only announcing the hires now, Josephson said Platzer and Wallace have been on the job for several months (in fact, Wallace seems to have been added to Bitly’s CrunchBase profile back in November). He characterized this as part of a larger effort to “reenergize” the company, particularly as it works to sell its custom short links and related analytics tools to marketers. As it does so, the company needs “different skillsets and different talents.”

“We’re hiring across the entire company,” he said.

Bitly is also announcing a partnership with search and social marketing company Moz, which will allow Moz customers to access to Bitly data showing who is linking to any web page and how valuable those links actually are. Josephson said Bitly has “a unique perspective on how people use the Internet, because we have such a ubiquitous view of what’s happening,” and it will looking at other ways to take advantage of that data.

How ubiquitous is it? Well, Bitly says it shortens nearly half a billion links each month, resulting in more than six billion clicks.
