Astronaut Marc Garneau Says We Need Risk-Ready Deep Pockets To Fund Space Innovation

As Rafiki from the Lion King once said, “It is time.”

Nokia is gearing up to make a big announcement with little-to-no mystery baked in. Leaks abounded for the Nokia Lumia 1020 in the past few hours, which we’ll undoubtedly meet in real life for the first time today.

But what else can we expect? Is Instagram potentially heading to the Windows Phone platform? Perhaps Path?

We’ll have all the answers for you very shortly, so sit back, relax, and enjoy yourself some good, old-fashioned live blogging.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:50 am

Thanks for tuning in.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:50 am

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:50 am

See you guys later. It’s hands-on time.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:50 am

The stage opened up behind him into this awesome room with champagne. BONUS!

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:50 am

Last words from Elop: the single most important component of a camera, is the twelve inches behind the camera.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:50 am

The price of representing third place comes down to Nokia, not ATT. He really didn’t answer the question but he sure kissed ATT’s behinds. He said this launch will be better than any before.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:49 am

He’s saying that this is a fundamental issue for Nokia, not for ATT. It’s using a different operating system. The third alternative for an OS is Windows Phone, and Nokia wants to stand for that.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:48 am

What have you done to make sure this terrific phone doesn’t get the same crummy treatment from ATT. This lady is saying ATT is an awful partner to Nokia. It’s intense. How will elop respond.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:46 am

Other than camera, says Elop, a lot of it comes down to Windows Phone 8. He also remembers all the great things about the Lumia 920, like screen display, unibody design, etc. which have carried over to 1020.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:46 am

Question: OTher than the camera, what differentiates the 1020 over the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4?

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:46 am

Question: When will you come out with one for MIddle East? Elop says through the end of the year it will go to various markets in ME.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:45 am

Elop doesn’t want to spoil Telefonica’s surprise.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:45 am

Special Telefonica version of the Lumia. Can you tell us more about that?

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:45 am

Micorosft ATT and Nokia will make a big push. In-store promotion, advanced trailing of sales reps, big push toward this. Indirect channels? Yes. Got the nod from PR lady.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:44 am

Question: Will phone be available through ATT secondary channels? Will you see promotion around it?

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:44 am

In every market around the world, we see leading technology become more popular. For smartphoners and photographers, this appeals to those people. One aspect of Nokia’s strategy: this is a flagship device. Our engineers identify how elements of this innovation adn technology can be scaled down to a lower price point. So you should look for that, after we lead with this flagship. -Elop.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:43 am

Does this phone and camera appeal to developing markets?

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:42 am

We have a white paper available. Uh ok. Available on the press site, says the PR lady.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:42 am

Take up to 7 pixels from the sensor, when you combine you create a super pixel, with much more information. To have low noise, sharp images, helps in color processing, quite a lot of data. That’s high level.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:41 am

Question: Explain oversampling technology.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:41 am

They have guests with paddles to let us have microphones for questions. Paddles. Ooh lala.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:41 am

HE seems to be done. Now there’s a lady on the stage. She seems like the master of ceremonies.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:40 am

The grip will be available at the same time for $79.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:40 am

After the U.S. debut, it will hit markets around the world, China and Key European markets, and Latin American markets, this quarter.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:39 am

Availability: Lumia 1020 is available in retail starting July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year agreement. Whoa. Expensive.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:39 am

Today AT&T sells more Windows Phone than any other carrier, says De La Vega.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:38 am

Cinemagraph app demo from the 1020, which has been updated for the Lumia 1020 camera.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:37 am

He says it changes the way you think about zooming. Now I zoom after I take the picture with the Lumia 1020.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:36 am

AT&T says they’re very proud.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:36 am

Apparently AT&T originally told Nokia to slim it down at one point.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:36 am

AT&T CEO and President Ralph De La Vega.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:36 am

Bringing it to AT&T first, then elsewhere.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:35 am

They’re also releasing a special grip to take pictures with.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:34 am

It seems you can upload to Instagram from Oggl, but doesn’t seem to be a native Instagram app this time around. Sorry Windows Phowners.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:32 am

Flipboard, Hipstamatic, Oggl Pro.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:32 am

New Path app confirmed. Built tailored for the 1020.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:32 am

CNN, Vyclone, Yelp, foursquare will all be using the SDK. for Zoom.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:31 am

Nwo for developers. New SDK for the camera phone.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:30 am

Makes a dig that AT&T partners may not be so thrilled about the Maps as they don’t require data.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:30 am

Location-based augmented reality demo. She pans around the room to see where there are flower shops, and their distances. Then she pauses, and is able to manipulate the pan again. From there, she can do another search, maybe for coffee, and see results for that.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:29 am

Demoing Nokia Maps. Kristina is searching for flowers in NY.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:28 am

Free Nokia Music. Free Here Maps and Drive. There are now 165,000 apps in Windows Phone.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:28 am

Windows Phone 8 confirmed. As if there was a question.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:27 am

I love when people demo the audio experience in these big live events. It’s coming through the house sound system. Does no one else see this as odd?

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:27 am

Showing video of their sound engineer. Who “moonlights as a disc jockey”, says Elop. Lawl.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:26 am

Super meta.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:26 am

They’re taking a four-second exposure picture. And they spelled out 1020 using those four 1020s. Very cool.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:25 am

They’re doing a long exposure in low light.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:25 am

Another live demo of the Lumia 1020, on a tripod, and the engineers each holding two lumia 1020s. It’s a lot of phones.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:25 am

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:24 am

You can mess with one at a time, or all of them, and it gives you an instant preview of the shot.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:24 am

Settings for WB, auto, exposure, manual, etc.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:23 am

Nokia Pro Camera, a new camera application that lets you “shoot like a pro”

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:22 am

He’s heading off reviews at the pass.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:21 am

They save two images. One is the original, giant image, and the oversampled image. He’s explaining that this takes longer than most other cameras.

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20138:20 am

Nokia engineers demonstrating zoom

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:17 am

He’s talking about how you can zoom after the fact, and still get amazing detail.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:17 am

Now Zoom: you can zoom into something that you can even see with your own eyes. Damn.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:16 am

The Lumia 1020 is MUCH better. But remember this is Nokia’s test.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:16 am

Putting a picture of the Samsung Galaxy S4, vs. iPhone 5, vs. Nokia Lumia 1020. It’s an action shot, with flash, in low-light.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:15 am

Now we’re talking about Xenon flash. He’s showing a picture he took in this dark room. Time for the comparison.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:15 am

Now he’s showing video of ships passing by, as he was standing on a boat. “Amazing implications of having image stabilization with a high-res sensor”

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:14 am

There was concern originally over whether or not they could use floating lens technology with a huge 41 meagpixel sensor. Apparently they could.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:14 am

Now onto optical image stabilization: Elop says that there are tiny coils that hold the sensor in place even if your hand shakes. “floating lens technology”.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:13 am

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:13 am

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:13 am

She’s apparently a bee keeper, but she said the video helped her understand that bees are slightly furry and carry pollen on their hind legs. Curious.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:13 am

Now she’s talking about video she shot of bees from further back, but zoomed in.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:12 am

In laymen’s terms, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio 41-meagpixel image is captured, and simultaneously, a 5-megapixel oversampled image is created, which means that seven MP are packed into each single MP. You see where we’re going.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:11 am

“41 meagpixel ultra-high resolution back-side illuminated sensor” He’s upset he had to learn how to say that.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:10 am

The ability for Nokia to create better imagery is to use oversampling.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:10 am

They’re attractive.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:10 am

Now he’s bringing up a few important people to talk about the PureView camera technology. They are both leading experts in their field. He welcomes Dr. Kristin Bjorknas and Dr. Juha Alakarhu.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:09 am

Still boasts unibody design, and he is talking up the thinness of the phone. No exact specs given on that though.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:08 am

“Continues Nokia’s color story: Yellow, black and white”

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:08 am

Elop is talking about how the Nokia Lumia 1020 is going to change the way we take pictures.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:07 am

Naming official: Lumia 1020.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:07 am

Man, that big old black camera on the back is quite loud. We’re excited to take a look at how it works as opposed to its design.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:07 am

There she is. Looks exactly like those leaked press shots this morning.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:06 am

It’s exciting. Intense music for this video intro.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:06 am

Here we go. We’re seeing that massive pure-view lens, but it’s turnin ginto some sort of laser filled space ship.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:06 am

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:05 am

Today he’s introducing the latest in smartphone technology, he says.

Jordan Crook July 11, 20138:05 am

But even after all of these innovations, with optical image stabilization, xenon flash, etc. we’re not done, he says.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:04 am

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20138:03 am

Stephen Elop takes the stage, explaining Nokia’s understanding of our passion for pictures.

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20138:02 am

“Today, the way we capture a moment is about to change.”

Chris Velazco July 11, 20138:02 am

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20138:01 am

Taking us through a history of photography.

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20138:00 am

10, 9, 8. 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 …

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:59 am

It’s starting.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:57 am

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:56 am

“The conference will start in 4.1 minutes.” Funny, you.

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:50 am

11 minutes to go. The clubby jazz beat has picked up, presumably to stoke our excitement / collective caffeine buzz.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:29 am

The press room is slowly but surely filling up. Meanwhile, Nokia seems to be playing music from a Pure Moods album.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:27 am

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:25 am

Feel-good photos of coffee shops, guitar jam seshes, and parks sliding across the screen. I think they like photography or something.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:21 am

Get it guys? 41? Nokia, you slay me. (If you don’t get this, consider yourself lucky for missing all of Nokia’s incessant teasing.)

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:20 am

“Good morning. The press conference will start in 41 minutes.” Quiet cheers from the crowd.

Eliza Brooke July 11, 20137:18 am

Soothing ambient music and college-style individual desks in the auditorium. Are they trying to lull us into a sense of complacency?

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:16 am

And by “we,” I mean liveblogger extraordinaire Jordan Crook, intrepid intern Eliza Brooke, and that other guy, Chris Velazco.

Chris Velazco July 11, 20137:15 am

Hey y’all, we’ve just picked up our name tags and snagged some front row seats! The event is slated to start in about 45 minutes, so hang tight — there’s some big stuff in the pipeline.
