With the updated models of Motorola’s flagship phones, the company did not surprise us a lot. It did what it knows best: putting big batteries in Android phones so you can enjoy long hours of 4G LTE use.
A 4.7-inch display should raise some warning flags for those who like small phones. But the major argument behind Motorola’s line-up is that you don’t need an external accessory to power your device from the moment you wake up until you come home. Motorola showed us pictures of the iPhone 4S with a battery life-extending Mophie case to illustrate this point.
When it comes to specs, the Razr HD has a 2500mAh built-in. It puts the device in the upper bracket of the Android landscape. But the Razr Maxx HD is even more impressive with a 3,300mAh battery.
Yet, we had the opportunity to test the devices after the presentation and the Razr Maxx HD feels bulky. It has everything you need to feel that you have a strong device in hand with Kevlar on the back. The screen is both scratch-resistant and water-repellent. Motorola thinks it has the most resistant screen on the market.
But do you need all of these for a phone that you will keep for two or three years? The answer will depend on the type of user you are, but I’d rather have a smaller phone such as the Razr HD, even if it means less battery life.
The dimensions of the Razr HD are quite impressive with a thickness of only 8.4mm — iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are 9.3mm thick. And of course, these two phones come with 4G LTE connectivity, which is becoming the norm for Android phones.
The screen on both devices look great. As with other 4.7-inch phones, it feels big and could be a potential drawback if you have small pockets. When using the devices, everything was quick and responsive. The 1.5GHz dual-core processor helped a lot.
Chrome now comes pre-installed with every Motorola device and you can count on Google’s support for these phones — an important argument if you want your devices to be updated one day.
In a few words, if you want a thin and powerful Android device, you should get the Razr HD. If you need a big battery because you are often far from a power source, the Razr Maxx HD is for you. Pricing and release dates are still unavailable at this time. They should come out before the holiday.
