A key differentiator in Windows Phone 8 will beĀ an updated start screen, which is an evolution of the current version with customizable tiles for greater personalization.

The new start screen still uses the Metro design language and live tiles still live on but WP8 now offers smaller icons in addition to medium and “double wide” tiles. To resize any tile you simply need to long press to move or scale.

Native icons like the phone tile can now be scaled down and once devs get new the SDK later this summer they’ll be able to tweak the size of their respective tiles. Third-party developers did not previously have access to the double wide tiles, which had previously been reserved for Microsoft, OEM and carrier apps.
