OpenID is a standard for identification. It allows different web sites to use the same user identifier, the main benefit for the user being that they don’t have to remember multiple logins and passwords. Conceptually, it’s like how you can “sign in” to many sites using your Facebook id (technically that’s OAuth and there’s a subtle difference between authentication and identification, but in simple terms it’s the same idea).

Anyway, I digress, to answer your question… OpenID does not tie to the real identity of the person holding it. You can get an OpenID from an open ID provider (such as MyOpenID or Google) usually by just supplying an email address, so it’s still very easy to remain anonymous and yet have an OpenID. However there are situations where it’s important to link your real physical identity to an online account (i.e. government services and banking). At the moment, most government services and banks have their own proprietary solution to this. It sounds like myid.is hopes to provide a standard solution.

IMHO, sounds like a very difficult market…

Security is the single most important thing in your project. And this is also a psychological problem. No trust, no users. Trust is hard to earn and easy to loose.

Take Assange. Even if he’s 100% innocent (which is probably the case), the accusation of rape is never going away. He’s been permanently damaged.

So once there is a rumor that your system is insecure, you’ve already lost a part of the battle.

I agree, I didn’t say it’s our savior from online fraud, I said it would eliminate a “lot” of it, in other words … you hand out your credit card in a shady bar, because you know you can do something about it if the bar owner does something with it, because that bar owner can be tracked and brought to justice, unlike our current online business.

Everything has a downside, but I’d say the upside of this is much better, but everyone would have to be sure that Myid.is is independent, so no government could ask for personal data for no justifiable reasons … sorta like Facebook.

This is a little far-fetched : it’s not like it would stop fraud on the Internet. Someone certifying his ID has probably set everything on his e-commerce to inspire trust. A cheap site with a certified ID owner still looks cheap.
I think there is more to lose than to be gained. With such a database growing and growing and passing from site to site, anonymity could shrink. Tracking could be taken to a whole new level. Consequences will never be the same.

I think you’re taking this the wrong way, you can still be anonymous, but for things that require a verified ID, this could save you the trouble of giving yet another third-party your private bank information … this could potentially eliminate a lot of online fraud because -for example- people will start to buy stuff online from verified people only, which would enable them to pursue the buyer legally if any sort of scam takes place!
