A Web site that illegally generated Microsoft Points has been shut down, but not before costing Redmond a cool $1.2 million in the process. Hackers had discovered an algorithm that would, when called upon, generate Microsoft Points codes at 160 points a clip.

The site was also able to generate codes for free 48-hour Xbox Live Gold membership trials and Halo: Reach avatar props.

Microsoft hasn’t said anything about what it will do to the accounts that used the site, or if they can do anything at all.

Just one of those things, I suppose.
