For Your Protection: Vietnam Bans Late-Night Gaming

Who can forget the delightful Top Gear Vietnam special?

It’s not the best time to be a gamer in Vietnam. The country’s government, by way of the Ministry of Information and Communication, has decreed that ISPs there block access to online games between the hours of 10pm and 8am. No late-night raiding for you, I’m afraid.

The ban is ostensibly in place to diminish the negative side effects associated with excessive gaming, particularly online gaming.

It puts a certain stress on the country’s ISPs, which now have to sit there and monitor traffic all night long.

Never mind that it may backfire. Won’t let me game when I have a few hours free at night? Fine, I’ll just start skipping class then.

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the government has promised a policy review within the year to ensure that everything is working as intended.
