So I learned two things today: companies in Wisconsin make cheese in cans and, more important, once you empty those cans you can make a Canjo. These things, built buy Wisconsin-native John Elwood, have a charming look and great resonance.

“These are three-string, robust instruments, have the scale dimensions of a violin, and are inexplicably pleasant to the ear,” says Elwood. “I blame it on the excellence of the cheese.”

Elwood doesn’t seem to sell his creations but you can build your own with the plans below.
