I kinda agree with Benoit. Its sad to see Nokia in a way “compromise” to the situation. The main thing now is to see whether there is anything positive out of this for the end consumer or is this just Microsoft’s way of adding to its “capability” without enhancing its “ability”.
If Microsoft does not now utilize Nokia’s powerful hardware platform capabilities with Windows Phone, I think it’ll be a waste for both Nokia and the end customer.
I believe this is eventually a win for Open Source. Nokia-Motorola might still be able to beat Apple yet, if they synergize well. But to beat the speed of evolution of an open platform, they better start running hard.
Having worked at Nokia it was obvious that one of the company’s challenges was transforming from a hardware-centric to a software and services company. The culture is hardware-centric so Elop’s strategy to adopt Windows Phone bypasses that issue. The challenge will be to continue to innovate on the hardware side and deliver meaningful differentiation from competing Windows Phone devices.
