Travelmatch debuts travel search engine with backing from Lastminute.com founder

How Is This An RPG Anyway

Travelmatch.co.uk has officially launched a new travel search engine, enabling people to search for holidays based on requirements rather than the usual criteria such as destination, date, cost and period of stay.

The site has been in development for a looooong time – since 2006 – and was funded in 2010 by Lastminute.com founder Brent Hoberman and other investors including David Scowsill, former CEO of Opodo, and John Moulton, founder of Better Capital.

Travelmatch tries to differentiate by letting visitors use temperature, food, drink, children’s facilities and other variables to find appropriate destinations.

According to the company’s founder and CEO, Alex Francis, research shows 70% of people decide what they want to do on their trips before they figure out where they want to go. That may well be true, but the elephant in the room is that it’s going to be a hell of a mountain to climb to establish a new travel search engine in a market that’s long been saturated.

Travelmatch includes videos, pictures, blogs, links to social networks and TripAdvisor reviews for completeness, but the million dollar question is if the site will be able to stand out in the crop of travel-related destination sites and search portals.

In a market where we are seeing ‘online booking’ as actually agencies pushing telephone numbers I still think that we are far off getting the holiday or travel experience we desire. It starts with the end product for a start being way off the mark. Who is actually happy with their holiday these days ?
So finding the best product is the burden still and perhaps this may help. wonder how much they invested and if they will offer affiliate white label solutions to third parties. I see very little web 2 here and they should have consulted more in this area by talking to the travel guru like calvin crane.

Using a ccTLD without owning the corresponding .com? Hello?

It’s like piling money up in the middle of the road and setting it alight. Sadly, branding without first owning the matching domain is all too common in VC-funded enterprises. Throughout the life of the venture, money will have to be spent to correct for such poor decisions.

I couldn’t agree more, incredibly dumb.

What is it about domains that these companies don’t understand the simple realities?

If you are a serious company investing serious time and money into a site, you MUST have the .COM, I don’t care what country you are located in.

I would even go so far as to say that if an online company seeks investment and doesn’t go out of its way to highlight the fact that it doesn’t have the .COM during the due diligence process, they should be personally sued when the company tanks. It’s that important.

It’s a website for UK package holiday affiliate programs. And whoever owns travelmatch.com will be laughing all the way to the bank, as users type in travelmatch.com instead of the .co.uk version, what were the investors thinking?

I typed in my destination in the far east asia, and it took me to package holidays in Egypt, not a good start.

On top of that, it’s not even a new take on things now, it’s taken them so long to develop it, that it’s already been done a couple of times over in the meantime.

Looks like Alex Francis has a lot of explaining to do to David Scowsill, Brent Hobermann and John Moulton.

    What a waste.
