Zimbra, the email and collaboration software that was sold by Yahoo to VMware earlier this year, is debuting the newest version of its SaaS-based email client today.

Zimbra 2.0 includes desktop functionality, designed to give users offline access to their email, contacts, calendar and document management features in one place. You can also download Zimbra’s Zimlets, which are apps that create mash-ups of data from third party sources, to the desktop app.

For example, the Social Zimlet in Desktop 2.0 integrates updates from Twitter, Facebook,
Digg and other social networks. The new desktop version also supports Zimbra’s Collaboration Suite as well as any IMAP or POP-based email account (i.e., Google Apps).

Currently Zimbra offers more than 100 Zimlets for download including translation, CRM, photos, maps and online meeting management apps. The new version also works across many platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux and other operating systems.
