New beta version of Nokia Maps brings Check-ins, karaoke

You may have heard that that Nokia World 2010 is on right now, yeah? You may have seen all the hardware announcements, yeah? Well, it’s not all about hardware, y’see, with Nokia today announcing the latest upgrade to their rather popular Ovi Maps app.

And what new features will this upgrade bring? Well, first up: check-ins. You can now use Ovi Maps to check-in to Facebook, RenRen, StudiVZ and other social networks, as well as share your location via email or SMS, which makes finding your other Nokia friends that much easier.

But wait! There’s more!

Another handy addition is real time traffic-flow information and safety alerts in compatible areas. There will also be public transport maps for 85 cities around the world, to help those that aren’t driving a car.

And finally, the new release will also bring with it gesture input, meaning you’ll be able to pinch to zoom and swipe to pan. This will no doubt come as some relief to existing users.

If you have a touchscreen Symbian^1 or Symbian^3 device, and are keen to get in on the mapping action now, you can download the beta version from Nokia Beta Labs, otherwise a stable release will be out by year’s end.

To see all these features in action (along with some wonderful accents and a bit of karaoke), why not check out Nokia’s promo video, below?
