Because Usain Bolt is like an overclocked person.

Is the ridiculously fast 1 Ghz Hummingbird CPU in the AT&T’s Android-powered Samsung Captivate not, you know, fast enough for you? Do you have a pair of pants you don’t mind potentially burning a hole through? You’re in for a treat.

A few of the endlessly-impressive dudes over at XDA-Developers have been tearing apart the Captivate’s innards, and have managed to crank this thing all the way up to 1.2 Gigahertz. That’s a 20% speed boost — and surprisingly, its developers say things appear to be pretty stable. Furthermore, they’re saying these things (as in all Hummingbird CPUs in all Galaxy S models) can theoretically be revved all the way up to 1.6 Gigahertz, though they’ve yet to really put that claim to the test.

If you’ve got a Captivate handy and you’re ready to void some warranties, you can find all the info here — but be warned: this is probably not something you should be doing without a bit of research. If your battery starts bubbling or your handset melts through your table, through your floor, and then burns right through to the earth’s very center… well, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
