Paul Graham’s Checklist, Would You Make The Cut? [Video]
Evelyn Rusli
Jul 30, 2010

With more than 200 deals since 2005, Y Combinator’s Paul Graham knows how to size up a young team of entrepreneurs. However, he didn’t get it right from day one.

On Friday, we got a chance to talk to Graham after his morning panel with SV Angel’s Ron Conway. He discussed how his strategy has evolved over the past five years and why the balance of power is shifting in Silicon Valley. See videos ahead.

    Good videos. The concept of moving the focus from the idea and more to the entrepreneur is insightful, although there must be some qualitative factors that are assessed against the idea, as well.

    I know exactly what you mean, Paul Graham is so dreamy.

  • ceaseoleo

    seems like there should be another part, because hes cut off at the end of part 2 ?

  • kdkd

    I don’t think that is what he meant.

    I think one of the reasons we are seeing so many start-ups coming from New York right now is that after the GFC a lot of really smart people that would have otherwise pursued a career on wall street are starting to look at different career options.

    New York has always drawn self motivated, smart and hungry people because Wall Street has had the lure of the big dollar pay off. The tech startup scene definitely has those qualities too. This is not the only reason of course, but I think its a contributing factor.

    I don’t think he meant what you thought he meant.

    Please consider porting TechCrunch TV clips to YouTube or some HTML5 compatible format for mobile viewing. Embedded player loads on Android browser but I only get the animated spinning icon.

    The videos don’t load on an iPhone either.

    awesome interview.. there are so many parts of it that resonate now after having setup a successful online business, which i’m sure wouldn’t have before..

    also as someone else mentioned, the interviewer is really good! building up the conversation instead of forcing some pre-researched questions.. wish these vids were longer though..

    NY was a very natural place for the entrepreneurial spirit to spread to, especially in the downturn – lots of talented people who either lost their job or had to put up with a lot of abuse in their job because there weren’t many alternatives. Why not leave and try something on your own, especially if you have the means to support yourself for a while?

    Nice guy.

    New is hot for startups for many reasons, including the following:
    1) Commodization of SW: Internet is more about businesses/business models, and now less about software;
    2) Leadership: Fred Wilson and Paul Graham — leading edge investor make a huge difference;
    3) Necessity: financial meltdown put quite a few smart people to work in startups
    4) Pure size and scale: NYC is the biggest, most powerful city in the US.

    When the scale and size of NYC is combined with the above the byproduct is success.

    A video tip… get a Rycote Softie for your microphone… the ultimate windscreen. No more rumble.
