Jobs: A Free Case For Every iPhone 4 User
MG Siegler
Jul 16, 2010

Today at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, CEO Steve Jobs took the stage to address the iPhone 4 antenna issue. First he rattled of some numbers to show how small the problem actually is. But he also acknowledged that some people are having problems — and they want everyone to be happy. So what are they doing? Free bumpers and cases (as we predicted).

Jobs says that everyone who buys an iPhone 4 through September will get a case for free. He also noted that anyone who has already bought an iPhone 4 will get one for free. And if anyone has already bought one of Apple’s bumpers, Apple will refund the cost.

But Jobs acknowledged that they can’t make their own bumpers fast enough. So how are they going to make good on this promise? By giving away other third-party cases if users want them.

Jobs reiterated that the iPhone 4 antenna issue is a small one but that “we care about every user.”

Expect details about how to claim these free cases to come out soon.

If that’s not good enough, Jobs also noted that they were welcome to return the iPhone at anytime in the first 30 days after purchase with no restocking fee.

That's really funny. I love Apple, but I've got admit, bad move on their part, rushing these phones out. I'll stick with my 3GS.

Sweet! Now let's all complain about not wanting a case in the comments while ignoring all the other stuff he just said at the conference!

I kind of expected Apple to do this given the public response. Now off to the Apple store for my free bumper!

  • Mark

We have no fix, it drops more calls with the new genius antenna, we will give you a 1 $ piece of plastic to prevent you from noticing. Fuck that.

  • Dan Ruby

So then what's happening in September that makes the cases no longer necessary…?

Well everyone called for the free case or a recall… This is the much cheaper option for apple, I wonder if they will box the bumper case with the phone on all future shipments or if users have to actually make a claim (per-say) to get one though???

  • Omar

So what will happen after Sep 30 when there will be no more free cases?

  • Lee

Wait… You have to apply online for a free bumper? Intentionally tedious…

This is standard at a lot of hardware companies – you build a product – tell your sales people to sell – then you realize that there is an issue – but it's too late to pull the plug – so you sell and send a fix everytime you get a support call – This goes easy with non mainstream products, but the iPhone is so main stream that it makes this issue hard to handle without a recall or refund.

3Gs has the same issue genius. ALL SMART PHONES DO

  • iluvcapra

Nothing, he spent 20 minutes asserting with statistics that the iPhone 4 has just as good reception as a 3GS. The bumper is to salve people who were going to keep complaining and didn't want to return their phone. Apple's basic position is that the reception issue is a perception issue, but if giving you a bumper will make you shut up about your anecdotal call dropping, they're happy to hook you up.

What are you talking about? Did not miss the part where Apple is BUYING these cases form other companies and giving them to users for free? They are going to make a TON off this.

So how am I supposed to know if the free case is good enough? By the time I figure out whether the case was good enough, it will be too late to return it.

Also, the cases all suck. At least it will be worth what I pay for it.

  • Billy Shanks

About the best Jobs can do under the circumstances. This problem is too well and too clearly documented for Apple to avoid taking responsibility. His initial suggested "fix" was inane (i.e., to clam-hold the iPhone 4) and he's now stepping up and doing what's right. Buying cases is a relatively cheap and easy fix. The case makers will definitely make more money on this deal than they might have without it but I suspect their margins will be thinner as I'm sure Apple has negotiated their net cost down to the absolute minimum – especially since they'll be sourcing millions of cases here. No way Apple is paying even wholesale from a third-party vendor on this deal.

  • Jim Bob

I am getting an iphone 4 today, do I get a free case at the Apple store? Or do I have to wait and submit my information on their site to get one shipped to me? Anyone know?

No it doesn't genius. Bad antenna maybe but not the same flesh to metal grounding issue.

It isn't actually. Do your research. It is however the highest in sales.

  • http://www.facebook.com/famousryan Ryan Ackerman

  • Scott

What's going to happen after September 30th that they will no longer give away free cases? Do you think there is going to be slightly different hardware, like moving that seam between the antenna's to a better location?

  • Shekar balaguswamy

MG is so full of shit. Same stuff over and over again.

  • Aaron
  • Dude

What about all case vendors they are now screwed

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/Bristow Jeff

My guess is that a bumper case will be in the box of new iPhone 4's sold after September 30th. I doubt they are going to find a real fix for this since the antenna is on the outside of the phone (which I don't see them changing), which is really why the issue is so prominent with the iPhone 4. Other phones have attenuation issues, but not as extreme.

It was also noted, that Apple is also planning to give refunds for those users who bought a '3rd party' iphone 4 case. Provided that they'll give a receipt! lol. Solution to iPhone 4 Problems

I'm relatively glad I still have my iPhone 3GS. It literally drops calls every day, so I don't need the hassle of dropping (on the average) ~1 call/100 more. Oh, btw, my calls drop regardless of where I am, what I'm doing, who I'm with, or how I hold the phone. Most of the time it's sitting on the table next to me, or in my otherwise empty pocket, definitely not in my hand. Once my AT&T contract expires though, I'm outta here and on to evaluating new phones, most likely whatever is the hot android-based phone then. It doesn't really matter to me if the problem is Apple or AT&T. They're married, so they may as well be the same entity.

Oh yeah, and today's press conference? Without checking all the facts, all I can say is my opinion. Masterful spin job, but spinning implies you need to massage the ugly truth.

  • FxF

    "It's a small problem" S. Jobs

Yes, it's such a small problem that Mr. Jobs had to take time from his busy day to hold a press conference addressing the issue. So teeny that Apple is giving away cases and bumpers to fix the problem (ones designed so that the iPhone 4 remains the 'thinnest smartphone on the planet,' presumably?). One so insignificant that Wall St. and Consumer Reports didn't notice it. Oh wait, they did. Is the SpinMeister for real??!

I used to love Apple products, and I still love the 'innovative designs' (some of which others had tried before but couldn't bring to the market successfully) they do sometimes. But increasingly, I'm at a loss to understand how they've been able to get away with bringing products to market with missing features and inadequate testing. Sure, they come out with fixes… for version 2.0 (or later). You know another company that does this? Microsoft. The difference is that M$ gets blasted for those inadequacies, whereas Apple often gets a pass from the public. I hope this debacle gets people (sheep) to change their minds a bit about Apple's image.

  • Dan Ruby

Huh. So they're providing a "solution" to a "problem" that doesn't exist, but the "solution" is only good until September…? And to be honest, he spent 20 minutes asserting that iPhone 4 was just as good as the 3GS at not dropping calls. Reception was never mentioned. Small difference, but a difference nonetheless.

Apple is playing the PR fiddle, and trying to play two songs at once. If there's no problem, why give free bumpers? If there's a problem that the bumpers fix, what's happening in September that makes it no longer a problem?

Don't get me wrong… I love my iPhone (3GS), and would still upgrade to the iPhone 4 if I was contractually able (not eligible for upgrade). But Jobs seems to be the only person saying that the widely-reported problem is no problem at all… and, out of the other side of his mouth, informing the public that they can get free solutions to the nonexistent problem.

If you get return the iphone can you get out of the 2 year contract?? Appreciate your help!

  • owow

NVM, found the answer. If anyone else is interested… http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2366601,00.a...

Basically, you can get out of the 2 year ATT contract only within 30 days.

  • inversesquare

Wow, I'm interested to know about all this 'my calls get dropped every day' people…… I've owned iPhone product for years and NEVER had dropped calls on it PERIOD….. I do live in New Zealand though…… me thinks you people might have a bit more of an axe to grind with your Telco than Apple.

That said, I think I'll be taking my name off the waiting list for iPhone 4 if the fix is 'a case'. When I heard about the antenna in the apple hype videos (pre release) I wondered how they could mange to do what they did without grounding the antenna when touched…… now I know…… lol

Remember when Steve Jobs had those problems at the iPhone 4 release:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoqh27E6OuU

He blamed the networks in this video but if you look at how he was holding the phone……..

iPhone 4 has a problem. A soft case fix is not a 'fix' when your brand represents beautiful design and high quality materials and components that 'just work'.

I'm left handed…… the antenna(s) are on the left bottom corner of the iPhone…… game over….. I'll buy Apple product in the future if it is good (I own quite a bit already) but I think I'll give iPhone 4 a miss.

  • _&e_

HEY … Can we get a cast of the case Gizmodo ripped off their stolen iPhone 4 ?!

  • Michael Wilson

    Citation to YouTube, ah yes.

  • guest2010

so iphone 4 needs a condom to work. jobs deny any antenna problem in iphone 4 but offer free case(icondom) to work. and the ibots agree with their god jobs.

jobs always has a habit of attacking other companies when it comes to iphones limitation. attack adobe when iphone can't support flash and now other smart phones because iphone 4 ha antenna problem.

only ibots(fanbois) will believe you jobs.

  • Bob Smith

So I’m assuming the extra-1000 (on things) dollars they charge us will pay for the bumpers

  • sameer

i can't agreee about the dropping calls because even without a case, my iphone 4 never dropped a call whereas my old iphone 3g would drop calls when used in the same area as the iphone 4. So, the new "Genius Antenna" is apparently doing its job, apart from the whole death zone.

  • sameer

start searching apple's site next week for any traces of an application for the case

  • guest101

What do you think will happen after september 30? Apple will fix the problem somehow?
I dont really want to buy an iphone 4 now , if in 2 months the problem will be fixed.
