Online gaming startup We R Interactive debuts with star backers and founders

Prediction: This Statement Is Going To Come Back To Bite Microsoft In The Ass

We R Interactive, a London-based online games publisher, has turned on the lights, and is on a mission to give birth to a “new generation of interactive and social games that allow players an unprecedented level of control, influence and engagement across multiple platforms”.

The company is headed by former PlayStation and Eidos executive David Rose, ex-ITV Interactive Commissioning Editor Oli Madgett and media analyst Richard Dale.
Rounding out the management team are two of the directors of production company Bigballs Films, Tom Thirlwall and Chris Kelly.

We R Interactive also launches with the backing of Peter Mead, founder of ad agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO,Fru Hazlitt, former Yahoo and Gcap Media boss, and ITV’s new commercial and online director and Eric Fellner, co-founder of Working Title.

It’s hard to asses what We R Interactive aims to bring to the table, exactly, at this point, but here’s the sales pitch:

The founders are committed to a gaming revolution, finally bringing together the film and games industries to develop products the like of which have never been seen before.

We R Interactive will take branded content to a whole new level, creating interactive, social games for smartphones, Facebook and the web. These games create rich new worlds for players, worlds filled with aspiration, dilemma and reward that blur the lines between digital life and real life.

Ok, then. Sounds very exciting, if quite buzzwordy. We R Curious.

I hope their games aren’t as clichéd as their website.

This story is pretty weak _ Next time it may be easier to copy and paste a press release or what they PR hack sent your to cover this.

“Stars” +”turned the lights on” = zzzzzzzzzzzzz

How many ‘chiefs’ do they need until they find one with successful game industry experience? I bet they’re ‘blue-skying’ at every meeting trying to come up with something to match their mission statement.

A harsher reaction than I thought we’d get, but taking the points one by one. We wanted the release to notify key groups about the launch of the company – that way people are at least aware of us by the time our first game launches at the back end of the year. Our first game is well underway, so no blue-skying necessary, in fact the phrase was never used…mainly because we had the idea for the range of games 1st, then we raised the money and now we launch the company. I hope that clears a few things up at least, thanks for your interest so far.

Sound like another no product vc circle jerk, no product or content will be produced, just a bunch of useless executives with no production ability.

So have they built anything yet or is this just a statement of intent?

Why do they have a Google map to their office in the footer of their website? That map is taking up an awful lot of screen real estate for something that’s kind of pointless for a software startup. I could care less where their office is, but would love a screenshot of a game they’ve made.

My guess is that at least half of their dozen or so founders are graphics/marketing people who get off on putting pretty pictures and words together whether or not they make sense. Kind of like this article’s headline to “star” backers that nobody has ever heard of.
