Gaming-Focused Social Network hi5 Raises $14 Million

hi5, a gaming-focused social network that most people forgot about long ago, has just closed a new round of funding of over $14 million led by Crosslink Capital. This brings the social network’s funding to over $34 million. This round appears to also include the $3 million in debt funding raised from Mohr Davidow in April.

The new funding will be used for hi5′s continued expansion into social gaming and virtual goods. Hi5, which has been actively remodeling its site to cater to the gaming industry, just bought gaming startup Big Six. Last fall, the social network launched a totally revamped site that places a much stronger emphasis on games and virtual currency, along with a new avatar system.

In December, hi5 brought on a new president, gaming industry veteran, Alex St. John, to help lead the social network’s efforts. Earlier in the year, the company suffered from layoffs and also hired a new CEO, Bill Gossman.

The push into gaming isn’t a bad idea for hi5, which clearly cannot compete with Facebook. The network has only 60 million members compared to Facebook’s 500 million users. But hi5 faces a number of fast-growing and heavily funded competitors in the social gaming space, including Zynga and Playdom.

The banner ads on the homepage are enough to convince me never to sign up on that page.

There will always be room for second place. The only question is how much money can investors blow on third and below.

Actually saying that people forgot about long time ago is very true.
Some 5 years ago I subscribed but never really tried to use it.
My own guess is that Facebook made a hit because 1st it offered feeds to know about other's activity and 2nd because it opened its platform for third party developers

Yeah I agree with kenasto. Those banner ads on the home page of hi5 are not a good idea. Better remove it and gain some users.

I do not think they have a marketing dept, otherwise they would have advised them years ago.

I'm not sure if Hi5 will ever overtake the mighty Facebook. With Outlook adding social media capabilities to connect to Facebook http://www.onwindows.com/Articles/Outlook-gets-ev... , more and more users are likely to see the benefits of it as well. It is a very accesible site, although there are the security and safety of data issues.

    Hi5 sucks. And that's a fact.

  • blah

I would disagree. They probably have banner ads there BECAUSE they have a marketing department :)

  • http://www.Spirofrog.de Tom

Only 60 million. Sounds okay to me! Any ideas about the valuation?

  • Nobody

It's been open to 3rd party developers for years. Amazing how quickly we forgot about the bright future that was supposed to be OpenSocial.

@Vadim I work at hi5. Our platform is open to third party game developers, and hi5 is working with third-party game developers to improve both our OpenSocial and Facebook-compatible APIs. If you're interested in developing a game on the hi5 platform and/or porting one of your existing social games using the OpenSocial or Facebook Games APIs, feel free to contact me.

You stupid tool. Go spam someone else.

  • Vadim

Dear Michael, please visit the website of my social game – http://www.in-relations.com. It's still being developed, but we already have amazing results and statistics. We are eager to port it to your network, but I think that it will require significant investment. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail – vadim.rogovskiy@gmail.com. Thanks!

Hi5? As in the great spamovator of way back when? Gotta be kidding. I remember that thing for sending spam "invites" to anyone listed in a user's entire address book, thus for being one of the earliest words in my email spam filter. Crazy to think its still alive, supposedly in use, & getting funding too.
