The reason Spain is more popular on Twitter is because anyone who has time for Twitter usually unemployed. Looking at Spain’s unemployment rate of 19%, it is easy to conclude that they are more popular on Twitter. Also taking the demographics from each country meaning Spain has a greater population and overall a younger average age that are more technology savvy. Therefore your statement is inconclusive!

Hi there!

I’m the author of the original article on the Attensity blog. I just wanted to make a really quick comment re: methodology.

1. I looked at the overall volume of the conversations around both teams, and got share of voice from that. 54% of all these conversations were about Spain.
2. Of ALL the conversations in (1), I looked at just positive, just negative, just mixed and just neutral. Then of all the positive, I calculated the % of the whole that was owned by Spain. So if we had 50k convos total, and 20k were positive – what % of the total positive (20k) were about Spain (47%), and what % were about Netherlands (53%).

So when you see the 53% stat, it’s actually % of all positive conversations, not % of conversations about Netherlands.

The reason I did it this way because it equalizes things, and you are comparing apples to apples.

No offense, but i think you’re interpreting that data incorrectly. The positivity or negativity of overall chatter for one team or the other would come out of the chatter percentage for that team. so you can’t just conclude that the Netherlands have a higher positivity percentage (at least not with the numbers you’ve presented here). sorry dude, but you don’t have your facts straight.
