It was quite insulting personally to be in the very small group who did not eventually get a 1min slot to pitch. Come on Mike Butcher!, you could have spared another 8min of the event. After all, most of the pitching companies weren’t flabbergasting. You should refund the ones you didn’t let pitch too!

No, it’s point 3 of the original post that’s the bone of contention. “Come along and pitch your idea for one minute” – presumably to the room for feedback, which might conceivably have some value to an entrepreneur (whether the VCs like it or not) and justify the steep ticket price. Not “write it down on a bit of paper which will most likely end up in the bin”. This is a materially different event to the one you were originally selling tickets for – extremely shabby behaviour and contemptuous of TC-EU readers.

was pretty much clear to me,everybody who has a ticket-gets one minute to pitch,and a gateway to the land of the funded.

1. Grab a ticket.
2. Work on a one minute “no slides” pitch for your idea/startup/company, and a 3 minute version with slides – but keep it very simple. PDFs are best.
3. Come along to the event and pitch your idea for one minute, no slides.
4. A group of judges selected from the startup and investor community will then select THE ONES THEY WANT TO HEAR MORE FROM.

My apologies if it was not clear that that last point was referring to the 3 minute pitches, but that was the intention.

Looks an awful lot like “pay to pitch” to me. All the attendees will have coughed up 30-40 quid for the privilege of writing their pitch on a piece of paper for consideration, and that’s somehow different to pitching?

You didn’t mention that stage when you first started flogging the tickets, your original post distinctly says, “Come along to the event and pitch your idea for one minute, no slides”. Which is why I assume most entrepreneurs signed up.

Very shoddy indeed. Still, you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines. When Arrington sells up, I doubt the new corporate owners will be quite so pleased at the Techcrunch name being used to sell such second-rate events and services.
