Steve Jobs Responds To The Antenna Issue: Hold It Different Or Use A Case
MG Siegler
Jun 24, 2010

By now you’ve heard about the antenna issues some people are having with the new iPhone 4. Basically, it seems like wireless signal strength degrades if you hold the lower left corner on some, but not all devices.

This has been shown on video and there are many reports out there about this issue — something that is particularly troublesome for left-handed people. I’m sure a lot of people have asked Apple about the issue — I have too.

So far, I have yet to hear anything back other than they’re looking into it. But one man did hear something back about the issue — from Steve Jobs himself.

C.K. Sample emailed Jobs earlier this afternoon about the issue. A few hours later, Jobs responded with the following:

Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

The first part of his statement is likely true, but the thing is, Apple specifically manufactured this version of the iPhone to have an antenna that wraps around the entire body of the device. Most devices, obviously, don’t do this. Apple undoubtedly did this with good intentions — to both improve reception and make the device itself more compact. But is it possible they miscalculated the trade-off?

Jobs’ solution to hold the phone differently is a bit unreasonable. His other solution to buy one of the new cases is, sadly, expensive (each one costs $29). If the problem is as widespread as some are making it seem, perhaps Apple should be giving these bumpers away.

Sample also let me know that Jobs actually just sent the exact same email to him again. This may mean he’s sending this to all the people who emailed him about this issue today.

Despite the busy launch day, Jobs is clearly going through his email. Earlier, he responded to someone about the new FaceTime feature replacing the Hold button on the phone.

Update: Sure enough, the statement Jobs emailed out is the official statement Apple is now using. Also check out the one-liner Jobs sent to another user that Engadget obtained:

Just avoid holding it that way.

Best “that’s what she said” ever?

Walt in his review on WSJ said Apple was aware of it and working on a fix. Interesting to see what comes of it.

  • Mike

Wow…..Thank You Steve for saying screw u hold it a different way or buy my $29 bumper.

  • Brett

That's funny. I'm surprised they didn't look into that issue during testing. I'm left handed and i'm definitely not looking forward to holding my phone differently. I also don't like cases, I think they take away from the look of the phone and i'm careful enough with my phone to not have a need for a case either.

I guess i'll just have to see what happens when I get one in a few weeks.

Interesting answer though…I wonder how jobs goes through all of his emails?

It's not a design flaw. Steve is just trying to bring gentility and good manners to mobile phone usage. The correct way to hold an iPhone 4 is with the thumb and index finger on either side of the phone, while extending the pinky outward as if holding a fine china cup (the pinky will also act as a supplemental antenna). Once the user is holding the phone like a Regency dandy, he will naturally tend to behave like one, showing the world what a well-mannered chap he is. Pure genius.

  • Ian

Maybe if they hadn't lost the silly prototype in Redwood City, they could have engineered a better phone antenna.

  • Cay

what a dick this guy is. I have always heard about reception problems on phones by holding them wrong but have never, ever, EVER actually seen it before. I can hold my Incredible any way I want and the reception remains the same.

  • Mark

I'm sure he doesn't go through them. He has several assistants doing that for him. I heard once that Bill Gates gets something like 55,000 emails a day, and if Jobs is even getting a tenth of that, he doesn't have the time to read each one

  • michaelatx

When Samsung was experiencing horrible engineering and quality issues the Chairman of the company assembled thousands of the workforce and made them watch as a bulldozer crunched a pile of 150,000 of their defective phones.

    Jobs' response is underwhelming.

    I'm so happy I switched to Android/HTC.

I talked/shamed/mocked/cajoled at least ten of my coworkers into buying Iphones over the past two years. While I don't feel guilty about it, I'm not necessarily pleased with myself either. It was a considerable investment for some of them. Sigh.

  • Mike NYC

His mention of the case kind of lends credence to the theory that they were well aware of this issue pre-release and are selling it for this very reason.

His reply also smacks of complete arrogance.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/bobcobb1 bobcobb1

this one might backfire on them a bit. I love mine so far, but this is definite bullshit. Sales numbers wont show it though. How about not charging $29 for a piece of plastic and rubber to go around it?

  • green

One of the guys was making the same funny comment in gizmodo yesterday. Now that uncle Steve has told the same thing don’t ever hold it that way!. A 3rd option is get a Bluetooth. Now, you have a phone that is designed to drop calls!

  • Jessie

oh just use a case already and you’ll be protecting your precious as well as improving reception.

alternatively, if holding it differently isn’t an option. wrap the trim/antenna with electrical tape. this will effectively isolate the antenna from your hand, restricting the flow of electricity that takes place (through your hand) from one antenna to the next when you have your hand touching multiple sides of the phone.

Brilliant. The #iPhone4 "losing bars" bug is not a bug, it's a feature. Steve Jobs wants us to stop using our hands to talk on the phone.

Man, I was still holding out some hope that this was a software issue. They must have launched knowing this because it doesn't seem to be a surprise to Steve. It's even worse because I'm still going to buy one anyway.

I've gotta say, I've followed Apple product launches for many years and there are always reports of issues at first. Somehow Apple corrects any problems – even ones that seem hardware related.. well with the exception of the Mac Cube and the cracked casing.

Did someone mention earlier this might be why the iPhone failed to pick up reception at the Keynote? Was Steve holding the phone left handed?

  • Jeb

I am one of the lucky individuals to be dealing with this problem. I asked for a free case, but instead I am getting a replacement phone and a $600 hold on my credit card. The hold is only temporary, that is unless Apple doesn’t receive the problem phone within 10 days of me receiving the new one. I now must wait for the delivery man a second and third time because they are shipping the return labels separate. I also have a 10 day deadline to keep up with or my credit card gets charged. The labels are arriving after the weekend so that takes 3 days away right from the start. I know that 7 days should be plenty of time to get the phone there, but why am I dealing with this in the first place. Oh, and I can’t use my own labels because I was told they were sending the phone to a “special location” to be analyzed. Depending on how this transaction goes this may be the last Apple product I buy. I never understood why they used a semiconductor as an antenna anyway.

  • http://amimu.blogspot.com amimu

When there's something new, expect people to find flaws with it. And that's the fun part. It wouldn't be an iPhone, if people aren't talking with it. This problem is almost the same with the iPhone 3G and like Steve Jobs said, "Just avoid holding it that way". I mean, c'mon.. most men have received that order from their GFs, one way or another, right. So initiating this over your iPhone should be a piece of cake.

  • James

This is NOT funny. Steve Job's response confirms that Apple F'd up the antenna at the design and QA phase, and they have no intention of "FIXING" the problem. No production phone except for the iPhone 4 goes from full bars down to "no service" just by holding the phone with your bare hands. NONE.

I'm very disappointed at Steve Job's response. I want to upgrade from my 3G, and here is the creative force behind the mobile zeitgeist being a stubborn hypocrite.

  • Joe

Quick, Android dorks – get all over Apple. Better yet, say you own an iPhone so you are credible. I was going to buy a case anyway, as most people do. My iPad has a case too. So the new iPhone will be best phone on the market – in a case. This is news? Are we going to act like phone cases are a big deal? Google fanboys are jerking off over some big anti-Apple news, when most actual people will never even notice this "defect."

And Victor, who the hell are you to say "we" are beta testers? Speak for yourself, moron.

  • Michael

The real thing to consider is the more Apple gains popularity the more their quality will tend to slip. This is because the sheer demand for their product and the little amount of time between announcement and manufacturing and then release just presents so many openings for errors to occur. They are also manufacturing at such a fast pace that there will be problems, and since they are so big now they will definitely be under public scrutiny more and more for even the most tinniest of defects. It's not that there testing is flawed; It's that they are producing at a faster pace than they can ensure everything works properly.

  • KillerViv

even right handers need to hold phone in left hand while they type with their right hand!

Steve – I fan of Apple's products – not you. I get the feeling that you're starting to take your customers for granted. Keep going the direction you're going, and guess what – you'll lose me and a lot of people like me.

  • KillerViv

they are producing and selling more and earning more… why not hire more testers to scale up properly? being big is no excuse to making shitty hardware and asking people to buy case for it and hold it with two fingers!

  • Mikael

    Dear internet-asshole & apple-fanboy
In case you hadn't noticed: there are few – if any – "android dorks" "getting all over apple" in these comments, you are however quite clearly the person who if the roles were reversed and this was an android phone – would be writing a long, incoherent rant of reasons why the iPhone is the second coming.

Basically Apple messed up. Wether you were already going to pay an extra $30 to have your phone work properly (or as properly as it can on AT&T) or not, is not really relevant. And there's really no need to be a complete dick about it you hipster fuck. (since apparently we're exchanging broadly stereotypical insults).

  • TheYear3000

So, how are you 100% certain that email was from Steve Jobs and not just a fake?

  • Austin

No company should be allowed to release a product and when it functions improperly under normal use be allowed to say "just don't do that", or every does it this way anyway. If the iphone is supposed to be in a case, sell it in a case. Everyone who's trying to say this is not a big deal is part of the problem. This time it's apple, but htc, motorola, samsung, whichever manufacturer should take heat if they release product that doesn't work the way it should.

  • Michael

Gotta learn at one point and maybe this is their chance to realize they need to reorganize, but it is really early on into the launch. Three days at max for the earliest people so it will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Steve Jobs obviously does not have a solution at this time and to think they wouldn't be working on one is silly. He is telling those who have mentioned it what he can until the situation is cleared up. Would you much rather not have an answer at all and just make it seem like Apple is ignoring it? At least by replying, no matter how dumb the answer may seem, it is acknowledged that it is a known problem.

  • Michael

I wouldn't call it their undoing, but they will be sharply examined every release they make, and if they continue to not scale properly and not take the time to do all the needed testing than it could hurt them. In the mobile market at least.

  • Phil

I don't follow you. Apple announces a new iPhone every June. The fact there is more demand does not limit their R&D cycle. This was a calculated risk on their part. They knew 9% would have this issue. Having 91% happy is an acceptable risk model.

After all, all lefties are forced to comply with a right world.

I’m sure my hand has covered the antenna lines multiple times and it hasn’t affected my conversations. If I blatantly cover the lines I see that the bars go down a bit, but it doesn’t materially affect the call.

Otherwise, this is by far the most impressive smartphone to date, hands down.

  • evan

so we should wrap the new phones in scotch tape? Spiffy…

  • SharonW

Hm, well by that logic the Motorola Droid X ought to have some significant problem considering they just announced yesterday and are launching in a little over two weeks and the original Droid is only 8 months old while at the same time Motorola has launched some 8 or so other Android devices.

Gee and it's not like anyone EVER looks at Android or MOT for something to criticize.

Although I suppose the real conclusion to draw is in your last sentence. They're not scaling properly, i.e. Apple screwed up royally.

Its more like an old Leica camera that doesn’t take good pictures, or a mini ipad that teases you with the ability to sort of make calls, whatever, Steve Jobs does care about us little people, just remember though, this phone is a work of ART. Don’t try to understand, you can’t possible fathom the beauty of this Iphone4, or the irony of this disaster we all just purchased for $729 . I just had to get the sexy bumper :(

  • Tomas_ScionLife

Actually, the three metal bands around the edge of the iPhone 4 are three separate antennas: Cellular, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

Most current "hidden antenna" cellphones separate the user from the antenna so there is less effect than there is with the exposed antennas on the edge of the iPhone 4 case.

Best signal was on the old phones with extensible antennas.

The funniest part about this is that the solution should be quite straightforward. Coat the brushed steel in a laquer or epoxy that is an isolator. And I expect there is a way to do it while retaining the look as well.

  • Andrea Favale

    Steve, you're a brilliant douche.

  • bob

It looks that nobody told Jobs "Just avoid holding it that way" in their key note.. Now Jobs know this.. so just forward it to all iphone 4 users.

  • robert

What Mr. Jobs was trying to say in his email was that he is thrilled his user unlocked the game changing feature of his new product called the Call Drop Hold. By switching the hand in which you hold your phone, the iphone brilliantly simulate bad reception allowing you to escape calls. So next time when your mom or a ex calls, just pick up using the Hold. The iPhone changes everything. Again.

  • http://intensedebate.com/profiles/raaawb raaawb

    Apple: "Hold Different."

You'll remember that even their tech guy testing out the device said that by the time he had gotten it up to four bars, he was so drunk that he lost the phone.

  • Greg

You fools, you aren't supposed to physically hold the phone. Obviously you are to use the force to hold it up right in front of you.

  • Roman

Steve Jobs WWDC 2011: "As you might have heard, we've developed something magical, something revolutionary. It's called dropCall! When you get annoyed with a phonecall, but don't wanna hang up, just put the iPhone in your left hand and – boom – the call drops! And put it in your right hand and – boom – the signal is there again! Isn't that awesome?!"

Seriously though, when did Apple ever come out wth a new iPhone other than in a one-year circle? don't carriers in the US offer a return policy? Give your iPhone back and get a phone that works!

  • Roman

Or use a case, it's "only" 30$ for a piece of plastic!

  • Gonzalo

  • H.S.

OMG, most of you guys have nothing better to do than critizising a product you don't even have? Are you hating apple so much? Are you so brainwashed that you believe in every blog post on the net bashing at apple (even believing that those steve jobs mail are real)?

Can you please give us the link for that official statement?

  • H.S.

no you are just an apple basher, thats all

  • Airstream

Obviously just the new "Hands Free" feature?

  • http://intensedebate.com/profiles/encodion encodion

well i don't know. i never have problems with the signal strength. even if i cover the whole phone with my hands. and there is a reason why my phone is covered with plastic even if it has an aluminum body.

a metallic body if grounded (more or less, but a big body has the same effect on the low power of wifi signal) dissipate any electric currents generated from the external electromagnetic fields and thus block a large amount of the signal.

by simply using one of many available cases yo block the possibility of the charge dissipation on the phones body to your body and therefore you don't lose significant amount of your signal.

thus "This is a fact of life for every wireless phone" is a complete and utter LIE !!! because you just have to pick up a phone with no exposed metallic parts, or if so, have the metallic skeleton not form a connection / complete or partial shield around the phone's receiver.

FAIL, like putting the speaker next to the HDD.

  • strongfist

This may be a tough one for Apple to fix. Its not like this is some sort of glitch or software issue, its hardware. I mean we all know that Apple has great costumer service but just how far does that extend.

  • iPhony

Jobs has been planning this all along. He can't stand that AT&T makes money off of an Apple product. You folks familiar with Apple's history know exactly what I mean.

So as each version of the iPhone comes out, the phone part gets worse and worse. Eventually, he'll remove the phone portion completely (blaming technology he can't control), and rebrand it as the iPad Nano.

A buddy of mine has the new phone and no matter how you hold it, it works great. I even tried to emulate this "bug", but no luck. Is this just a few phones with defects or a lot of phones with defects because it certainly does not seems to be all phones.

definitely soooo apple. the only positive thing i can think of is at least they are consistent with their attitude of "my way or the highway"…way to go branding team for sticking to what should be your slogan. the follower mentality of people who think that apple is a great company is actually a very disturbing display of human's nature to be followers. i mean isn't this how the holocaust happened.

i refuse to ever buy an apple product for these reasons:
    1. i like options and freedom to make choices on a number of things.
    2. i don't like to be told what to do and how to do it. no dictatorships for me thanks.
    3. i refuse to be a follower for the sake of following with no real legitimate quality to get me hooked.
    4. i prefer relationships with equal give and take, not one sided relationships that are all about the other side (in other words, apple doesn't care an ounce about their customers).

Why doesn’t everyone just shut up and use the universal wonder-fixit solution that we all know and love. Duck Tape. Put a little bit between the two antennas on the lower left side and presto, no more signal loss.

It does work, but holy crap, what a total cluster and shame on Apple for the pitifully lame PR response. I am sure they knew about this, of course skin on antenna is going to disrupt the signal, rubber is a block for conducting electricity. Electricians tape would work too. Save $30 :)

Apple will have a hell of a time getting past this one, and no, there is no firmware fix for this.

The antenna produces radiation so they stick it in the place furthest from the head, ie the bottom of the phone.

  • Not A Sheep

So, let me get this straight:

    1) If you don't hold the phone in some unnatural contorted fashion, you lose your wireless connection and drop the call. 2) The proximity sensors on many of the new phones are faulty, so people are hanging up on callers just by having the phone touch their face, and the speaker phone kicks on unpredictably. 3) The volume up/down buttons are reversed on a lot of the phones

So much for Apple’s “legendary quality”. How long before we can call it “iPhone Vista"? Oh wait, we already are!

  • Surinam

The part that really gets me is all of the brainless sheep who are saying "But dude, you don't understand! It's the new iPhone! So what if there are some problems with it???" Tell ya what: If I spend hundreds of dollars for a phone, and I'm locked into a multiyear contract for it, IT DAMNED WELL BETTER NOT HAVE THESE KINDS OF ISSUES! Can you imagine the outcry from customers if any other company released a product that had this many design flaws and manufacturing defects? The outcry would be unbelievable. And good ol' Smoke and Mirrors Steve, telling us that this is somehow our fault for holding the phone wrong???? You've got to be freakin' kidding me!

Well dang, all of this is explained in the fine print:

DO NOT hold the iPhone near the metal band
DO NOT shake the iPhone too rapidly (as it is, in part, made from alien technology and could signal the mothership to attack)
DO NOT speak to the iPhone unless the iPhone speaks to you first
DO NOT show your back to the iPhone
DO NOT feed the iPhone after midnight (see Gremlins' DO NOT list for more information)
DO NOT joke about the iPhone whether in our out of the iPhone's presence (they could be anywhere)
DO NOT attempt to predict the iPhone's intentions (there's and app for that)
DO NOT walk too fast with the iPhone (unless the iPhone commands you to do so)
DO NOT walk too slow with the iPhone (unless the iPhone commands you to do so)
DO NOT behave in a reckless manner with the iPhone on your person (this pisses the iPhone off)
DO NOT allow Android based devices to come into direct contact with the iPhone. If this becomes the case proceed to the nearest Apple store, drop to your knees in the presence of an 'expert' and confess your sins. Your iPhone will be exorcised and returned to you after uhhh 're-programming'.

    ….and most importantly

DO NOT act like you are bothered by the iPhone's obvious design flaw (Steve Jobs said you just were not holding it right? Right?)

The iPhone is a product in which people have already accepted is not complete and fit for purpose until you download applications to at least match the out-of-the-box offerings from Motorola, HTC, Nokia, Samsung, Blackberry etc.

One of the iPhone 4's biggest features presented at WWDC was its 720p video recording which now brings it in line with at least 18 month old devices. Apple was also more than happy to inform the world that to actually do the "magical" editing on display, you would have to purchase the application for $5. Again, a feature that has been free on mobile handsets for years has to be purchased for the iPhone, but everyone (including the blogs that consistently fail to highlight that no one rips off consumers quite like Apple) just accepted this news as if it was a valid decision and worth the cost.

Being forced to purchase a case to use the device is thus purely in keeping with Apple's belief that you are purchasing the most expensive blank slate on the market today. After purchase you decide what you would like to do with your purchase and simply download and/or purchase whatever is necessary in order fulfil your needs.

from what i know about radiation NO the Phone does not have the power to produce the radiation and besides most harmful rad is not in the tele spectrum

you see the human body is a big circuit (with the blood carrying iron) so almost every transmitting electronic device that humans come into contact suffers from the attenuation.

all said and done i think this is an Foxcon problem they people are Over +++ worked and QC is a Mess over there heads gonna roll.

  • rivertripper

When the Wii was released 2007 it became apparent they had a very serious design flaw; embedding a Wii remote in the other player's skull. So what did Nintendo do about this naked plastic missile flying around America's living rooms? They started packaging a padded silicon sleeve with each new remote and the offered all early Wii users up to 4 silicon sleeves for the remotes they had already purchased.
Now that Apple has a design flaw with their new iPhone antenna, they should act as an adult and give away free bumpers to their iPhone customers. Acting responsibly brought nothing but goodwill for Nintendo and it would do the same for Apple. Steve you can fix this problem if you are smart; don't let this continue to fester.

I'm a current Android user, but was an iPhone user in the past. I've never kept my phone in a case, and never plan to.

Plain and simple, this defect (no quotes required) is the dealbreaker; I will be purchasing another Android, and not switching back to iPhone until at least next generation. Nothing to do with "jerking off over some big anti-Apple news," just another consumer making up his mind.

  • Roi

Let's see, $29 for a case times how many million phones = how many mega bucks for apple. Give me a break. This is robbery. If the phone doesn't work properly without the case then the case should be included, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • John

OK next Steve Jobs is going to tell us he is not supporting making voice calls anymore on the iPhone. Their is just too many problems with it. But if you really need to make calls you can spend another $30 and buy a case to help reception. You know what? Maybe I just won't buy a iPhone.

  • Meep.

Except… now you have a crappy product with arrogance. Don't see how they're justified here. The one thing Apple has done right is get out good products, but how can you possibly defend the iPhone 4? It's a bunch of "magical" features in a smart phone that no longer works as a phone. Not only does AT&T suck, but Apple decided to help them along by adding the metal band that FURTHER decreases your ability to make calls. "Just in case you finally got service, let's roll the dice one more time!" I was already skeptical about the 4; it's just a bunch of toys and gimmicks on a phone that looks better. Everything else, including where the phone was originally lacking, remained the same. My friend just went and bought a 3GS over the 4, and I think it was a great decision.

  • http://www.facebook.com/neal.mcfee Neal McFee

This is clearly just another Apple (and overall PC industry) kick in the shins for left handed people. Even the keyboard designs show disdain for the left-handed. The right side of the keyboard gets such important keys as "delete" and "enter." The left side of the keyboard, however, is giving the lowly gruel of "tab" and, alas, "caps lock"….left handers unite !

  • Meep.

You know, I really REALLY hate Apple, but I'd have to disagree. That was their original motto, but they have changed as of late. While their products have remained the same over the years (we're on iPod v.12), they all "just worked." I'm not even going to start about their business model. This is probably the first time in years that they rushed a product to market and paid for it… mostly because there's no way to rush a product to market when it's the same product as the year before.

    User error? Design flaw? Neither.

So many people are totally unaware of a thing called "manufacturing error".
(Apple does not manufacture *ANY* iPhone. Never has. Never will.)

The simple reason why 1000s of phones have this problem… and 100000s do NOT:

The company that builds the phone (not Apple) let a small number of phones slip through quality-control inspections.

*ALL* iPhone4s should have an insulating coating on the antenna…. but a small percent of them were accidentally shipped without it.

Here's an instant 3/8" solution for a few cents at your local store:

So… why not switch to an HTC with Sense UI on verizon? The incredible is a great phone (from what I've seen) and the UI makes it much more visually appealing (which is what you are going for.. no?). The only thing I would worry about by switching is the battery life, however with a Task Killer app you can keep your battery going for days at a time, depending on usage obviously.

If I didn't have to wait until next June to get my upgrade I would probably go with the incredible, although I love having a physical keyboard….

  • http://www.pixelriffic.com Pixelriffic

Not sure which is more stunning here. The fact that Steve thinks you're doing it wrong, or that they want to sell you a thirty dollar rubber band as the solution. Apple accessories are so overpriced in general, and this "case" is absurd. I do think the new phone is a pretty amazing piece of engineering, but the ironic thing is that Apple wants you to cover up the metal sides which exemplify the new design.
