Google Now Activating 100,000 Android Devices A Day — 50,000 Android Apps

Today at Google I/O Vic Gundotra made a big revelation. Last year, Google was activating 30,000 Android phones a day. The past February, that number jumped to 60,000. Today, Google is now activating over 100,000 Android phones a day.

Android was the second best-selling smartphone this quarter, Gundotra says. They are only behind RIM — and yes, ahead of that other rival. Gundotra also pointed out the stat from AdMob that Android was first in terms of web and app usage among smartphones.

And that’s not all. Gundotra also announced that there were now over 50,000 apps available for the platform. And there are some 180,000 developers working on the platform.

There are now over 60 compatible Android devices from 21 OEMs in 48 countries. The devices are spread across 59 carriers.

This is great news for an open platform, beyond simply chest-thumping support for HTML5.

that's the definition of scaling a business. Android will be the 600lb gorilla without question. Apple's walled garden approach could cause some longer term pain if they don't open up.
I can tell you that in Latin America many operators are now testing Android as well. That is 600M people……

This is great, Apple's policies are driving me crazy… I will swtich as soon as some games start to get released on Android

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's still very early for the Incredible, and the EVO is not shipping yet. So the bulk of these are Moto Droids? Maybe we could run another round of "N1 Fails", based on Flurry's first 30 days numbers.

iPhone is a closed phone system – Android totally open – my devise I should be able to do what I want with it. Android here I come. Apple Good luck being flushed….

    > Second in the U.S — Symbian rules the world.

LOL! Symbian are nowhere. RIM is first, then Android, then Apple. Symbian and Microsoft are on the way out.

"Android was the second best-selling smartphone"

I never understand this comparison. Is there a single phone called the "Android" that is selling more than the iPhone? Are are there 10 different Android phones whose sales are being compared to the one iPhone?

And the faint screeching you hear is the panic being voiced from Cupertino as the cult of iPhone begins to unravel. The "cool" factor has gotten you this far, Mr. Jobs…now what?

  • carlos

Haha so true … what a shame for poor old stevie just when it looked like he'd got it right, Google does with Android to phones what Microsoft did with Windows to PCs. Apple will be marginalised again.

    OS X market share: 6.15%

Future of iPhone OS market share: 6.15%

    Apple customer: retarded with money

    iPhone=Empire
Android=The Rebel Alliance aka "the Rebel Scum" according to the Empire aka Apple.
    *fixed*

  • Mark A

Errr… no. Symbian have nearly 40% of the market. If Android are going to count worldwide sales then they need to recognise the worldwide leaders.

In the US it's a different story of course.

    It's happening now.

  • Kees

Well the best guess is that they comparing the OS on which a phone is running. Because of the Apple policy it will run only on a apple iPhone. Android can run on multiply devices.

  • Paul

Any word on the total Android OS Install Base? The last estimate I've seen (1-2 million) is a year old.
