Apple Holding Special Event To Preview iPhone OS 4 This Thursday

Apple has just sent out invites to press inviting them to a special event on Thursday April 8 where they’ll “Get a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS”.

The event, which obviously comes just after the launch of the iPad, will showcase the new features coming with the latest release of the iPhone/iPad operating system, giving developers time to plan for and integrate the new features into their apps. There have been rumors for months that this new update will include the ability for certain third party apps to run in the background.

Apple has been holding these developer preview events since before the App Store launched: there was one in March 2008 where the iPhone SDK was announced, and last March Apple gave a preview of the iPhone 3.0 software update. Historically (by which I mean, the last two years) these updates have been released alongside new iPhones in the summer (the iPhone 3G came out July 11 2008; the 3GS was released June 19 2009).

Are you guys even invited? Aren’t you blacklisted by Apple for your lame coverage of the iPad announcement?

what about the release of iPhone HD?

  • http://golovlev.name golovlev

Is this pic is an apple’s invite? Looks like shit.

  • Dan

If they do come out with an iPhone HD there are going to be a bunch developers feeling pretty stupid about adding “HD” to their iPad app names. Although really they should feel stupid about it regardless, though not as much so as the devs who went with “XL”.

  • http://cianscorner.wordpress.com Cian

Well one thing is for sure I will not be watching it live here on techcrunch. Ye were an absolute disgrace on the release of the iPad.

Apple, update the MacBook Pro already!

Apple does not play. I love them for their constant ability to master the art of timing. Then deliver. I love my iPod Touch (though I think I lost it) and though I don’t agree with Apple’s policies with developers and the closed nature of their OS licenses, I have to admit, Apple has remained “special” in all this time. I am a Windows die-hard but could not imagine a world without Apple and knowing that Mr. Steve Jobs is the godfather to us all in this field. So yes, iPhone OS 4, sign me up!

  • Gregg

Dan no one is going to feel stupid about adding HD to their app names. The apps were for the iPad and the iPad resolution is 1024×768. 768 being more than 720P it is HD. Not 1080P HD but 720 is considered HD.

  • b-man

I can see it now. Every app in the App Store will start with an ‘i’ and end with ‘HD’

Hey, how can we assume it is for iPhone OS 4.0?? It could be basically the integration of Quarttro Wireless’s advertisement system into the iPhone SDK itself — as has been rumored. I think even this would be pretty big news — since it will be easier for app developers to just call an API for a block on the screen to become an advertisement and earn money — this would be phenomenal actually — and would drive creation of even more apps (look at 250k to hit soon).

Foolishly I missed the shadow of the “4″! Less night sleep.. :-) But I guess even that would probably include the integeration of the Quattro Wireless system into the API.

iPhone OS 4 hopefully brings multi tasking, if so I’ll definitely pick up an iPad on UK release

  • Fred

I currenlty use Verizon Wireless. I would love to switch to AT&T so I can get the iPhone, but the service in this area (SW Ohio) is not very good.
As anyone heard any more about the iPhone being offered to Verizon customers? If so how soon can I order my iPhone.

  • http://www.johnfernandez.com John Fernandez

That looks a lot like the Facebook logo to me…

I doubt they’d announce iPhone HD any time before the summer.

If they did, I’d laugh at them for being so dumb. That isn’t likely going to happen.

  • Diablo

    No. 1280×720 is 720p.

  • Ken

Ditto, Hopefully Apple can shed light, on what will be the real score for the iPhone, if it’ll be introduce to a new carrier or not? Opinions for the Verizon iPhone

  • http://www.bhuio.com Ben Holyfield

I heard once that the next iPhone will have twice the resolution. That would be:
    960x640pixels. Can anyone confirm that?
The advantage would be that old Apps wouldn’t need to be redesigned. I have 20 Apps out on the store and it would be horrible if I have to redesign all of them ( http://www.bhuio.com )

I’m glad they announced it when it was only going to be 3 days out. This means there will be less anticipation (for me, at least) to see what’s coming….as it will hint at the next version of the iPhone.

Ultimately, iPhone OS 4.0 is going to make/break my commitment to the platform for another 2 years. OS 4.0 better be a big leap otherwise I’m jumping ship to Windows Mobile 7…which, IMO, seems beyond iPhone OS 3.0 in many ways (but does lack in some, yes).

  • http://twitter.com/mmoeed Moeed Mohammad

Can we please stop calling it iPhone HD? It will never be called that.

  • Tim F.

And you still miss the overt “iPhone OS.” Maybe MORE night sleep is in order.

But ad platform announcements as well as OS features wouldn’t be out of the question. The previous event’s high point was in-app transactions (or adhoc networking).

  • http://www.msigeek.com/ Vijay

I seriosly doubt if Apple would comeup with a big release of any product as such. It looks more a showcase of the development platform and what are the new APIs they are opening up for the developers.

I would just hope..The 4th Generataion of Iphone (OS)., should indeed give an end user to change the layout of the homescreen. give the user a flexibility to choose what he wants to have on the phone.! Running native apps on the device.etc…!

  • mtl_zack

Maybe they will make use of the facebook connect that will be implemented into iTunes. Maybe your address book can get info about your facebook friends.

Maybe there will be some twitter integration too. Apple is getting increasingly social. They added Twitter and Facebook updates to iTunes and now they’re gaining a bigger web presence. People will also be linking to the (potential) web based iTunes store and App store.

Maybe Apple is now going to take advantage of the social web. The logo for the event looks very similar to the facebook logo too :P
