The Davos (Or Is It Arrington?) Curse – People I Interviewed Are Getting Fired
Michael Arrington
Mar 15, 2010

The list of people I interviewed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland earlier this year is starting to look like more like a hit list than a VIP list. Two of them have been relieved of their current positions – MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta and now Ning CEO Gina Bianchini. If I were Jeremy Allaire, Max Levchin, Sheryl Sandberg or Evan Williams, I’d watch my back. They may be coming for you next.

I wonder how happy they really are with Ning’s progress.

You’re implying that Banchini got fired. If she did, provide the evidence – this is clearly not what is being said in the press release. Otherwise it might be a good idea to change the title.

  • Michael Arrington

correct. I’m clearly implying Bianchini got fired.

um Mike probaly you dont want to say “fired” unless they where realy fired.

“fired” normaly implies that the fired person has done something naughy.

I heard Bianchini chose to leave.

oops that follow up comment by MA happend before I hit post.

  • Michael Arrington

Gina is hyper competitive and a winner. Starting pitchers never take themselves out of the game.

She was totally fired. She couldn’t make it work. The network idea crashed around them and she was given an Enterprise chance to revive. #Fail=Fired.

Thank god I didn’t go to Davos this year.
Jeez MA. I hope it is just a swiss thing!

Probably should shout out to Owen here. Out of the 5 mentioned he is probably the most fortunate to get the ol’ golden lifeboat ticket.

  • jimjerky

You are dead right Michael! No founder would leave like this unless they get fired OR they know an exit is not in the cards anytime soon.

She still has too much to prove. My hunch is that the EIR spot was a form of “severance”.

So Budding entrepreneurs do n’t get interviewed by Mike If you got then be prepared to lose your jobs :)

Otherwise you may be subjected to the curse of being interviewed by BlogKing! (As it is below his stature to interview anyone :) )

Fired or Chose to leave ? I’d say Both.

If the business doesn’t go well, if the future of the company is not exciting anymore, then the founder will want to start something else, and the board will want to fire the founder.

Thanks for the clarification. If I were Sheryl Sandberg, I wouldn’t worry too much tho. Sheryl joined FB in 2008, it has only been 3 years.

These people have little business in Davos. They should be more focused on the business, instead of their own publicity.

This reminds me about Carly Fiorina, the ex-CEO of HP. She had similar fate.

Mike, did anyone interview you at Davos?

  • boden

    Well that didn’t work…

  • Michael Arrington
  • James

I doubt Sheryl needs to watch her back… please.

well, that’s the real world, some stay some go , some should stay positive ! stay positive because you will help us stay positive.

Never knew what she did over there. Our friends over there said it was not a surprise.

@James I have the same doubt. Sheryl is truly a role model for female leader

don’t forget Randi Zuckerberg. you never know with those brother/sister combos.

Pound for pound dollar for dollar ning is a powerful servIce. Hopefully they’ll expand UI options and better classify The social sites that exist on the ning network.

Shouldn’t Marc Benioff be on the list as well?

  • http://www.johnfernandez.com John Fernandez

Maybe once startup CEOs are spending their time at places like Davos, they’ve become too much of a celebrity to effectively focus energy on running such a company?

    Just a thought…

  • Marc

Is it any surprise. How long do you founder on the rocks before you throw lack of leadership overboard. The sad thing is, they probably left it too late.

  • sean

I do hope that someday Mr. Arrington will interview, Carol Bartz of Yahoo..

That would be really exciting to watch (grinn!)

  • http://www.popupbooster.com Scott Donovan

People go to such events in order to find new jobs.
Being at these events doesn’t generate leads or bring new customers.

  • FB employee

Sheryl, the role model for a female leader? Are you smoking crack? She’s well-known to be a narcissistic political person who surrounds herself with “yes-men” (she usually hires folks from the military, because they are used to command and control).

  • Arel Mikeington

    Mike, you’re not a pitcher, you’re a catcher!
