Did Apple Just Ban Sexual Content From The App Store?
Jason Kincaid
Feb 18, 2010

Apple may have just made a major change to the App Store that could render many developers’ applications worthless. We’ve just heard from Jon Atherton, the developer behind Wobble iBoobs, who says that he just received an Email from Apple indicating that his application was being removed from the App Store because of a new policy change: Apple has apparently decided “to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store.” Here’s the letter Atherton says he received:

The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.

We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.

Sincerely,
iPhone App Review

From what I can tell, this isn’t an isolated incident. I’ve tried to download apps called “Exotic Positions” and “Sexy Women”, and both of them gave me errors indicating that the applications were no longer available. However, some applications with similar themes (“Beautiful Boobs”, “Sexy Girls Uncovered”, and “Sex Strip”) worked. All of these applications came with Apple’s “objectionable material” warning that requires you to affirm that you’re over the age of 17. This may be a case of Apple picking and choosing which apps are too sexual, or they may still be figuring out which apps to pull (or the changes may not have propagated to all of Apple’s servers). There are reports on Twitter of other developers having their applications pulled as well.

Of course, many of these “sexy” applications have been on the App Store for many months. Wobble, which lets you add “jiggle points” to any photo (use your imagination) hasn’t released a change in functionality for 6-8 months, and has been installed 970,000 times — none of these were flying under Apple’s radar.

We’ve reached out to Apple for more information.

Update: Apple has given us this response. See this post for more.

“Whenever we receive customer complaints about objectionable content we review them. If we find apps that contain inappropriate material we remove them from the App Store and request the developer to make any necessary changes to their apps in order to be distributed by Apple.”

Personally, I think the best part of the article was… ‘I’ve tried to download apps called “Exotic Positions” and “Sexy Women”,’.

    Tell me more.

Honestly though, I’m not surprised, they want to stop the Hard Porn aps before the iPad arrives, because I’m sure they have seen the impact the Porn Industry can have on the iPad. Afterall, weren’t there a bunch of comments a while ago, when it was said how ‘Perfect’ it’d be for Porn? Yeah.
Apple doesn’t want that in their CV. And they’ll do anything to stop that.

The stupid thing is that there is no actual content in this app.

This is a VERY big deal, I think the Store will be half empty tomorrow! It will take a while to remove them all, but if Apple is serious, their 150,000 apps will be half gone soon – there must be 500 different variations on the “Asian Boobs” “Asian Legs” “Asian Hotties” theme!

We have (had) an app called “Shake the Booty” that was actually fairly tame especially in comparison to most of the other apps that got pulled and we just received the same email.

Yeah, I just received the same email for my Featured Pinups application.

The sad part is that this application didn’t really had anything obscene, it was just a simple application to showcase the featured pictures of the day of PinupLifestyle.com who hired me to build the application.

    Meh.

mmm maybe it’s because apple doesn’t want to have tacky sexist apps. there is a difference between the average porn app and “wobble iboobs” where you get jiggle points.

From the quoted email, it sounds like Apple is responding to customer complaints. Why can’t Apple just tell them, “If you don’t want to see that kind of stuff, DON’T BUY THESE APPS!” Its not like they arn’t properly labeled or anything, and Apple even took the step to restrict sales to minors.

Heres an idea: Apple could take these applications out of the catalogue that you can browse through iTunes, and only let people access them through their direct URL. That way Apple would have no part in the promotion of the content, and it would be quite hard to find/innocently stumble upon (unless you are looking for it specifically, by going to the producer’s own website).

…or they could just do away with the wall around the garden but that is so un-Apple.

It isn’t a big deal that they removed this particular content. It is a big deal that they are removing an entire category of content. Whats next, Safari will block any website that Apple deems sexual? I can’t receive any SMS or email on my iPhone if Apple has scanned it and deemed it sexual?

In my opinion Apple has switched sides in their famous 1984 commercial a long time ago. They keep doing crap like this because people keep buying their products. Until customers react they have no reason to stop.

Just the other day I ‘reported a concern’ from iTunes regarding an app for sex jokes. I have no issues with the content, but if the app is marked as 17 +, is should not have, in its screenshots, explicit content such as the f word or suggestive references about 9-year olds.
I noticed THAT app is still there though, with no changes to the description. Here’s the link:

This is good news… the app store shouldn’t include this crap.

I’m stunned to see that so many TechCrunch readers seem to support this sort of censorship. For Apple to pull an entire genre of apps because they may (or may not) be sexual in nature? That’s just wrong. I agree with “anonymous” who points out that if the App Store pulls all sexual content, then it’s hypocritical for iTMS to retain its current library of music.

It’s simple, folks: If you don’t like the app, don’t buy it.

  • kent

The worse part is Wobble iBoobs is not even close to being porn, just a fun clever app. There are many useless apps with just pictures of women but iBoobs actually did something it wasn’t a quick bucks app.

  • http://leifandersen.net Leif Andersen

Well, I agree tha it is a good idea to get the hard porn out of the app store. However, it still does bother me that Apple has complete control over what can be put on their platforms. And I’m amazed that people continue to pump all of this effort into a platform, that Apple can just refuse to let you sell on by a whim.

  • http://www.chillifresh.com Jon Atherton

“shouldn’t” and who are you to judge Ryan? Maybe tell us what else we can’t do mate, I’m interested…

Hey everyone, we now have to live by Ryans standards.

There are almost a million people who own the Wobble app, who now cannot get an update if Apple releases a new O/S that breaks the app they OWN. This happened with the update to 3.0. We released a patch, now we wont be able to do that.

If Apple approved it already and people bought it, why are they changing their standards?

BTW – Wobble actually has no content – it ships without any, users use their own pics.

  • Shailesh Banta

Apple controlling so much is a bad thing. I agree it’s almost as if they’ve switched sides on that 1984 commercial.

With so much of competition going about, this is not a wise thing.

Isn’t it so great, what Apple is doing for developers with App Store? You can work on an App, after paying thousands for the developer kit and maybe get exposure to millions, maybe get your app revoked.

I’m so glad Google’s moving to an App Store model, too. I want a device manufacturer to tell me what content I can have on my device. They’d never abuse that power, certainly!

  • Just Some Dude

Seems the easy solution is to add an adult section to the store. Then the folks who don’t want to see the boobs don’t have to and those who do can. But we’re not talking about porn apps. I’ve never seen an app in the app store that was any worse than Maxim magazine. Poor quality maybe, but hardly porn.

Should they sell Penthouse or Hustler in the Apple Stores now?

If they started restricting what websites Safari can browse then that’ll be a big deal. Keeping porn out of their App Store is akin to keeping skin mags out of their brick and mortars.

  • Phletch

Apple doesn’t want to be linked in any way to the sex industry. You’ve heard of what a sex crime on your record can do to someone’s life, and I think it is smart of them to at least appear to distance themselves from something unseemly like boobies in the app store when there is going to be some pretty sick shit slipping through the cracks (if you know what I mean).

People where throwing hundreds of these applications up there a day that simple had a selection of images, these apps absolutely nothing of substance to the App Store and drowns out the real applications. I think there is a middle ground though. Maybe a category for crap like this that doesn’t ever appear anywhere else in the app store, in a dark corner. Just like in the non-virtual world

  • acidboy

  • cak

Settle down, he is allowed to offer his opinion.

A better solution would be for apple to offer a porn group, which is hidden unless you allow it, and if you submit your “dodgy” app outside of this group, it will be banned.

Simple, but I guess that is not the sort of image Apple wants to go for.

  • http://www.nibrasbawa.net Nibras Bawa

  • http://betterness.net Kawika Holbrook

As you imply, pornography is freely available with a Web browser. Little need for it, or its slightly sanitized alternatives, in the App Store.

  • MikeR

I just had 4 of my apps removed tonight as well – got the same form letter email, word for word, about “overtly sexual content”…

My apps featured bikini girls in a humorous way. There was absolutely nothing “overtly sexual” about it, other than the girls happened to be wearing bikinis – just regular bikinis, no thongs or anything like that. And the humor used was basically on a very PG rated level. No dirty jokes or sexual innuendo. They were silly, goofy, funny apps that were intended to entertain… and people seemed to like them.

Of course I think it’s ridiculous that Apple pulled them, but it’s not a huge deal to me. If the new policy is to no longer allow bikini/pin-up girl type apps, then fine, I can live with that.

However, but does disturb me is, that so far, Apple seems to be cherry-picking which bikini-girl apps to go, and which are allowed to stay. For example, the Playboy app is still live and in the AppStore as of this writing. So is the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit app – in fact, the SI app is even featured on the main App Store page!

So I’m confused… do the Playboy and SI Swimsuit apps not contain “overtly sexual content”? Please explain…

What’s interesting is the way App Store makes decision about rejecting or revoking application. I’ve created (not-so-creative) bikini girls puzzle, and – no nudity – it was rejected. Jobs and Apple feel like big man on campus when it comes to mobile devices. They can’t REALLY compete strongly on laptops and personal computers so they make up for their emasculation in that realm by being overly oppressive and abusive in the mobile sphere. We worry about government intrusion and a surveillance state but people don’t see how Apple’s strong arming in the mobile industry (see Flash, apps, touch screen industry, etc.) is actually very much closer to controlling people through technology.

Just imagine how people here would react if it was Microsoft telling people they can’t have some programs on their computers because it violated their arbitrary whims and rules–and put software on all Windows machines to enforce those rules. People would throw a fit. Instead we get apologists who say it’s no big deal when in fact it is.

Why not just create a “Porn category” on the app store and require some kind of age verification to access it?

How is this different from the hundreds of fart apps, or the flashlight apps, or the workout planning apps, or the note taking apps, or the website RSS feed apps, I could go on.
The point is, the app store has thousands of apps that by any other standard would be considered either crap or completely redundant. In fact, I personally find the fart apps much more offensive than the “asian girls viewer” apps – the latter simply addresses our basic nature, while the former implies low mental capacity, which I happen to find insulting. So maybe apple should ban those.

Maybe Apple are changing their standards to comply with rules in other countries that they have just opened up their App store to? Maybe we’ll only be able to show a woman if she is wearing a veil??

I’m not for porn mixed with other apps and I believe a hidden +17 category would have been a better choice but there is something very wrong here :

I’m an app developper, I make a good app(if it sells + 1 000 000, whatever you have to say, it fills a need) and make big bucks on it say : 1 000 $ / day

Great, I can quit my job, I can incorporate my very own company, hire some designers, developpers, makes my app better.

Then Bam : “We changed our policy today, no more money for you, end of discussion, oh please don’t cry, you are making a fool of yourself !!”

Think it’s just porn so you don’t care … Wait until the first court trial about medical apps…The “We, Apple, have decided to revolutionnized the way notes can be taken on a device, so you”re app is now redundant, oh don’t start to cry….”

I find the process too violent, leaving no time to find works around, and just completely disrespectful to people who have given times to make your platform thrives.

  • Gody

Thanks to Apple stores for banding the sexual content. I hope that you will band all sexual issues and not just the overtly ones since I just checked my Apple Store and still find many.
It is really bothering when we search the Apple store and find such disgusting sexual applications all over around.
Banding all the sexual applications will encourage us as costumers to buy more iphones for our young children who are eagerly begging to have one. But such ugly applications deprive them from having it.

So hopefully soon you will band all the sexual applications and we will congratulate you soon for selling more iphones.

Thanks and your concern is appreciated.

I’ve been thinking about this some more, and this arbitrary control over apps, and moving the goal posts at their own whim really is wrong.

As another commenter noted, what if a developer has made major life changing decisions based on the App Store landscape last week?

This is one of the major reasons I became an Android user when the G1 was released. The iPhone is a beautiful piece of design and engineering, (except for the battery issue) but I just can’t stand the iCulture that surrounds it.

I think it’s time to get one of Mr Turning’s ideas out of the cupboard.

  • Bart

Who in their right mind would wright an application to support any of Apple’s platforms? They clearly don’t care about their customers, their partners, enterprises, the business community at large, the environment, human rights…

and they most certainly despise developers.

All they care about is maintaining the mystique that surrounds their product line so that suckers pay into their “abnoxious profit margins” (to quote an Apple exec from the book ‘Startup’).

  • Bart

It’s not the smut…it’s the constant changes they make to their policies…

peoples’ businesses revolve around these platforms, so if the platforms shift due to dictatorial policies, it makes no sense for developers to support the platforms.

Glad I didn’t jump down that hole.

This is why the US has the single most complicated legal system in the world! To hell with freedom when there could be a big fat lawsuit involved. :) Big corporations are just a bunch of sissies who bend over backwards when someone spouts legal concerns.

Mark my words… very soon you won’t be able to enter your own home without someone from Homeland Security swabbing your ass!

  • Concerned iPod Touch User

This move by Apple is nothing more than another two-faced move based on back room corporate dealing. They are systematically killing off every ‘babe’ application except big corporate brands like Playboy and Victoria’s Secret under the guise of censorship brought on by prude users’ complaints. That is a load of BS… They are colluding with big corporations. And it all smacks of anti-competitive behavior. The FTC should look into this “policy”.

  • Rob

I think this is a good idea. I’ve seen this stuff in the App Store and wondered what Apple was thinking including it. People can always put porn on their iPhone if they want to and anyone can find porn using Safari. For the totally determined, there will most likely be hacks created to get around Apple’s policies. This is a very good call on Apple’s part. Apple will do better with core customers long term if they keep this type of stuff out of the App Store. They certainly don’t need the money and are under no pressure to create incremental revenue from adult stuff or porn-lite.

It’s not about money… it’s about control. And the first and foremost “control” needs to be placed in the hands of the parent. Always has and always will. Parents are getting too damn lazy (and/or greedy for legal earnings) and want this responsibility passed onto the merchants.

What Apple should do is enable a filtering system for their AppStore (with parental controls) instead of a simple popup that anyone can ignore.

Any parent that says “I don’t want my child to have access to this stuff”… well… then DON’T let them have access to it. Just because you don’t want your own child to have access to it doesn’t mean it should be unavailable to everyone else. Regardless of whether or not one believes it is acceptable does not and should not dictate that same belief for anyone else. If that’s what these parents want then they should get the hell out of this country and move somewhere they can hide their children from the world and dictate the way they are raised without any outside influence.

Others claim that it’s just an AppStore and they can get this stuff elsewhere. Yes well this is just one small step that combines with many others. The more we let people get away with deciding what is available to us and what isn’t, the worse it will get. Those people need to grow up and take some responsibility of their own and stop bitching about boobs on the iPhone!

  • Brian

You bought the wrong phone for your needs!
You should have known better, so stop whining.

The iPhone is an end to end controlled user experience designed by Apple to deliver what they consider to be an optional balance between security and convenience. This is similar to other controlled consumer products like xBox.

Now, surely a smart know-it-all like you must have understand this simple fact when you made your purchase or was that analysis too complex for you?

There are lots of other, wild west, mobile phone products out their that would seem to meet your product choice criteria better. So why didn’t you buy one of them? BUT NO! You buy the wrong product for your needs and then hang around tech blogs whining about your own lack of good judgement.

do you use netflix? if so then they are censoring, there is no porn.
you own the dvd/bluray, how dare they!

it’s the same argument. apple has no obligation to support or offer porn, hard or soft, simply because you want it or you don’t like censorship or that iphone is yours, you bought it.

you can always open a browser and peruse all you want.

  • Brian

Which is a perfectly fine argument… in ONE direction. Think of it this way, a company has the right to offer or not offer whatever they please. But if what they offer (or make available) conflicts with the ideals of the conservative… they change their business practices. We see this all the time and think nothing of it. But what about the other way around? Why is it NOT acceptable to ignore those concerns? If someone doesn’t like a company for what they offer… then simply don’t deal with that company.

The point is that the company has every right to make these changes, but they also have a right to remain the same! So this whole ordeal has nothing to do with what Apple can and cannot do by law. This goes far beyond Apple’s “obligations”. They opened up the AppStore for developers to use as a new marketplace… but now a lot of them are left out in the cold because some lazy parents out there can’t control their own children or have trust issues.

We got Apple’s notification about having removed one of our applications (an E-Book-App) because of “overtly sexual content” yesterday. The app is called “Boys & Toys – The beauty of speed”, and the problem is: It is about cars, fast cars, specifically. No sex. I mean, no sex at all. Does Apple even look at the apps they remove from sale…?

One more reason to jailbreak imho

  • Greytfriend

There are 2 solutions that occur to me.

    1) I don’t really want to see those apps either. I especially don’t want to see them in the what’s hot or top 25 lists because for me they’re taking the place of an app that I might actually buy, so I’m not getting the info I want. A simple solution would be to enable moderate or safe search options. That way I, and my kid when we’re looking together, wouldn’t see the apps but people who want them will.

    2) Apple could allow other stores to sell apps that download to the phone (ha!). Web apps are not the same. Apple would still have the vast majority of sales from people who appreciate the security of their review process, but people who are willing to take a risk would have that option. And maybe it would stop the jailbreakers. At this point, Apple’s strict control over content is past the point of usefulness to them, it makes them look like nasty dictators and gives little benefit. If the change was managed properly they’d gain more than they’d lose.

When they introduce the Mac they had this girl breaking a screen and going against the establishment, now Apple is behaving exactly what they ridiculed!!

I have apps that contain beautiful pictures of girls, some show MUCH LESS than PLAYBOY, but Apple left Playboy, and Maxim, and others on iTunes because it is all about the mighty $$$$$$.

What Apple has done again is show no respect for the Developers, with out notice they pull the apps, and when you get a call back it is some rude individual like Richard XYZ that “can not comment, can not explain, and he has to hang up because he does not want to talk to you”

The Explicit category is still not available in the new app options. This could be a solution, but the problem is Apple policies and the way they carrying them out. Yes I know there are other platforms, but none like Apple, and because they are Apple does not mean that they should not be considerate with the people who helped them make this product a HUGE HIT. I am extremely happy with Apple’s decision. They should deny sexually offensive iPhone applications. I know a lot of people feel that the images on these applications are funny but if you really pay attention to the message it conveys, it is far from funny. I agree that it is definitely our responsibility, to not buy products that we believe are offensive. However, companies are equally responsible for their products and the message it may or may not send to the public. Some of the applications that I have seen were sexist, degrading, and some of the content borders on sexual assault. Why would any company want to support or sell anything like that? So yes these iPhone applications have gotten out of hand, and I am glad that apple is denying them.

  • Rockstarr

I must say how appalled I am to hear of Apple inposing it's own censorship but allowing "major publisher" applications to remain. Then to be fair & just remove ALL applications that are not produced from "major publishers and not only based on content. The precious apple store number of available applications would be probably about 10% of what it is currently. If you are going to censorship, then censorship both large and small application developers; your discrimination choices are not fair and whom do you think made this iTunes store so popular? Wasn't the 10% "major publishers" so better judgement on whom to omit & whom to allow is necessary before the "everyday Joe application developer" does decide open is better and go with Android.

  • Blehky

"However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately. "

It should read instead as "accordingly", since the term "appropriately" is subject to much debate as to whether their (over) reaction to complaints was appropriate -at all-. Case of the minority setting the bounds of decency for the majority. I guess Apple thinks they are the new Disney.

I agree that sexually explicit stuff should be banned from apps…and I think it should go even further to other websites, especially ones that children use, such as youtube. Also, even though the apps come with Apple’s “objectionable material” warning that requires you to affirm that you’re over the age of 17, there are still children that can lie about their age. Thus, this does not help and all sexual content should be obliterated.
