Facebook's Project Titan: A Full Featured Webmail Product
Michael Arrington
Feb 5, 2010

Facebook is completely rewriting their messaging product and is preparing to launch a fully featured webmail product in its place, according to a source with knowledge of the product. Internally it’s known as Project Titan. Or, unofficially and perhaps over-enthusiastically, the Gmail killer.

Facebook messaging has been the bane of users’ existence for years. My first public gripe was in 2008, when I said that urgent changes were needed. The biggest problem is simply deleting old emails. It takes so long that I have thousands of unread and read but not deleted messages in my inbox.

But Facebook messaging is also only indirectly linked to the email, which is still the standard way that people exchange digital messages when not on Facebook.

Facebook has occasionally dabbled with improvements to messaging, like adding the ability to search messages. But for the most part it has remained static. And not very useful.

Even MySpace moved away from their aging messaging platform to a true webmail service in 2008 (albeit one that lacked POP or IMAP support).

But now Facebook is getting itself back in the game. And if the details we’ve heard are accurate, Project Titan, or whatever it’s called when it launches, may be the kind of product people flock to.

First, our understanding is that there will be full POP/IMAP support, meaning users can access the account other than through Facebook itself. Your email account name will be your vanity url – vanityurl@facebook.com.

Email is all about identity. And Facebook is ahead of everyone else in the identity game via Facebook Connect. Facebook says more than 60 million people log in to 80,000 third party websites each month via Facebook Connect.

Tacking a real webmail product on top of those vanity URLs and Facebook connect is something even Google may shudder at. Gmail killer? I don’t think so. But a strong product move nonetheless.

IMAP support sounds good. I will add it immediately to my Gmail :-)

But I doubt that Facebook can be serious threat to Gmail. They are not showing so much guts to be open source as Gmail is. But as we all know, every strong open source project needs strong competition by some closed system. Like Apple / Microsoft or iPhone / Android.

It will be interesting battle to watch so I’m bringing my popcorns.

I think this is big. People, especially the younger generation, have moved away from email (unpersonal, spammed) to IM in soc nets (personal, no spam). Facebook is trying to get app spam out of their platform by allowing app developers to send their messages via email –> more spam in your inbox, less spam in your facebook. E-Mail plus social graph is the killer app. Personal, relevant, rich, networked.

It’s about time. I haven’t used personal email for years for communicating with my friends.

Email will be a thing of the past. Digital communications is migrating onto social networks where there is context for the communication. Either big networks like Facebook and LinkedIn or small niche networks as well.

I hope LinkedIn does the same. They’ve made massive improvements in their functionality with groups (which killed Yahoo! Groups), their apps, their ability to store Contact information, etc.

I would be very happy if all my personal communication was in Facebook and all my professional communication was on LinkedIn.

If E-mail Id is same as the Vanity URL wouldn’t E-Mail Id become too very public..? Spamming could become a major problem here coz every one will know “who is who”, which could lead to v well targeted spamming.

  • Tim

I was thinking the same thing. There’s a bigger problem here than Facebook has to solve before it’s email system will take off.

Email has the advantage that you can guarantee each email is completely private and only known to the sender and each recipient. It seems obvious, but the reason people have so much faith in this transparency is because the email system knows nothing else about you.

The perception with Facebook is not the same – and perception is much more important than reality. Users are unlikely to use Facebook mail for business use, formal use and shopping online if they fear that somehow the recipient is able to discern more about them from their Facebook identity.

I don’t think that is a legitimate fear, after all if contacts are not friends then they cannot see your details – however it is a fear that will lurk in everyone FB user’s mind. Do I want to send a mail to my landlord / future employer from the same “place” that I socalise at?

  • http://mohanarun.com Mohan Arun L (@marun2 on Twitter)

Not. Emails are still very much alive and kicking, and will continue to exist in some form though they may have evolved and become known like a ‘message queue’ or a ‘buffered message’ system. There is simply no substitute for a form of communication that does not demand real-time attention, that you can attend to sequentially as time permits. Read PBS article ‘email is far from dead’ here – http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2010/02/email-is-far-from-dead033.html. That said, facebook launching email to go along with your social presence is a cool idea. Facebook is seen pioneering the merging of email inbox and social media messaging dashboards conceptually.

  • http://www.qxdesigns.net Jeff

    You make a good point.

However, you’re naive in thinking that email is private. When you send an email message to someone: a) it is not encrypted, b) it passes through multiple servers where a copy of the message is stored on each server that it passes, and c) the sender/recipient isn’t verified.

If you use secure mail, then yes it’s private, but most people do not, and they use the standard mail protocols which are not private by any means.

Facebook OS? I don’t think we’ll be seeing it, even after a year or two. They can’t even manage their own privacy issues.

One thing that I would like to happen on FB though, is for them to have a simple “delete all” capability on the inbox. And perhaps, make their website secure from Koobface virus, that keeps on popping and popping at facebook every other month.

Stand by for Spam! With that email address construction, it will be trivial for the local viagra – dead wealthy relative – big boob creator to spam those boxes. I can here the spammers gearing up now. Google “@facebook.com” and “http:facebool.com”. Strip the vanity and plug it into our “offering”. Hope facebook has a good anti-spam solution. Thay are going to have a lot of it! Luckily for us, since facebook is close playpen, we don’t have to worry about it spilling out via pop2 or imap to our other mailboxes. I see Google Wave as a possible substitute in that it offers both real time and standby. But you are right, email is nowhere close to being dead. Businesses still use it heavily and we’re prob not switching to social network mail any time soon.

Facebook has been in existence for almost 6 years now and I’ve been on it since the first year but the more the company grows the more I hate it. The number of users may be growing constantly but these constant design changes are not really working in their benefit. It’s hard to find people who like the new designs but eventually we get used to it. Recently facebook made it so that it’s impossible to have the privacy control I used to but that’s beside the point. Facebook getting involved with anything email related will be an epic failure. Simple features like message filtering should exist for facebook but instead I let gmail filter my facebook “spam” for me. I’ll be curious to see how long it takes for facebook to make such a drastic change that I eventually stop using it all together.

  • Sid

LOL. You’re delusional if you think that LinkedIn of all things killed Yahoo Groups. That’s completely ridiculous.

I’d also have to say you clearly don’t value your privacy. Even Gmail is a lot more private than Facebook or LinkedIn. Why would I want Amazon or Best Buy want to know ANYTHING about my friends or family just because I buy something from their online store?

  • MaximusNYC

I frankly don’t want anyone sending me email in Facebook. Or MySpace. I have an email address already. 1 inbox is enough to keep track of.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jared_Tracy/704807817 Jared Tracy

How about they get their regular mail feature to actually function? I haven’t been able to send a message for more than 12 hours. Lame…

  • gus

i actually like the facebook messaging feature, maybe because its not email. gmail is filled with marketing spam and its cumbersome and now over-featured. FB messaging is a simple way of sending longer form messages to friends and benefits from being a closed system. it could do with some tweaks, but opening it up as full webmail would be a mistake i think.

  • Eric

They better have some great spam filters if the email is automatically going to be the vanity URL.

  • http://www.LoveTheCool.net Michelle

I could this hurting Gmail. Facebook has become hugely useful to my business, and I’m constantly jumping between it and gmail.

If I could forward my Gmail email to Facebook and never have to open Gmail at all, it would be only a matter of time before I’m simply giving out my Facebook email, since that’s where I live.

I didn’t think Facebook could dull the shine of Twitter, either, but it has. Visiting Twitter is like visiting your old college dorm, and you wonder how you ever lived like that.

FB offers so much more – w/ pages+lists, it’s the most powerful RSS feed I’ve used.

And I love the new design.

    Facebook is killing it.

  • http://benwerd.com/ Ben Werdmuller

I don’t think either, but it’s interesting to see them inch towards more infrastructure-like offerings. I just wrote a blog post casting dubious light on Gartner’s social web vs email predictions, and now here’s Facebook using embrace and extend tactics on email itself.

This is the mark of a serious software company, not a website. They want to be synonymous with the social web. With 400 million users, they’re well on their way for the consumer – and you can bet the enterprise will follow.

  • http://benwerd.com/ Ben Werdmuller

I think it’s the first step down a very interesting road – not so much the killer app as a signpost to the killer app.

It’s a shame it has to be so proprietary.

Michael, are you hiding something from us? Don’t pretend you don’t know that the creator from GMAIL, Paul Buchneit, will be the leading engineer of the FBMAIL, like the way I’m pretending that I know you (disclosure: I don’t know you). This means a lot to me. FBMAIL can be expected to be designed as GMAILV2. Technically, it should be a real improvement over GMAIL, a fantastic hit. Now just this week, Paul Buchneit, posted on his blog (which I follow, because, well, I like to follow bright and achieved people), a statement on how he wonders if the control that China exerts on the chinese is mandatory to rule them, as if, perhaps, there were no other option left on how to rule them. It leaves me wondering if he’s not thinking that the chinese way is THE way to control planet FB? I’m sorry but his recent thinking just gives me the jitters… I will never, ever, use FBMAIL.

The average session time of the 200+ million users that logon daily is 55 minutes… why not have them spend even longer by managing the bulk of their email on FB too!! (Read: so Facebook can serve more ads! LOL). Makes sense. Good move. HUGE room for improvement though… the product needs to be totally killer to come close to Gmail. :)

Does this mean that now I’ll get an e-mail (in my alternative account) telling me that I’ve got an e-mail waiting for me in facebook?

  • Melanie Higgins

Yes, I conceded to Facebook Chat and ditched the old AIM, as it faded into obsolescence – it’s now almost archaic among the online community. But I refuse, REFUSE to replace Gmail with Facebook. I will let hell freeze over before that happens. I’m considering deactivating it anyways.

  • Andy

This seems unnecessary to me. I use Facebook to send messages occasionally, but it’s often for quick more impersonal messages. I have a Gmail account for the rest of my email needs, and, quite frankly, have not once wished that Facebook would expand their email capabilities. I like that I have some control over who can email me on Facebook and am not interested in having to worry about being spammed every time I log on. I think this instance of innovation may be too much. By doing more, Facebook could be taking away from what they do well with regard to messaging.

We’ve suggested to Facebook in the past that they roll out an email client as they have an opportunity to redefine the product. Additionally, Paul Bucheit, the lead developer of Gmail, is now an employee of Facebook which means he may have another opportunity to redefine email once again. The secret email project was not under development until recently, as we had spoken with a number of Facebook employees at least a couple years back who suggested there was nothing in the works (although they could have simply been unaware or trying to hide it). As Mark Zuckerberg announced at last night’s birthday celebration, Facebook has a number of products that are in the midst of being rolled out. [...]

Well, by making Facebook messaging a webmail service, they’re actually doing the opposite; unlike today’s messaging system, email is completely open. And since it supports POP and IMAP, you don’t even need to touch the website beyond signing up. (Assuming, of course, that part is true.)

Now of course it’s harder to switch services once you’ve started, but that’s a problem with any webmail service because your email address is tied to the service.

One benefit of communicating via Facebook has always been that you never need to look up an address to message someone. Using real names coupled with profile pictures that populate in the address field appeals to people who don’t want to maintain a digital address book.
Using a profile picture is more desirable, for instance, than checking if the John Smith you want to message is john.smith.123@gmail.com or smith.john.1@gmail.com.
And while Google is trying to add this functionality via Google Profiles, I think Facebook’s head start and existing “friending” infrastructure gives it an edge.

I think maybe what Patrik means is ‘irrelevant’ when he said obsolete. Certainly, the critical mass is there and will continue into the foreseeable future…

But why are people joining FB at that furious clip? And what are they hoping to get out of the experience? I’d argue that most are simply wanting to join in the conversation and those conversations aren’t all that relevant to the larger day-to-day of their lives.

Let’s give it some time but right now I see the biggest diff between Gmail/Google and FB is lifestyle vs. hobby. G is platform for my lifestyle whereas I punch into the FB wall when I want to chat in a box.

[...] According to Mike Arrington, Facebook is preparing to roll out its own email client, code named “Titan”. We’ve suggested to Facebook in the past that they roll out an email client as they have an opportunity to redefine the product. Additionally, Paul Bucheit, the lead developer of Gmail, is now an employee of Facebook which means he may have another opportunity to redefine the email experience. [...]

No seriously… diversification is protection against ignorance. It also results in mediocrity.

Facebook’s 3 in 1 core is about connecting friends (like Friendster), viewing photos (like Flickr) and posting status updates (like Twitter / Friendfeed). That’s about it.

We’ll stick to our Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or Gmail thank you.

Facebook is not about ones identity. This guy is on the hemp. It’s is about using people’s personal content and all their demographic information and pimp it all out. Otherwise they would allow nicknames and page personalization. It’s a bland mass mentality is what it is about.

The technology is great and they should sell it, license it. They should charge a subscription and stop pimping the membership. FB forgets without members Facebook does not exist.
