Facebook seems to be rolling out its new site design to at least some people outside the company, although none of us at TechCrunch have yet to be graced with its presence. The new design is “exactly” like the screenshots that GigaOm posted on December 27, says one source.
Applications are taking the biggest hit, as Facebook announced in October. The search bar has been moved from the right to left-center and the navigation bar is simplified. Notably Facebook has removed the double link to your profile. Settings and login/logout have been combined into a single “account” drop down.
There isn’t a whole lot to hate here, but Facebook users have a fine tradition of trashing any changes to the site, and this will likely not be an exception.
Any of you on the new version yet? Let us know, and send in those screenshots.

I don’t yet have it – but i want it soo badly. It looks so nice and clean and simple.
I just hate the backlash thats going to happen after it takes effect. (I still think Facebook users that can’t deal with minor changes should just go back to MySpace).
if you want nice and clean and simple, use http://lite.facebook.com/
But the news feed on fb lite’s homepage is usually not updated, at least in my case.
+1 lite is awesome
Trashing the site in general would actually be a good thing at this point to muddy and distract from the privacy change issues that exist.
I got this design…..
Umm that’s pretty much what my facebook has looked like for months now. The only difference being the blue bar at the top is rearranged and the bookmarks will be on the side rather than down the bottom.
:/
You seem to have missed the point here.
Agreed, this has been going on for about 6 months. I hope they launch it soon, I think it will help Fan Pages
You missed the main point of the redesign: the application bar is gone. Only bookmarked applications will be listed on the left sidebar. Notifications are completely gone too – instead there will be a counter next to the application link to new activity.
this is all in line with the announcements in october as far as i can tell. http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/28/live-storming-the-beaches-of-facebooks-developer-roadmap-event/
wondering…when i can see this
Nothing here, not exactly a drastic change but looks good.
I love the new design, i’m kind of sad there is no opt-in to the design yet. I’m sure they’ll slowly allow users to convert to the new design and until then i’m pumped.
I’m hopefully expecting a slightly better performing page when the design rolls out. There is too much clutter on the current page and that really streamlines it.
Of course the best example of streamlined is the lite.facebook.com (mentioned above, thanks Michael Arrington).
what’s the three icons on top left??
I have it too since the 31st… I dont know why but maybe it’s because i’m suscribe to the developer part.
i love the new redesign. much simpler and more usability.
but i have a problem. been using the new design since a month ago. but over the weekend my homepage reverted back to the old one.
anyone knows what happened? anyway i can get the new redesign back? pleeaaseee?!!?
I was going to post the same thing — I originally got the new design on Nov. 25th (and was baffled when none of my friends reported the same). Over the weekend, mine reverted back to the old version as well.
For once, I was really impressed with all the changes they’d made, and I’m seriously missing them! The navigation menu was so clean and easy to use.
Over a month back, I got an option to try the control panel for Facebook Ads. The above screenshot has a similar layout…
Also me thinks tht they have revisited their old design and gone back to showing apps in the left hand sidebar as opposed to the “forever loading” sticky footer bar.
i kinda like the sticky footer bar – how will fbook chat work without something that doesnt have to re-load each time?
Facebook moved three things around in their layout and this is called a redesign? For a site that changes things at least once a week?
Same words. What a buzzing with excitement about nothing…
The only thing that bothers me is that there’s no way to log out with only one click. Other than that, I’ve got no reaction, positive or negative.
I have it. It’s okay in the main, the only annoyance being you have to go back to the home page every time you want to switch between applications.
who wants to be the first to create the group/event/fan page of how they hate the new design.
I personally dont, but you know theres gonna be like 50 of these floating around, which Ill get invited to all of them, all with their stupid frat boy images and religion posts in the group page.
Then after a month of bitching and trying to be h4xor to get the old look back people will forget what the old one looked like and theyll forget about all the groups and fan pages they joined and well all move on.
Happens everytime.
Facebook is currently just a mess. And with the newest redesign not much will change. Still two different ways of showing the stream – what the hell – even the notations Live and News Feed are absurd. There is not even the possibility to set up a standard stream.
I got the new design the day before yesterday and thought everyone had.
But I like it – it’s cleaner and better organized, but a few things have moved their positions, so I’m sure there will be people complaining.
Seems to be a bug for me, in that sometimes when I click on a drop-down menu, it will take me to some page that I had visited within Facebook a while back. Seems an odd bug…
Thought you guys showed this a few weeks back?

can anyone with the new design tell us if fan page canvas’s have also been reduced yet from 760px wide to the propose 520px? They say its coming in the roadmap and will mean every single fan page canvas will need redesigning – just wandering if this has been rolled out yet with the new design?
I have it. It look very nice. It’s similar to Facebook Lite, and it’s faster. I like the new facebook design.
Facebook change site more than gypsies!!
I’ve had the new layout for a couple of weeks…
…except that the rollout to my account must have been bodged as it switches randomly between the old and new layouts on what seems to be a page-by-page basis
I’ve had the new version for a few days now and I freakin LOVE it!
The searchbar now shows friends of friends as well.. something else I like. Easier to find people that way.
I don’t like it. It looks too cluttered
I’ve been on the new design for a few weeks now.
It has certain elements that work quite well but I still experience a few bugs with the design.
1. The notifications icon in the top left hand corner seems to be buggy where sometimes it will open up as designed and others it will just take you to a random notification (i.e someones status update or a comment).
2. It seems to sometimes experience difficulties switching and remembering your preference for news feed vs live feed.
3. At the bottom of the home page it seems to sometimes load up a box asking if I want to tag friends despite not having clicked on anything.
The other thing I don’t like is that the notifications pop up that used to appear over near the facebook chat section of the bottom bar is now left aligned and loads in the middle of nowhere on a widescreen monitor.
Apart from those issues and my own little qualm I prefer it over the old “new” page. I sometimes get switched back to the old page so it definitely is still getting tested.
All I can say is ugg, not another redesign.
Although not much changes.
i caught my friend trying to search for his ex-gf because instead of search, he posted it in the status field then hit enter without knowing it
Hey Mike,
I’ve had the new design since New Year’s Eve. The three icons represent requests, messages and notifications. Clicking on them brings up a preview of the message, notification, etc.
It’s a little weird not automatically going down to the right-hand corner of the screen to pull up my latest activity.
I think more fundamentally, Facebook is encouraging us to search more. That search box is really prominent. I’m not entirely sure why… probably more Twitter envy.
Do they still notify you somehow if you have replied to someone’s status and that person makes a reply? Or if someone comments on your photo in an album?
Those are really the only type of notifications that I’ll miss, and I haven’t seen anything about how that sort of thing will be addressed.
Always like to see the new designs.. Just wish the mobile apps would keep up, especially the BlackBerry version.
