Nexus One, The Google Phone, Captured In The Wild (Pictures)
MG Siegler
Dec 12, 2009

49239592Apparently, Googlers aren’t supposed to be tweeting the details of the Google Phone, but they have no problem tweeting about how awesome it is. And they also apparently have no problem showing it off. And not surprisingly, pictures of the device are starting to hit the web. Without further ado, this is it.

Cory O’Brien, a San Francisco-based blogger, got his hands on one tonight and tweeted out that picture. He also notes that, “Google Phone = iPhone + a little extra screen and a scroll wheel. Great touch screen, and Android.

As you can see, the Google Phone, which is apparently being called the “Nexus One” (for more on that, see here), does look exactly like the HTC Passion, which everyone was including in their posts earlier. You’ll also notice that there’s a key difference: It’s not HTC-branded at all.

Update: And here are some others that Engadget and others dug up:

  • MJ

I cant see the Google branding.

  • Rose

HTC doesn’t brand any of their phones, by the way.

That same phone is HTC branded see here http://technogasms.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/htc-passion.jpg

So it has to mean something that these aren’t HTC branded right?

  • http://nofilmschool.com Ryan

Selling a branded, unlocked phone that requires a standard carrier contract is a bit less disruptive than, say, selling a phone that is:

    A) free

    or

    B) offers free, ad-supported service.

“More likely is the possibility of a Google Plan as a free, lower-bandwidth alternative to plans from Verizon and AT&T. People worry far too much about the price of the device itself, as if the difference between plunking down $100 and $200 at the store means anything when you’re contractually signing away $2,400 on the spot (a two year contract at $100/month). Based on that knowledge, carriers subsidize the price of a device as long as you sign their hefty contract; seen this way, many phones today are already “free.” Therefore, it’s not the the device that matters. It’s the service. And it’s going to be free.

The money Google brings in from mobile advertising (they just purchased mobile ad provider AdMob for $750 million) will more than cover any data charges they will subsidize a carrier (this was probably why they bid $4.6 billion on that 700mHz spectrum). You won’t have a monthly bill. You’ll just have a free device that does everything.”

    Guess I was wrong:

The trackball is a big disappointment as BlackBerry and HTC have now moved on. BlackBerry found the trackball to be very unreliable and prone to getting jammed up.

The newer optical track-pad on the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is great.

I know it’s not a major but also means this hardware is certainly not leading edge.

  • Marty

is it just me or do scroll wheels seem a bit outdated. i wonder what its purpose will be – seeing as this beauty is touch screen…

  • Marty

p.s. i think i’ll wait for the htc bravo… unless this phone also supports 780p video capturing.

2010 is going to be an exciting year. Google Phone, Apple Tablet, and Google OS. If the Google Phone is sold unlocked I’ll look into switching from the iPhone.

I must say the phone looks sweet and the Android OS is only going to get better.

People this is Android Developer Phone Two.. that is twice that TC got this wrong..the real story missed by TC is the inclusion of Flan..ie 2.1..

If you had asked some ‘connected’ Android Applications developers you would have got the the real story somewhat faster..

Come on TC I challenge you to write about the real story here..come on do some Journalistic work here..if you guys are not lazy..

We both know it has no quadband Moto US 3G chip so we both know its an ADP device not GPHONE..the GPHONE would have the Moto quadband 3G GSM chip in it for obvious reasons as than it could be sold to all US GSM carriers as it would have all US GSM frequencies..

See TC you even missed the Moto quadband 3G GSM chip angle..

Remember folks Adp devices are not branded by the hardware device partner..

The other journalistic work would have been to call that Chicagoland hardware distributor that Google uses to distribute ADP devices..something indicates to me than they would have confirmed that is a an ADP2 device.

Come on TC you are getting as lazy as a Scoble..

How can anyone say that looks nicer than the iPhone? It’s GREY! It’s got a weird little button thingy! It lacks an Apple logo!

Having very functional design has worked for Google on search, because people want search to be function. A phone needs to be much more beautiful than that if it’s going to be aimed at the consumer market, and therefore be an iPhone killer.

This will not “wipe out” everyone. If Google was selling this phone on a carrier for 99.99 then there would be a problem. It sounds like if they sell the phone it will be unlocked. More people will still buy the carrier phones. The My Touch and Cliq are 99.99 with contract. People with Verizon and Sprint will still need to buy their specific handsets. Plus company’s like HTC, Motorola, Sony and Samsung still have their custom interfaces that push people towards those handsets. Android is still the platform of the future. and from the looks of it it will “wipe out” Windows Mobile.

Isn’t Google going to alienate its Android partners by making its own hardware? What is the rationale for making the actual phone as opposed to a software platform?

MS, rightfully does not barge into its partners’ territory with PCs, servers, and phones, concentrating on software. I just don’t see how Google can be successful in this business if they treat their partners like this.

Perhaps, you did not read the novel
If you KILL android, then you get money enough to buy a live sheep. But the bounty hunter discovers that robots are not so different from humans. “Do Android dream about …” is a very deep novel, the movie significantly simplified the Dick’s story. first Android was born mostly from the coffers of google (see Open Handset Alliance). Then HTC took a huge risk to develop a phone for said experimental OS. Then T-Mobile took a huge risk with said phone. Now all three are going to reap the benefits of their risk…i don’t see evil in that, just regular ol’ business risk and reward.

This is the Nexus One (Google Phone) am I correct? And if the rumor is true their will be no HTC Sense on the Nexus One. The reason for that is the the HTC Bravo is the HTC-branded version of the Google Phone. Earlier in the weekend Engadget suggested the Google Phone/ Passion and the HTC Bravo are exactly the same except for the branding. This would imply that the HTC Bravo would support HTC Sense because it wouldn’t be a “with Google” device.

    http://googlemo…e.blogspot.com/
If you click on the link it will take you to the Official Google Mobile Blog. If you look at the top of the page you will see an unknown Android device, an iPhone and a Blackberry. Now back to the Android device. Just look at it, doesn’t it seem remarkably similar to a leaked image from the HTC Roadmap Brochure for 2010. Thats right, the top half of an HTC Bravo.

One has to assume that this is just an Android OS ‘Dogfood’ test only. Because the reality is this – If, as the photos appear to show, it’s just a google branded HTC handset running Android. Then my personal opinion is that this phone will fade into obscurity just like every other ‘iPhone Killer’.

The only ‘Touch screen Consumers’ that will ever purchase a second rate iPhone clone, that has no exceptional originality or design break-throughs, are those that either can’t afford the real thing, or those that are avidly ‘Anti-Apple’. Even if it’s running the worlds most perfect UI & no matter what the Handset/Plan costs are going to be.

The basic and fundamental fact of the matter (and one which almost every designer in the world would agree about) is that ‘Sex Sells’, and lets all face facts – The iPhone is one sexy looking Hand set, with an even sexier UI (You’ll agree, Sales figures will no doubt back me up on that one).

If google think they’re going to ‘Change the Telecom world’ with just another grey ‘techno-burp’ plastic lump, then they may be in for a bit of a sharp, and costly, increase to their learning curve.

BTW before you all consider me an Apple pusher, I’ve never owned and iPhone, I’m actually a long standing Nokia user.

Look, I’m as keen as the next man to feel, try & buy the latest technology, but I’m also very cautious about buying the next big ‘Lemon’ (Zune/Vista anybody?). One can only Hope, what we see above is a cover-up or early trial for something truly amazing, or it’s ‘Back to the drawing board’ for the ‘iTryPhone’ followers.

No 3G! – Bring it on!!!!
It is exactly what millions of us are waiting for!

I really want an iPod Tough with a cheap vanilla phone.
    - Basic voice phone everywhere
    - PDA functionality everywhere
    - Cloud & Network syncing access at hotspots
That is all many of us need and it is at the sweet spot price point.
PLEASE GOOGLE MAKE APPLE GIVE ME THIS!

    ———————

We all know that the future of personal computing is in the hand held device.

It will allow, one and all, the ability to drill down at will into a bottomless pit of information and social cross connect geometries. PERSONALLY CUSTOMIZED to our own needs!

The key stumbling block is cramming all these, endlessly complex possibilities, into such small devices. Being able to effectively drill down into these deep wells of summary-with-fidelity in ways that are simple enough to effectively entice mass participation, will be a tough nut to crack. The key will be top notch interface simplification for the rest of us! In this race Apple has a very large head start on Google. This will require very strong integration of software and hardware which is another point in Apples favor. In the short run Google has the advantage of controlling large stores of content directly and through its eyeball search gateways. Google also has excellent database and adequate graphic presentation skills. But in the long run the combination of data & search eyeball gateways will ultimately fall to commoditization more quickly than the combination of very complex software-hardware-interface integration that will be required to put all this functionality into very small hand held computing devices, in a way that will be transparent to average users. This is not Googles core competency. Nor is it one that is easily developed. As witnessed by the fact that after all these years only Apple seem to be good at it, despite the fact that they have made no secret of their formula.

Google is doing a great job of exploring the power of mass data mash-up, combined with an advertising revenue model supported via their near monopoly in the eyeball search gateway. Their experimentation is showing the way for others, especially other content giants, as they all scramble to define new captive-eyeball gateway audiences that can be locked down via new hardware, software and content combinations.

Apple is watching and learning! They are building out their large data centre. They are working on new web-standards-based cloud apps. They are working up new content direct-to-consumer access devices. These device and their background patents can support new geometries between the content, delivery and advertising stakeholders, none of which will continue to be passively held ransom by Googles man in the middle strategy for monopoly control over the content delivery ad revenue industry.

Yes – Apple should fear Google!

But Google better be looking over it shoulder at Apple. Google is the new Microsoft. It has a lot of good stuff sloppily interfaced. Even Microsoft has definitely improved in this area as of late. As Google works hard to distill which pieces of it new cloud/content access model offer the best potential value equation to users, Apple will be watching, learning and waiting for the opportune moment to step in and cleaning up the interface drill down landscape so as to deliver this same formula on an ease of use silver platter.

    ————————–

Googles other long term problem is its basically flawed cloud network model.

This embryonic cloud based noosphere we all call the internet is just a single instance of a general class of processes that have been called COMPLEX LIVING SYSTEMS. After millions of years of statistical trial an error nature has blazed the trail to demonstrate the recurring themes that appear to be mandatory for successful homeostasis in such systems. With out going into a long song and dance about these recurring mandatory attributes, I will simple beg that you temporarily humor me by accepting the following as one of these mandatory attributes. COMPLEX LIVING SYSTEMS utilize distributed redundancy of function as their key defense against the inevitable errors that arise out of massive complexity. Every LIVING CELL carries the complete DNA methods blueprint plus historical fall back DNA. Every INDIVIDUAL ORGANISM in a species carries the complete repertoire of environmental interactive attributes and abilities(methods). Even at the simpler atomic level every atom contain, internal to itself, all the methods required to behave and recombine repeatably as a member of its class should. None of the above individual members of a class must check back with the mother ship to access its behavioral methods. They are all locally redundant.

Back to Googles flawed Cloud Network Model.
Sooner or lated the evolution of network computing models will return to this time tested strategic necessity. This means in the context of cloud computing that each user node must keep all its methods and data structures locally self contained so as to support independent, organic, recombinant, evolutionary possibilities separate from those enforced by a central mother ship repository of acceptable methods. The user nodes can self operate when not connected. The user nodes can move their complete methods & data set realities to another mother ship server at will. The user nodes can reassemble a mother ship’s data and methods central repository as an ultimate backup to catastrophe. This in no way precludes the user nodes from choosing to update and synchronize their methods and/or local data sets with the central cloud mother ship either automatically or manually. Local autonomy of methods and data sets also offer the choice to keep local versioning of methods and data sets as a fall back autonomy insurance strategy. I could go on but I am sure you tire! I know I do.

Anyway – here is where both Apple and Microsoft have a long term serious advantage over Google. They have deep and wide OS tools that can support this necessity to maintain a strategy of distributed autonomous methods and data sets. A strategy nature historically seems to indicate is the proven path to creating STABLE COMPLEX LIVING SYSTEMS. No non-compliant systems get out alive.

    Oh – One last thing!
I am not particularly a Microsoft fan but we should not count them out. With new more visionary leadership they could be a serious contender. They have a large talented team and a very valuable store of intellectual capital. A serious three way race would be the Holy Trinity of competitive innovation.

    1) Handsets is about hardware: Samsung controls the components market
    2) Handsets is about Software:
Nokia has Symbian and goes Linux for smartphones.
Samsung has it’s own OS / platform
    3) Handsets is about reaching the consumer at the retail stores. That’s not only logistics.
    4) Handsets is about repairs and returns of faulty devices.

At least will be clear now also for the innocent that to push Android is a suicide:
    1) for developers: services will increasingly be integrated into Android and provided by Google that having control of the operating system will destroy all his competitors (and you too….)
    2) for the hardware vendors: it comes into direct competition .. and very very strong (becouse of a business model based on ads..)
    3) for the telcos: which already are competing with services like Google Voice

I hope that the analysis of Techcrunch could become more critical, because at the moment it seems that you are paid by the marketing dept of Google or … that your analysts are not understanding the substance of things

The phone looks alright as far as style and sleek look HOWEVER, I see no point in Google releasing their own phone so SOON after the G1 and Droid. I am a G1 owner and I will not buy a new Google phone unless they’re offering some NEW INNOVATIVE features that don’t currently exist. I better be able to turn my TV, CAR, and Lights on in my house all while texting! Or something Similar :p .. but seriously, it needs to be much more advanced than G1 and current Android phones, and the touch keyboard needs to be similar to the Iphones with SUGGESTED AUTO correction typing that DOES work. I have both a G! and Iphone which I switch back and fourth from. This nwew release will determine if I stay with Google or make a full switch to iphone

    780p, do you mean 720p?
Do you know how much data would have to be stored for each second of High Def video? I do, I work with video alot. Thats an unrealistic request. Plus the fact that the lens would not capture quality video to begin with.
If the HTC phone captures HD video I’d like to see it, but I dought its any good. If i’m wrong that would be awesome to see something come this far though. DSLR cameras are doing HD video now, but it still has a ways to go before its very useful.

I dont know about the Iphone, But I just recently bought a Macbook Pro on craigs list after owning/building custom PC’s from when I was in High School. I love the OS and don’t think I will ever go back. Mac simply work. My PC’s always gave me headaches doing Video/Audio production. My Macbook pro runs solid, and even windows runs better on it did on a PC. Proboly because Apple makes good Drivers. I used to hate Macs, now I love them, dont hate on them if you dont give them a chance ;)
And yes I have Windows on it to play games… Macs do suck in that regard, but hey I just load Windows and its all good.

One the phone isnt ugly. It’s simple and seamlessly designed. 4 main Android buttons and a track ball it will be out in more than one color so no worries about that. And with a name like Microsoft why would you think you hvae any room to talk shit on anything from Google. thanks google for this nexus one, and also the thanks goes to HTC, I haave been playing with this toy for the last five days and yes from my side it is an Iphone killer, I have been using the iphone for the past 3 years and then swish to the ugly N97 which is a nightmare and finally when I was that close to go back to the iphone 3gs the nexus came out and I paid the 600$ for a machine that worth a gold, it works with each and every blutooth device I have, Uconnect in my jeep, Blue and me in my fiat bravo, contacts sync was an ease, lighting speed devise, easy to navigate software, and music wooooow, amazon mp3 is awosome, and finally I DON’T TO HAVE TO BE TIED UP TO ITUNE AND THAT IS A HUGE PLUS. Thumbs up to google, htc, nexus one…

Got my nexus last week, nice phone but HTC could have done a lot better, they r the top dogs in innovation, not sure why Google did not ask for something, more unique ( money ) perhaps. Android is the best OS right now by companies for some reason don’t get creative, they use same icons same menus, same set up …..what is up with that? Nexus Widgets suck big time, power button sticks out that sometimes it turns on by barely touching it, photo album has limited options phone quality has a lot of static when second call comes in, I mean really….. these phones r not cheap come on give us something for our money, sorry to say that in my opinion the HTC hero (Europe) is a more complete. Phone beautiful Widgets, social apps, wallpaper options, apps options, so on… wish it would have been this size. Overall the nexus one is an average phone with an updated Android OS let’s see what the Ericsson X12 brings out

    Very good cell phone

  • Chris

It is a great phone, but I have to admit that, despite my great enthusiasm for this slice of Google yumminess, the company leaves a lot to be desired in terms of reaching a wider demographic of people. The phone is only compatible with a certain plan from T-Mobile: an individual plan, to be precise. So, in order to have this phone, anyone with a family plan will have to split their plan up and end up paying $30+ more on their monthly bill. And this DOESN’T include all of the extra features! Wouldn’t it be enough, paying over $500 + the $30/month data package? For a company that, up until this point, has been a model of corporate excellence (with regards to employees and consumers) I would have expected Google Inc. to have given some forethought to the MASSIVE demographic that they would be excluding in releasing the phone under these conditions. Shame on Google.
