ZOMG The Google Phone Is "Like An iPhone On Beautifying Steroids"
Michael Arrington
Dec 11, 2009

We told you the Google phone was confirmed. And now some Googler’s seem to be confirming it, too. There is a lot of chatter on Twitter about Google employees with HTC-built unlocked Google Phones running Android 2.1. And the devices look to be coming out in January.

We noticed a Twitter message from a Google Program Manager, who writes “Stuck in mass of traffic leaving work post last all hands of 2009. ZOMG we had fireworks and we all got the new Google phone. It’s beautiful.”

Another guy, Jason Howell, says he had his hands on the device, which he says is made by HTC and is running Android 2.1: “The new Google Phone runs on HTC hardware. I saw it w/ Android 2.1. Homescreen has new visual enhancements like animated desktop wallpaper.”

“Supposedly, Google employees were given tons of these phones today. unlocked,” he adds.

And one last one: “A friend from Google showed me the new Android 2.1 phone from HTC coming out in Jan. A sexy beast. Like an iPhone on beautifying steroids.”

It looks to us like Google may have handed out a lot of the new Google Phone devices today to employees, and naturally they’re showing it to friends.

Yeah, it’s a hot, sexy mess. And I mean that in a good way. Similar form-factor to the iPhone, but with a smooth-brushed-metal-looking shell instead of a glossy one. And perhaps a smidgen lighter.

Super fast, speech-to-text in EVERY app, awesome “live wallpapers” in the background that respond to touch in really beautiful ways. Like water ripples that emanate out from a touch.

I find it strange that if “tons” of Google employees were given one today, there is still not a single leaked picture.

HTC, does that mean T-Mobile? The unlocked phones were handed out to employees, I doubt they will be sold that way. Lots of corporate functions like all-hands restrict cameras and phones being in the facility. I work for a large corporate company that has the same restrictions when they make large announcements to employees.

  • http://www.jasonhowell.net Jason Howell

I was given the phone for a very limited time from a Google employee. It resembled an HTC Hero to my eyes, though a tiny bit smaller and DEFINITELY thinner. I kept looking over at the guy using it, thinking to myself that it WAS a Hero, but when I asked, he spilled the beans. Google employees were handed the phones today. He reiterated that there would probably be a decent amount of information hitting the tubes this weekend. With my limited time with the device, I saw it running Android 2.1. The home screen had this animated background image that looked nifty with red and blue lasers shooting across it. The gray bar at the bottom of the home screen was replaced with the “house” line art used on the face of most Android phones that takes you to the home screen. Looked sleeker. Super light phone too.

This phone was unlocked, though the guy had thrown an AT&T sim card into it.

That’s about all I was able to glean in my minute’s worth of dabbling. It was sleek and nice looking, but I am scratching my head trying to figure out what the real difference is between this and any of the newer HTC Android phones. Scanning the apps, I didn’t see anything that really stood out as different from what I have on my Droid. And being that it was Android 2.1, the only really differences I saw were a few visual ones. So it doesn’t appear (in its current state) to really be offering “the *real* Android” experience that’s mind blowingly different from what’s out there so far. Maybe I just didn’t dig deep enough to find it though.

    Sorry I couldn’t snap a photo. :(

  • weatherman

If this story is true, that would probably be the point – handing a bunch of phones that are not available yet to employees would be an intentional leak designed to disrupt sales of competitors phones. Not that mom is going to NOT buy you that iPhone because she hears that there’s an HTC phone coming that might be better, but for some I suppose it would work.

That said, I don’t believe that 1) this is the so-called Google phone or 2) that this is ZOMG. Yet another Android HTC phone without a keyboard isn’t going to kill anything just yet, and Android isn’t killing iPhone for a long while.

  • Steve

Will it be a dev phone in the same shape as the DP1 and the Ion, subsequently released as an HTC handset on other networks, or is HTC just acting as the ODM on a true “Google Phone”?

Surely the former would be the more realistic scenario, with Google flogging them unlocked to anyone with a dev account. However, if the rumours are true that Microsoft is thinking about building their own, then it would make sense for GOOG to get into the hardware market too.

+1 use MoFuse and get it done immediately so we don’t have to wait any longer.

  • ProfessionalGun

Well. . . having the hottest Android phone on the market was fun while it lasted.

That’s one big thing the iPhone has going for it – when you buy one the day it’s released, you can be reasonably sure you’re going to have the top of the line iPhone for a year.

When you buy an Android phone – you have to face the fact that a better Android phone is likely to hit the streets well within 3 months’ time.

Strange thing to complain about, I agree. . . . Classify it under “good problems”. I just don’t want to be feeling buyers remorse any time soon! (And nothing brings on that feeling like being locked into a 2 year contract.)

I’m digging my Droid a lot. . . I just know what gear-lust can do to a tech enthusiast. It ain’t pretty.

  • Jack Ratio

That’s an assumption not a fact.
HTC passion/Dragon due to be release in
that date. Be odd if the company (htc) decide
    to compete with herself.

    The googler wrote:
“…and we all got the *new* Google phone. It’s beautiful.”

“The *new* google phone” as oppose to “The Google Phone”.

I’m willing to bet 100$ that “The *new* google phone”
is in fact the HTC Dragon.

  • Alberto Vildosola

i don’t think google would make such a big deal if it was just another htc android phone, plus isn’t the passion coming like in april or march, that’s what the leaked roadmap said didn’t it

Googlers know a lot a about a lot. Beauty isn’t one of them.

All Android phones have been fugly compared to the iPhone so far (one of the reasons they’re not selling outstide the US), and in the lifestyle accessory market, that’s a dealbreaker. Unfortunately, most techies can’t seem to tell the difference, so we keep getting reports of “beautiful” new phones when they’re just generic pieces of bland, cheap looking tech. Android partners? How are they partners? They’re not. They don’t pay for Android. It’s free. It’s an open playing field, and they’re jumping in.

The “partners” aren’t going to go to MSFT. Why? Because that wouldn’t help them sell more phones because Win Mobile fricking sucks, and everyone who touches a phone with Android or Iphone knows it. Android was their best option for staying relevant. Either that or go the way of Samsung and build their own crappy OS. Either way, they couldn’t compete without Android (or some other open mobile OS), and they know it. Android just happens to be the best of the open mobile OS’s.

I’m surmising that this will be Google’s answer to Apple’s iPod Touch – a carrier free Google branded Android device. It will have WiFi and you’ll probably be able to make calls using Google Voice + Gizmo5 VoIP. However, it appears that it may have cellular chips/radio so you can use a SIM and connect to a mobile carrier, but this will be a feature of the device, not the central reason for being. It is not a phone, at least not primarily.

Since it won’t be subsidized by a carrier, I assume it will have a steep purchase price ($400-$600?).

Killer Google Phone scenario: use Google Voice # for all calls and SMS. Connect via WiFi where available and use a T-mobile pre-paid SIM on HSPA 7.2/HSPA+21 when necessary. The mobile carrier becomes the back-up connectivity commodity and Google wins wins wins.

My thoughts exactly. Combine that with the report that it looked very much like a Hero that’s thinner and running 2.1 and that equals the Bravo/Passion/Dragon. I just used google images and compared the Eris with the leaked Bravo pic and that would make complete sense. Many people causally describe Android as Google phones.

What if the Iphone is the AOL of this decade? On the one hand, a game-changing tool that changed the way people access the web, but on the other, a closed, simplistic system at risk of being surpassed by an open platform that will be more attractive as the user based becomes more and more sophisticated? Why isn’t android versus iphone the same battle as microsoft OS versus apple OS in the 1980s? And, what’s the real niche the iphone will carve out in the matter the apple desktop systems have with creative professionals and artists?

I’m with you, Chan – that the Droid is a stock Android experience was a big selling point for me. UI skins are pretty, but I don’t want to wait on a 3rd party to make compatibility adjustments before an OS update can be applied.

2.1 should be in the hands of Droid users next month – probably right around the time this new phone is coming out. Looking forward to it! Updates always make it feel like Christmas.

AND – I guess there’s plenty of reason to be excited about the market being saturated with incredible Android phones: The developer community and the Android Market will continue to grow. BRING IT ON.

Google is building their own branded phone because android is going nowhere with the current android devices. Droid sales and Android total sales so far must be horrible!

Samsung is building their own OS, because they have the brains to realize the best way to profits is to follow RIM, Apple, Palm and Nokia in building their own platform and services around devices.

I also expect to see more search engines to compete with Google in 2010.

Apple – hear me, and hear me well. Google is doing to you what Linux is doing to microsoft. To your Safari, they release Chrome, a leaner, more developer-friendly version (with extensions!) To your iPhone, they are releasing the Google Android. Yes, MS and Google are both into hardware, but yours will turn into a battle of style+closed ecosystem vs simplicity+open ecosystem. Cf: Microsoft’s Win32/.NET vs Linux/BSD. Cf: pretty webpages vs Web 2.0 style pages. It will take 10 years but eventually simplicity will overtake prettiness. And it will be a sad day because I like pretty stuff.

The Tweet this article quotes in the headline names the Google phone, while the headline is written Google Phone. The devil’s in the details. This is not the Google Phone that will piss off all the manufacturers and re-define the role of carriers. It’s just a mobile development lab for Google employees to test new Android (and hardware) features before they’re implemented into released Android revs.

I bet Verizon and Motorola are pissed that so many people are questioning their DROID purchases based on this mis-information. By the time this gets straightened out, a critical pre-Christmas shopping weekend will have passed. I’d say this one’s on Google for letting their employees have it and mention it without first issuing an official press release stating the device’s true purpose. Lucky Android’s free to the manufacturers, but feelings will be hurt.

    Google’s hasty clarification this morning:

Checked out the Droid in person the other day.

Killer features are definitely multi-tasking and Maps with GPS. Display is also superior. The interface, not so much.

However, I don’t think any phone will ever beat the iPhone in terms of hard/software aesthetics and simplicity. The whole design is as iconic as Kubrick’s monolith.

Every other smartphone is riddled with buttons and elements that contradict having a touchscreen.

The iPhone needs multi-tasking now as much as it needed copy+paste. It’ll be the only thing Android has going on, once the Google GPS app and Verizon come on board.

  • magnum

The tweet that feed us all. I must say this is one of the ‘good’ news we will be receiving after new year. But what irritates most of the users
is the prediction that the goog phone will be powered by AT&T? geez.. now that’s a ‘ZOMG’ situation… but why?,,,,

  • http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting.php twistyaction

I think that as of the Droid’s arrival, you’re going to start to see a delay in how soon features that debut on Android will appear on the iPhone. While Google certainly values the user info and ad placement the iPhone interface offers, it’d rather drive early adopters towards Android devices and the functionality offered by hardware made for the Google experience and apps that can fully exploit said functionality. I think buttons that have universal uses across apps have a place on touchscreen smartphones. That is, until they’re replaced by gestures or another input method. Menu, back and home come to mind.

Three comments. One, this would be a fairly material acknowledgement that Google’s loosely coupled approach is not “good enough” for the mass market in mobile (relatively to Apple’s tightly, integrated end-to-end story).

Two, by doing this, Google looses the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” positioning with handset makers, developers and carriers (the “anyone but apple” crowd), and those who to date have bifurcated the market as Evil Apple vs. Do No Evil Google. Now, the two companies look similarly positioned.

Three, the iPhone Killer meme, and the “inevitability” of Android story – great handset or no – still hungers for better tools, more apps, a more compelling Android Market (workflow, experience, marketplace) and an iTunes-worthy Media client.music library, something that I blogged about in:

Android’s ‘Inevitability’ and the Missing Leg

So, every day Google know more and more about your internet activity and collect more and more data (mostly without your knowledge or approval)

Pretty soon they will know what you do with your mobile phone too (without your knowledge or approval).

Pretty soon Google will own your ass.

Good product or not, putting your eggs in one basket is going to mean very bad things in the long run.

    1. A GooglePhone would only make sense on GSM bands with a quad band chip such as Moto’s to cover both T-Mobile, two AT&T bands and the other GSM US bands

    2. All Android developer Phones are not Hardware OEM branded..

    3. Could have called the Chicago OEM that distributes ADPs to deny or confirm if it was GooglePhone.

As I have stated before if you are going to report on andoroid get better informed information..perhaps via an informed Android applications Developer..
