Google Officially Launching Chrome Extensions Next Week
MG Siegler
Dec 5, 2009

Screen shot 2009-12-05 at 2.53.52 PMA couple weeks ago, Google unveiled its Chrome Extensions site after clues began popping up that a full-on push for extension support in their browser was imminent. Unfortunately, that site was only meant for extension developers who were allowed to upload their creations to Google. On the page, Google promised that end users who were looking for these extensions would have a way to do so “soon.” That will happen next week, we’ve learned.

Two sources close to the situation say that Google plans to unveil its Extensions Gallery at some point next week, probably in the middle of the week. This makes sense since Add-on-Con 09, a conference devoted to browser add-ons, is taking place next Friday, and Google Chrome is a Gold Sponsor of the event. Obviously, Google will probably want to have something they can actually show off at the event, rather than just a developer dashboard.

Apparently, the Extensions Gallery will be much like the Chrome Themes Gallery. It will be a page that lists a bunch of extensions and has a button to one-click download the ones you want. Presumably there will also be a link to learn more about what each extension actually does.

Several developers already have their extensions ready to go for Chrome. We’ve profiled Aviary’s and Shareaholic’s recently. And actually, there have been hundreds of extensions unofficially available for Chrome for some time via sites like Chrome Extensions. This morning we profiled 11 of the best ones found there.

Initially, Extension support will only be for the Windows-based version of Chrome. Even though the launch of the beta version of Chrome for Mac is imminent, that version will not have extension support built-in. However, the latest builds of Chromium (the open-source browser that Chrome is built off of) for Mac does support extensions, and even has an extension manager that works. It would appear that the Linux build of Chrome will support extensions whenever that beta is available.

Extensions will be very important for Chrome as it attempts to hit Google’s stated 10 percent market share goal in the next couple of years. Extensions have been one of the keys to the success of Firefox, as it continues to steal market share from the once utterly dominant Internet Explorer.

Here is hoping AdBlock, or some other ad blocking extension, hits the scene ASAP. The only 2 extensions I use in Firefox, during the few times I actually use it now, are AdBlock and DownThemAll.

Yeah, I used Chrome pretty hard when it was released, but the no Adblock thing made me switch back to Firefox.

SRWare Iron, based off of the same source as Chrome, is an alternative with Adblock capabilities, but in the last build I found it messed with the browsing history. Ditched it as well.

  • asdfg

If you go look in the Chrome Extensions gallery, you’ll find that there is in fact a very nice version of Adblock+.

  • tatsuke

Nice. I have to admit I haven’t got around to check out all the new extension stuff. I’m lazy like that.

Good stuff though, I was thoroughly impressed with Chrome.

The latest Chromium builds for Linux already have this functionality built-in, and they announce it when you install and run a recent build for the first time.

The Chromium build I installed from December 2nd had this, and it popped up with a message when I ran it, offering to show me extensions.

Finally. It’s such a bummer having to switch back and forth between Chrome and Firefox just for the toolbars.

Does this mean for the beta AND stable channels or just beta?

Hard to believe they will bump stable up that fast as slow as they’ve been with it.

The adblockers for Chrome are hiding ads not blocking them right now not sure if they will ever have what they need for blocking them and I haven’t seen anything close to a toolbar come down the pike except for Roboforms custom build of Chrome.

Great info here. I will be checking this out now. All the best.

    Really waiting for that. Thanks.

Is there a genuine ad block now or are adsweep and adblock+ still just hiding ads?

Extensions are built in much better in chrome. No need to restart browser after installing / uninstalling / updating the addons . It also does not slow down with addons. Startup time is the same . Firefox watch out. Chrome will now kick your ass

  • http://siddy.in Sidharth

The biggest missing link in Chrome till now was add ons. Many Firefox users swore by them and said we cant move to Chrome (even though its a better browser) because of lack of extensions support. Now they will have no reason. I think its time for a full rewrite of the Firefox browser to reduce the memory hog that it has become

  • diabl0

well to be different, what I am aiming for the new extension is the ability to read more javascripts faster to put mozilla firefox to the grave.

I just love playing js powered games in my browser and I must say chrome is getting too impressive. Hopefully a plugin can enhance it more!

There will also be extensions made available on the droid, Aris and MyTouch through the Chrome browser.

With reports of Google controlling what addons gets published they will never be able to compete with Firefox.

And not only that, extensions also work on Chromium for Linux. I’m using the Chromium PPA for months now, and since last month or so, extensions really work. I’m currently using the Chritter and Chrowety extensions on Chromium daily for Linux. And they work like a charm (although Chritter makes Chromium crash sometimes).

Neat. That, of course, requires that one has extensions support in their browser – which the regular Chrome stream doesn’t have yet.
