Hi, My Name Is Mike And I Was A FishVille Addict
Michael Arrington
Dec 4, 2009

Rumor has it that actress Salma Hayek never smoked before filming the movie Frida. But she had to learn how to play artist Frida Kahlo, and after the movie she had trouble quitting.

I know exactly how she feels. Because part of the fallout of all the Scamville posts I wrote last month is a lingering addiction to one of Zynga’s games, Fishville (yes, the game that Facebook shut down for three days for violations of their advertising rules).

A lot of the information in those Scamville posts came from good old fashioned research. I played the games to see what would happen. At first I thought they were ridiculous. I was growing acai trees and milking cows on Farmville, slaying the undead on Vampire Wars, and hitting mafia bosses with crowbars on Mob Wars. And of course I clicked on the offers and even paid cash a few times for currency.

It was all business of course. Until I noticed that I was going back to FishVille, even after the series was completed. I had 8 tanks going and hundreds of fish being grown from eggs to adults. Those were sold off and I bought more eggs and the cycle continued. Before long I was at level 34 – so high that there I had access to every kind of fish that you could buy. I’d racked up 808,647 experience points. I was proud of my tank’s pristine condition and cornucopia of decorations. Notice the bevy of happy, well-fed fish:

A big part of these games is the urge to go back to them multiple times per day. To feed the fish. Or harvest the corn. Wait too long and the fish dies, the corn wilts, and you lose currency and experience points. I was making sure to check back in regularly on my fish so they didn’t die. I actually thought to myself at one point “wow, when I go on vacation I’ll need to plan ahead so the fish don’t starve.”

At some point I was talking about FishVille in the office and a couple of people asked why in the hell I was still playing the game with the posts completed. I realized then, in a flash, that I had a problem. I was addicted to FishVille. Total. Loser.

I quit that day. Cold turkey. I checked back in a couple of days later to see what kind of situation I had on my hands. It was ugly. Most of the fish were dead, the few left alive were starving and the aquarium was dirty and mucked up. I took a screenshot and got out quickly.

And this morning I checked one last time on my FishVille situation. All of the fish are now extremely dead. The tank is a mess.

Before you laugh too hard at me (or after you’re done), realize this: seventy million people a month play FarmVille on Facebook alone (it was 60 million last month). There are Facebook groups on FarmVille addiction. Here are some tips from an ex addict on how to avoid becoming addicted. And YouTube is littered with people admitting their addicted to these games.

Social gaming addiction is a real problem. It may be a somewhat funny problem, but it’s still a problem. And it’s no wonder that kids without access to credit cards are taking all these sketchy offers to get game currency. They’re hooked.

Hi, my name is Ingrid.. and I am a Farmville addict. Dare to judge me, .. don’t.. anyone can one day find themselves in my place.

It all started with me planting strawberries on my empty farm. Now, a month later.. I am a guru, ranking up in levels, gathering Farmville coins and taking care of my many animals. I grow cotton. Spend FV money as there was no tomorrow and gather awards for active participation. Loser.

So don’t worry you are not alone in this world of Farmvilles, Fishvilles.. and what not Villes. :)

But yeah, the game is highly addictive. I guess it’s just something that has to do with our psychology. If we have taken on task to do something, then we don’t want to let it die, or get out of hand.. so we just keep on playing it, even if we don’t want to, even if we know that it is stupid.

And yes, for children, it must be highly addictive. They just see the colorful pictures, happy fishies swimming around and tons of possibilities what to do. AND even more possibilities when they cough up some cash ..

    Nice article!

    Ingrid

Doesn’t surprise me at all… All you need is love, but the driving force on earth still is…. nr1: GUILT! So whether fysical or virtual, it is very hard to give up care even if you know it’s not “real”

  • Josiah Kiehl

This is more or less why MMOs are addictive. The games themselves are not so amazing, but they draw you back in by keeping the “carrot on a stick” always a little further along.

They give you reasons to log in every day, then know full well you’ll continue to play for several hours before you log off again. (Before I quit, years ago, World of Warcraft had just instituted “Daily Quests” that you could do once a day… hits on the same psychological features.)

It’s really hard to quit these things, and they’re not even great games.

The creator of Braid, a brilliantly intelligent and beautiful platformer calls these types of games downright unethical. His opinion comes out in Braid, where the game is very much about engaging the player and making them feel good about the time they’re spending playing, rather than just creating a compulsive “oof I have to do this or I’ll fall behind” sort of feeling.

Braid is short, but very well done and very enjoyable.

So, how much did you end up paying? I feel those who pay for these social games, really end up paying a lot.

Great post. I’m incredibly interested to see the time spent in these games on a daily basis. With the advent of Farmville and Restaurant City, especially, Facebok must see a huge time-on-site boost. That’s beyond the obvious ad revenue that has been mentioned here repeatedly.

  • mlist

I smell a pulitzer and I also smell those rotten fish, can you flush them down the virtual toilet or will that just cost you more?

  • Kelly C

The addiction and the stories you have read are real, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Michael, I know the feeling you had at the moment you realized that you had a problem. Way to head it off right away. What kind of funding do you think is available for a rehab facility against the games like this? Maybe Zinga should pay into a fund so people could get their lives back and receive the help they need for free.

My live feed it cluttered with farmville updates. So bad in fact that I rarely check Facebook anymore. The only thing you can do is hide the feeds from your friends who are playing it, but then I’d have an empty feed! Facebook should implement a way to hide or filter out these sorts of updates. They are so annoying.

  • http://www.sorengordhamer.com soreng

Thanks for the honesty, Mike. At least you know you know what it is like. Good to see more people write about things like this. Though what is an “enjoying game” and what is an “addiction” may take some time for us to decipher ….. but eventually we cannot fool ourselves.

Hahaha. FishVille. Hooked. Puns, I get them. No but seriously, that’s the reason I’ve never touched these games. I just don’t have the time to deal with them. I’m sure some of them are fun (in a weird sort of way, like Mario Party is fun or Dokapon Kingdom [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokapon_Kingdom] is fun), but I won’t play them because I’d never stop playing them.

  • sprfrkr

You could have sold the fish right? Instead you just let them die in your tank. They could have gone to good homes :(

I’ve never really understood why games as an entertainment medium elicit this kind of cultural snobbishness.

When I was 13 I got really into comic books. I started spending most of my money on it, perhaps all of my spare money. I was showing up at the comic book shop the day a new issue came out. I worked at a comic book store for trade and maniacally collected every issue of my favorite series. It took no more skill to read a comic book than to play Fishville, but it was fun to lose yourself in that world.

It was called a hobby, and it was fun even if the serial nature of the books (“Tune in next week to find out how Batman get’s out!”) was meant to keep me hooked. It’s not smoking, or drinking. It’s entertainment.

When a person get’s into other entertainment medium he’s a movie buff, or a comic book buff, or a sports fan. Somehow people who play games a lot get some kind of shame and stigma associated. I’m not sure I really understand or care to understand the cultural elitism.

I got hooked on Cafe World for 2 weeks- i was setting alarms on my phone for when my frickin’ chickens where ready so they didn’t spoil.

All started as ‘research’ for a product we’re doing in the virtual goods sector.

Oddly, i never once felt compelled to buy anything however…

Gaming is for losers. Its like any other heroin addict. People which play games are trying to escape reality, they do, they become addicted and the government labels them a loser.

As a level 204 mafia wars player I have to sympathize. Let’s also not forget the fact that many of your real world friends then block your facebook feed so that they dont see all the annoying posts. Just like a real drug addict the isolation comes too. :)

The other night mafia wars was down for fifteen minutes and it was hilarious to see the streem of mafia wars players who posted things like…”ummm, now what do I do?”

I was actually ticked at Zynga for a bug that made it so I could no longer play mafia wars on my iphone…then realizing how pitiful it was that this bothered me so much I started to think…thank god! Holy crap, it turns out I have a girlfriend and friends back in the real world. Who knew!

Sheesh, at least if I had done heroin I would’ve gotten thinner. lol

Oh my friend, how right you are. I JUST started with farmville….and it was my Wife’s fault, as she got me into it. I am level 8 or so, but I can tell you that it is addictive. I get up in the middle of the nights to harvest my farm and plant new seeds. This is getting out of hand and I, just like yourself need to go cold turkey.

  • Daniel

I’m not addicted to Farmvillle. I do play it on an almost daily basis, but it’s fun. I’ve never paid money for the in game cash because I feel like that would be cheating. It seems harmless to me. :\

  • http://www.thechapexindifference.com ChapMasterX

Up until the TechCrunch exposé on Zynga, I played quite a few of their games. Farmville was the primary one. However, I was noticing that I was starting to spend too much time on the game, and thinking about what to do next all the time. I had even mathematically figured out which crops did the best based on time, my personal available time, and even set an alarm to remind myself to harvest. I was really starting to think that maybe I should back off a bit.

When TechCrunch posted their articles on Zynga, and after I looked into their accusations in greater detail, I decided that I never wanted to have anything to do with Zynga again. Sure, they may have come ‘clean’ now, but to get to where they are, they have monetarily raped many people. I even remove any Zunga ads from Facebook if I see them.

That was priceless :) I haven’t tried Fishville yet I do play Farmville but I only check it in the morning and evening. They are addictive though, I stopped playing Mafia Wars because it was becoming an addiction. I’ve never bought into the game (buying extra money and items), I won’t do that, it’s just a game, nothing there is real. There’s no need to try to keep up with the Joneses , build your own tank or farm and don’t worry about what someone else has, you’ll get it in time, it’s definately not worth paying real money for a virtual item. :)

my question to those millions of users who no longer wish to play game, or prefer to play another game, why not receive some value for your time spent/invested on that game? Now I remember why I stopped gaming – it used to require skill; it appears all you need now is a mouse and time to kill (mousepad and skill optional).

  • Dante

Yeah… I know people that are so hardcore into that Mafia Wars shit it’s ridiculous. Im not talking about college students, or WoW type people. Im talking about pretty well off, have 3 kids, trains for the stars, own their own business type people. Its ridiculous. They play that shit until 5:30 in the morning, go to work, come home and play more… They’ve even set up Skype accounts, and all coordinate their mob attacks on different people. Its the craziest shit I’ve ever seen.

  • meh

I’m pretty sure Steve was referring to the screenshot profile pic.

  • chris

You can block that application. You’ll find a control that appears when you rollover it to the right of that message. One of the options is “Block this Application”. No more anything from Farmville. So glad I did it.

  • James

Mark is a total visionary. The foundation of true social gaming is in place. Look at the presentation. It’s total crap now – very cartoonish and flat.

BUT just wait until technology allows for a much more realistic experience. You think this is addiction now? This market will blow up when companies like OTOY can make this happen.

  • yeah

omg. for the past week the guys in my class have been discussing this fucken game, mafia war, and the girls just look at them like they’re stupid. ugh. what is this game?

  • yeah

i saw all that vibrant colour and immediately thought, stay away. it’s like cotton candy. you know it’s addictive like crack and you just need to be stronger than your desires. i never get addicted to stuff like this at all. i mean if i didn’t have much of a life and if i was a huge loser (i am a semi loser) then i would be into these games, but otherwise, no way jose.

I play MW a bit, but never to that extent. I never knew it was possible to play long term. I just do jobs until my energy is depleted, then wait like 8 hours for new energy.

Now if the Zynga games would actually stop asking me to publish to my feeds after I’ve changed the settings we’d be golden and I could deal with my addictions.

Well, I totally agree with your conclusion; social games addiction is indeed some serious stuff. The impact goes down to the little ones too; kids.

I will share the story of my 7-year old brother, who has been active on facebook for over a year now using my adult brother account, primarly to play farmville. The truth is, he just inaugurated his official facebook account! I’m not exactly happy about this. Do I want my younger siblings to be tech-savvy, hell yeah! but is this right?

It just feels wrong! one incedent that really puzzled me, is I got him to behave by forbiding him from playing farmville as a punishment. The other face of the story, is he kept weeping and begging to check on his animlas and plants so they don’t die.

Heh, I actually felt evil for a sec there!

These games require MAXIMUM of 30 minutes a day. You need to be sensible. I still play fishville, @lvl 50 – grow fishes that need to be fed etc after 48 / 72 hours.. takes 15 minutes to sell/buy new. So it’s not that bad.. 15 mins of fishville in 2 days doesn’t hurt anything..
