Leaked Video: Swyping Versus iPhone Typing. (Swype For Android Is Next).
Erick Schonfeld
Nov 23, 2009

A year ago, Swype launched a new way to type on a touchscreen phone at TechCrunch50. Swype was created by the inventor of the T9 predictive typing system used on most phones today because he felt that new text input methods for small touchscreens are sorely needed. Today, the startup announced the first phone to use the technology will be the Samsung Omnia II on Verizon.

As you can see in the video above, which shows a side-by-side comparison of typing on the Omnia II versus on an iPhone, the way you type with Swype is you literally swipe your finger from one letter to the next as fast as you can. In the video, the Swypist beats the iPhone typist hands down, so to speak. But the comparison is more illustrative than definitive. A practiced iPhone typer can bang out a few sentences just as fast. I tried it myself and was able to basically tie the Swype user on the video. Still, I’ll withhold judgment until I can actually try a Swype phone myself.

More phones with Swype built in will be launched next year. The Omnia II is a Windows Mobile phone. But Swype will be included in a new Android phone in the first quarter of 2010.

Will Swype give Android an edge over the iPhone?

Nice idea, I suppose, but after learning the phrase, I could type faster than the Swype user did, and that was even making more mistakes than I usually do. That said, maybe I could type even faster with Swype.

Either way, I’d love to give it a try. it looks pretty interesting.

There’s been an iPhone app that does this for ages…I forget what it’s called, but I didn’t like it very much

I’ve published research on new text input techniques, and I think the biggest hurdle to overcome in commercializing a new approach is that people just aren’t willing to spend the time to ramp up to entirely new things. Researchers have found many new approaches with great performance, but nobody will use them if it takes forever to learn them. And this is why Swype is a good idea. It keeps the familiar Qwerty key layout, and only asks the user to make a relatively small adjustment to how they type. I don’t know if it will be successful, but I think it has a better chance than anything else I’ve seen out there.

  • http://webdarter.com vickivanv

ShapeWriter on the iPhone does the same thing. They have an alternate keyboard that is supposed to be more efficient to use, but I had trouble memorizing it and it slowed me down a lot. So I went back the the qwerty keyboard, which was faster for me. I think it would be pretty fast if you took the time to get used to it. I’m pretty slow on the iphone keyboard (when are we getting some haptic feedback on that?), so this would be a nice option to have.

Same here. I typed the phrase approximately 10 seconds faster than the ‘Swypist’.

  • http://www.crunchbase.com/person/erick-schonfeld Erick Schonfeld

Typing is ingrained into people even if it is ergonomically inefficient. That’s why we still have Qwerty keyboards. Once you learn something like that it becomes muscle memory.

  • http://www.schoolshift.com Dan Kalmar

The Swyping technology seems pretty cool. I first saw it in a ‘Random’ episode when Kevin Rose was talking about it and he showed the pitch video from TechCrunch50.

When I first got the iPhone, I found it very hard to type, but then you just sort of get the technique down (especially with the landscape keyboard). It always makes me laugh when I see the point that a certain phone has a keyboard, and the iPhone doesn’t, and I think to myself, I don’t want a keyboard, I love that it’s all touch!

I think the Swype technology is going to be difficult to learn, but in the end I think some people will prefer it, but many others will be just as fast and efficient, and prefer the normal keyboard just as much.

  • Pierre

No, it’s available in the app store. Sadly I just can’t remember the name..

  • Rak

Yes, a practiced Iphone typer will be faster then the typer in the video.

But a practiced swyper will be much faster then the swyper in the video as well.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kyle_Martin/8211429 Kyle Martin

I’m not sure if “swyping” would be a great experience on lower end phones…it has to be pretty taxing on the processor.

  • http://sheer-design.com Dan Sheerman

Ditto, I was done by the time the Swypist hit the first ‘the’; sure would be nice to compare the two though.

  • Jean-Michel Decombe

Very cool idea, although I am not so sure about having a finger constantly dragging, and thus in so much contact with the screen all the time, not to mention that it is probably stressful when one-hand typing.

Also, as others mentioned, the guy with the iPhone in the video is not very fast at all (I am faster while holding the phone and typing with the same hand and thumb, and I am far from being the fastest typist).

I love the letter feedback that pops up above the key on iPhone, and they do not have that, although maybe for good reasons. On iPhone, however, holding the letter lets you select accentuated characters and other alternate characters, which is especially great when you type in language other than English. Not a deal breaker for SMS, but for email, certainly.

The app on the iPhone that does the same thing is called WritingPad if you want to try the swiping. I downloaded it over a year ago and just remembered now!

There’s another app called Hot Typer which uses a mixture of typing and swiping, very cool idea too.

I think swiping is a great idea and it will definitely have a future.

Looks like the type of technology that needs to be tried to be believed. I have no interested in learning a new way to type.

Some bonus feature: Click on the video to popup YouTube, and you’ll get a 26:50 long video.
The article related content spans to 1:30, after that there’s an empty frame, and after 23:54 things start getting interesting. There’s some recorded phone conversation, sounds like an interview, which talks about margins, someone being on board of Fonera and red herrings. I wonder how it got merged with the video :)

  • M Park

From what I understand, ShapeWriter and Swype share the same general concept, but behind the scenes work quite differently. Therefore, vast differences in accuracy and usability. I suspect that the expertise and lessons learned gained from developing T9 makes Swype the superior solution.

  • http://twitter.com/socialcoop Ben Ackles

Apple’s multitouch & virtual keyboard technology is clearly their competitive advantage. This is a big win for Google and a bigger win for consumers. I’m an iPhone fan-boy but I welcome competition.

  • http://ryanglasgow.net Ryan

The QWERTY keyboard arrangement was originally developed to SLOW DOWN people using typewriter’s so they wouldn’t jam. After electronic typewriters were developed the Dvorak arrangement was developed but studies concluded it was more time consuming to retrain everyone who already was familiar with the QWERTY keyboard and it never caught on.

We’re going to see a lot of innovation over the next 10 years regarding input input devices such as OLED/E-Ink keyboards and completely new input devices. Apple’s gesture-based input seems to be the beginning a decade that rethinks the human/computer interface.

  • Schmich

What would also be interesting to see is what is the fastest for the average Joe? The iPhone user is slow compared to most here reading TechCrunch but maybe he has average typing speed. And also, maybe the “Swyper” has average swyping speed.

  • http://www.nomadicapps.com Brian

I beat the swype guy on my iphone. I had two errors. Swype came out Swyoe both times. I fixed both errors and was still done before the Swype demo on the left.

To get the most out of the iPhone, don’t try to be precise. Blast away and trust the predictive text engine. I think Apple’s product manager suggested, “Use the force”. Been working for me for two years now.

  • Sam

I type with both thumbs with no problem. I picked up the iPhone and gave what they wrote in the video and I beat swipe no problem at all. Still a very interesting idea.

  • PC

+1. The person on the left types like a veteran Swype typer. The person the right types like a person who just got their iPhone this week. Plus the person on the right is taking the time to type perfectly as opposed to typing faster and allowing the predictive and corrective algorithms to do its job.

I type 3x faster than that on my iPhone with both my thumbs.

  • PC

Two thumbs is way faster than one index finger. Sure there are errors but usually the corrective algorithms do a good job of fixing that for you.

  • Ali B

-1 . The swype person is using only ONE hand which is key!

You can type as fast as the swype guy but with two hansd.

  • James

This is NOT true, and is a common fallacy.

QWERTY was developed so letters close to each other in words, weren’t close to each other in the typewriter, so the hammers wouldn’t jam when typing fast. This also makes sense to speed up typing (ideally you would want alternate letters given to alternate hands).

There was no intention to slow people down whatsoever. There is also no independent evidence that DVORAK is better or faster.

    More here:
    http://reason.com/archives/1996/06/01/typing-errors

  • Ali B

Also the iphone always feels like its gonna slip out of my hands when i’m typing with two hands on the go. I think typing as fast as I currently do but with one hand would be much nicer.

Why can’t hardware designers just design a bloody decent keyboard? Blogs like TC should be endlessly mocking horrors like the Droid’s keyboard, let alone the iPhone’s lack of one. I *hate* every single thing about the Sidekick… except its keyboard. But it’s so good it’s kept me stuck on the platform since the B&W. The G1 came close, but its famous chin was a dealbreaker. (Although even there critics got it wrong: It’s not the chin per se; it’s the lack of symmetry. Andy Rubin got it right the first time and should have stuck with it.) The Touch Pro2 is as close as HTC’s come, but $350 for an obsolete-when-it-was-released WinMo 6.1 device? No.

I’d get an iPhone if it had a keyboard. (I bought an iPod touch when it came out to see if I could adapt. But it’s unusable and I don’t even know where the thing is now.) Maybe TC or MobileCrunch could talk to designers and find out why companies even bother designing aberrations like the Droid’s keyboard. I can’t be the only person for whom a usable keyboard is a dealbreaker.

Is this video really “leaked”? It was demo’d last year and all this does is show it on the new phone? Seems like the leak was planned more than anything?

I saw the demo for this last year and was impressed. Lots of scenarios where it would be easier to swype one handed than to use 2 hands to type. Like driving, performing surgery, holding my childs hand while crossing a busy intersection, or for countless other scenarios that exist where having a free hand to perform other critical tasks that only partially require my full attention. :)

In all seriousness, this seems to be a plus for one handed data entry rather than two handed.

The UI I remember seeing was actually on a standard phone with the 0-9 */# pad and this method of entry was far faster than T9.

I easily bested the Swype time using my blackberry storm in portrait mode (suretype keyboard is amazing). I truly don’t understand why smartphone makers insists on cramming a full qwerty keyboard on a touchscreen. Combining a few of the letters with predictive text is much, much easier.

  • http://www.incspear.com Jay

i heard that swype technology is way superior, but still cant compare to the texting speed of middle school or high school kids, specially girls- they are more advanced in using fingers……. faster than robots ….:)

  • hrmmm

    here’s your sign

  • Fritz Larco

Seems pretty cool. I did as if my iPhone had the swype technology on it just to feel the experience but I realized that it’s tiring. It seems that you can only use one finger vs the two thumbs on the iPhones, so you can’t go as fast. With two fingers you split the energy used. I imagine that the advantage on swype would be less errors because you can visualize what the next letter in the word is and go there with your finger. Nevertheless, with the lack of multitouch use, I felt my one thumb getting tired after trying it.
Besides, I easily beat the “swypist” with my iPhone on first try. Dunno how successful it will be, but it is innovative.

Ditto. I was thinking the same thing. Landscape mode is more ideal for those in a hurry to type.

Swype looks fun, but I can type out words much faster with two thumbs than with one finger.

  • Raghu

Next version of the video could be that the swyper lets the iphoner start typing a lot of words, and swyper starts only after that, and still finishes early, and drums his fingers while waiting for iphoner to finish typing.. How is that for an ad idea?

  • Dog Breath

    *BUMP!*

Maybe Michael is invested in Swype for his nonexistent tablet.

  • http://kevinpasco.com Kevin Pasco

    This is brilliant.

  • http://redsolution.ru Andrew Nenakhov

I use dvorak for 3 years now and it IS much more efficient and fast. And stress on fingers is also substantially less with Dvorak.

I’m also fast with QWERTY (use it on my home PC as my wife does not want to convert), but dvorak is Way better.

    Trust me, I tried it.

One notion from the dark side is hotkeys, wich slide in all directions and not so good, especially it’s a problem for Windows, wich goes mad at it with alternate languages layouts (on alt. languages hotkeys are still in place there they were at QWERTY, wich is VERY confusing). No problems on Linux though, Ubuntu works fine.

  • Tim

Not to mention – how can Swype be faster when you still have to pass through the same letters? There is no time lost in lifting your finger the fraction of a millimeter between presses on the iPhone keyboard.

You could argue it’s faster because you are not pushing against the friction of your finger dragging on the glass.

Actually… it’s not “key”… you can only use 1 hand in swipe… You’d have to use the other hand to hold the phone, or set it down to “swipe”. Plus, You have a person typing on the iPhone that is in all likelihood, retarded. I type faster than that on my iPhone with 1 finger, let alone 2 obviously incompetent thumbs.

This is about plain speed, not what is better text input experience.

I wonder what is the stress level, if you measure testants during typing, especially if someone is new to Swype. Obviously you need to complete each text input string, if you wait too long or move incorrect, it may turn out the wrong word, and then need to correct this. Even if the predictive engine is brilliant, it requires a concentrated typing. Whereas iPhone typer can pause any time to take a breath.

I will try it when available, but just wanted to point out that speed is not everything!

I’ve read that Reason article before, and it really comes off as more of a rabid defense of The Market Is Always Right than an actual defense of QWERTY and indictment of Dvorak. The author spends most of the article attempting to ruthlessly discredit every last QWERTY supporter on record rather than actually dealing with issues of design and real-world typing speeds.

I mean, the author could be right, but that article is more Ayn Rand than Don Norman.

  • Clayton

(Sorry, that should read “discredit every last Dvorak supporter.”)

This “Swype” thing has been out as an iPhone app for I think a year or so. I had it on my iPhone and had deleted it. Plus there are more than 99,999 other apps for the iPhone.

  • Irha

That is just a separate app for note taking and there is a hack for sending emails with it by opening the reply window, going to home, opening the shapewriter app and then finding the email to type. What you need is a better integration, such as replacing the built-in keyboard with this one, and that is probably impossible without jailbreaking.

What the Swype algorithm does — according to the Swype website — is use the direction of the motion in combination with word prediction and grammatical rules to “guess” the next letter being entered. It is very different than what Apple does. Whether it’s better or not? It’s simply user preference.

Yeah, I would argue about “reasonable” there.

It took forever to show up, 10 letters and no visible feedback, that just sucks for those of us that are used to blind-typing.

When typing, you don’t have to look at the keyboard – with swype you do, because there’s nothing else to look at :)

I’m not saying it’s not a great idea – just that it is not for everyone.

Now the rumor has it an Android-based handset featuring Swype will hit the shelves sometime next year. At this time, it seems the new entry method will be “hardwired” into cell phones, meaning they will either natively support it or not and you won´t be able to install it on your device in the latter case. Still, we do hope that its developers will find a way to release it as a standalone application, OS patch, software add-on etc. and it will appear at online application stores sooner or later. And if for whatever reason they can´t or are unwilling to, hackers will surely love to give it a go. source: TechCrunch [...]

Ok you guys have to realize that guy on right or guy on left is not the issue. The reason why swype is faster is because of the way the technology recognizes what was touched and not. The swype technology is built by the same person who did t9 and now must have incorporated T9 into it. go to swypeinc.com to find out the facts and watch on youtube all videos then you will realize that its better than any touch typing.

My experience is that Dvorak does seem easier on the hands. Not sure about speed, because when I increase my speed in Dvorak with a typing tutor, the RSI returns. So I’m typing at a modest pace in Dvorak, with minor pain problems.

I don’t think the advantage of lower stress applies in Swype, though, and I’d guess that QWERTY is likely to be more accurate for Swype.
