Google Holding Chrome OS Event Thursday. Complete Overview And Launch Plans To Be Revealed.
MG Siegler
Nov 17, 2009

chrome-logoGoogle is planning to hold a special Chrome OS event at its headquarters in Mountain View, CA this Thursday morning, we’ve just been notified. The plan is to give some technical background information as well as show off some demos, we’re told. More notably, they will be giving a “complete overview” of the new OS, which they say will launch next year.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s VP of Product Management and Matthew Papakipos, Google Engineering Director for Google Chrome OS will be speaking at the event. And there will be a Q&A session afterwards.

As we reported a few days ago, Google had been planning to release at least part of Chrome OS this week. That still may be the case at this event, but it looks for now that the more complete launch will in fact take place next year. And if they are holding this event now with a “complete overview,” progress is clearly being made, so you can probably expect that launch to be early next year.

Google first announced Chrome OS in July, but gave very few details about it. It seemed the idea there was more to drop a nuclear bomb on Microsoft, which was just about to announce its online free version of Office. In the subsequent months, interest has remained high for Chrome OS, but about all we’ve seen is what the OS’s browser may look like.

The only thing holding some people back will be it’s capability of working offline, maybe. I hope it does.

The only thing holding me back is the doubt it will support .exe files. Even being an “web OS” certain programs (read: games, photoshop) should be able to run flawlessly within the OS. If I can’t game nor work on it, I don’t want it.

It is funny how Google always times this non-event (after all, it is still smoke) just after big announcements from Microsoft:
    - They announced Chrome OS just after Office 2010
    - Now, they are pre-releasing it just after Microsoft PDC (full of news regarding Azure, Silverlight, etc.)

Sounds more like an event for developers than a PR event or something for the public.

Guess that means they may be releasing some beta code or the like for people to play around with sometime soon.

Can’t wait to give this a shot to be honest. I just hope Google get some tablet manufacturers on board as well this OS just fits tablets very well.

There have been interesting announcements elsewhere by Google too.

Now that Google are offering 1080P content on Youtube(albeit most likely low bitrate) they could rent content and combine that with the fact they have also lowered prices for storage packages.

Seems like they are making moves towards providing a free OS that would make heavy use of online content like Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail etc as opposed to offline applications.

Operating Systems are going to be largely redundant eventually kind of like how the internet has consumed music sales and is currently swallowing up TV, movies and games.

Internet to rule them all! :P

  • http://omgubuntu.co.uk d0od

Sorry, what exactly are you trying to put across with that rather vague statement: that ChromeOS can’t be called “new” or an “OS” because it’s based on linux?

It may not be “technically” a new OS in places, but if you can dig out a 10 year old version of it to prove it’s not ‘new’ i’ll be most humble.

back On Topic – i can’t wait to see the new windowing system =|

The guy who invented UNIX and C works for them, as with many other languages and important OS revolutions. Do you honestly think it’s going to be “just another distrubution of linux”? They have their own in-house kernel line and filesystem. Come on, use your brain.

I can tell you right now that Chrome OS won’t run .exe.

Chrome OS won’t support .exe because Google has no interest in Chrome OS being like Windows, they’re two completely different things.

Didn’t you get the memo, everything is moving to the cloud including Photoshop and games. And Google is right there on the front line. In 5 to 10 years when everything is done online, Chrome OS will be a mature OS while everybody else will be playing catch up.

And if you have any doubt about Google’s interest to move everything to the cloud, just read about SPDY, Chrome’s speed compared to other browsers, and everything else they do to make the web faster and more desktop-like.

  • Alberto Vildosola

I don’t think this will be just a Google themed distro of linux, if so why then are they working on drivers when ubuntu for example supports about any piece of hardware out there. This is much deeper than just a linux distro or chrome running on top of linux, I think, I could be wrong, we’ll find out in 48 hours.

  • Moe Glitz

Just as they did with Google Wave recently, Google has decided to launch another big Work In Progress Event.

Once again it looks as if Developers will be called upon to add whistles and bells to the forthcoming beta version of Chrome O/S.
But apart from just trying to pour cold water at the same time on other Tech Companies Big Events, these Google Works In Progress are nothing but big yawns.

I only wish that when they do eventually get around to holding an Official Chrome O/S Launch Event, Apple holds their own iPlate Event at the same time.

That’s Google’s modus operandi: Leverage the crowd for everything (and why not): content (websites, blogs, images, video, music, books) and, to lesser extent, free application development (finishing out Google Wave, Android apps, now Chrome OS)

  • antimatter15

With linux distributions, almost universally there are 3 shared components: the Kernel (Linux), X11 (Gfx server), and either GNOME or KDE (maybe xfce too), running on GTK+ or QT, respectively.

Google Chrome OS (from the official blog post), has a “new windowing system”, meaning it will replace everything starting at the X11 layer.

  • killerbunny

Fast clients and fast servers are good for user experience and, thereby, key to Google’s growth, so no doubt they are running in-house Linux variant that is optimized for crunching lots of data and moving around lots of data. Reminds me when, back in the early 1990s, TRW Financial Systems tweaked ethernet packet handling (“Big Packet”?) in order to speed up processing and transfer of images of checks and remittances for banking clients.

  • antimatter15

How do you even know Wine will work on it? There’s a new windowing engine, which means X11 will, by default not be present. Unless they have modified Wine to run, it’s quite unlikely, unless they contract CodeWeavers to work on wine for them (which they have done before).

  • http://www.vikitech.com Viki

Google’s most successful products started out very simply and have molded into really versatile apps.

They have a very positive image in the Open source community – developers are always eager to work on any new Google Products and this helps them in the loooong run “beta” periods, and ultimately they create some really cool apps with excellent functions and very very useful and new features (pick your favorite Google product here)

Google also knows that as the time goes on, “almost” everything would be moving into the cloud. So they are intricately weaving their services around this idea.

They have the resources and now they are creating a big wide door for everyone – to take a trip to the Cloud Land via their OS. And once you are there they would provide you with almost all the things you needed on the computer to get your work done right there in the Cloud…sprinkled with ads and a little compromise of your privacy, but I am sure – many many Internet users would take that deal, if Google is willing to provide so much for free!

Actually in this case its “Less Than Free” – Just like in Android OS. It would slowly but surely climb to be the preferred phone OS and will overtake the iPhone in the long run…Who knows, maybe Chromium OS may also pull off a feat like that someday!

  • matzahboy

“Don’t worry though. I’m sure Google will refund you the full purchase price if you don’t like it.”

    +1

  • Alberto Vildosola

Nothing wrong with trying to gain momentum and create a lot of buzz with the developers community, very few tech companies nowadays can create the amount of chatter Google creates whenever they do anything, good for them.

  • http://intalex.com Intalex

I don’t know for certain if Wine will work, I was speculating on the future… However, CrossOver Chromium is the modified Wine that Google invested in having them build and what I assume will be bundled…

Some of Google’s employees are among the most active Wine contributors outside of CodeWeavers, and have been since they started porting Picasa to be a winelib application (which is now long since finished).

Also, I’d be surprised if they replaced X11. I think “new windowing engine” means they replaced Metacity/KWin/etc, not the framework beneath it. It’d be cool if they did though.

And when wireless is down, internet is down, power goes off, website you plan to use is down etc you do what exactly with Windows? Play Mahjong?

Just because something is designed to do the majority of things in the cloud is NEVER going to mean that it CANT do anything else.

It’s like saying that people shouldn’t buy Mac OSX because it can’t run Windows programs, or visa versa, if you seriously think there’s no room for competition in IT you’re either an idiot, or you work for Microsoft.

  • Mr. Majestyk

“it will happen and no one can say it wont you will either be at a place where there is no wireless coverage, or the internet at your house/office/school is down.”

for the vast majority of home internet users — if there is no internet, there is literally no reason whatsoever to be on the computer. The computer is just the thing that allows them to consume the internet — it has no other purpose, now.

Even for those who do use computers to do more — there is plenty of room to own several devices that don’t.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Valkyrie_Ice/100000498338028 Valkyrie Ice

Humm. most of you seem to be missing the single most important part of this OS.

People use Windows why? Does it work better? Does it run faster? Does it use machines more efficiently?

Okay, now stop laughing and think seriously about why.

Windows sucks, but it is a STANDARD, and compared to Linux of any flavor, EASY TO USE.

Face it. If you use Linux it’s because YOU UNDERSTAND COMPUTERS. You are a TECH GEEK. You know how to work on the machine, customize, tweak, and maintain. Even if you can set up a Linux install to mimic XP for someone, YOU still have to have the technical know how to do so. Linux is not an out of the box and it works OS. It is also crippled by the fact that without a STANDARD, there are how many flavors now? I’m a computer tech, and in 25 years I have had exactly zero tech support cases for Linux, because anyone who uses Linux is their own tech support. The average consumer doesn’t have or want to acquire that level of knowledge to be able to read their email or play their games. I don’t use Linux because my customers don’t use Linux, and I would be willing to bet a lot of you Linux users have a windows machine lying around to play games on which won’t work in Linux.

Chrome OS will set the STANDARD. It will provide the basic watermark, the foundation, the ground floor upon which a true linux based, opensource, freely developed OS that can compete and crush M$ will be developed.

And once a standard is in place, you will see developers starting to develop for it. Program developers can’t risk as much developing for Linux because in the years it takes to make a program, the distro they wrote it for could have changed to the point that the program no longer functions the way it was intended to. Developers need a standard that they can be sure of as a minimum base to ensure 100% compatibility.

Like it or not, a standard has to be set, and the million flavors of Linux must be distilled down to a single base upon which everything else is established. You can’t build a house on a million foundations, and we’ve had decades to show Linux will never become a significant competitor in the public consumer market without that basic STANDARD.

  • netgazing

A future version of Chrome OS could distribute some of the search processing burden to the client device, and then send back search results (and updated local indexed content) to Google’s central servers.

This would be an advancement on Google’s desktop, which indexed client content and sent it back to Google.

The future of search is not just centralised, but for energy economic reasons is distributed as P2P. Perhaps Chrome will facilitate this.

It’s interesting to put Apple’s patent on an advertisement funded OS in the context of Chrome. Having been beaten by MS at the OS game in the past, it could be the case that Apple now is one large patent ahead of Google, and can ring fence them somewhat this way.

The ‘less than free’ model really sums up the trading of user privacy/identity for freebies eg web apps – it is you as user who is less than free.

Fat OSes will still exist for a long time, as they will always have their uses, and allow a greater degree of privacy. Don’t ditch them for the kool-aid yet. Modern processes are more than capable of running apps locally and interoperating with cloud apps, and as memory and chips improve, they will become even more capable.

But more importantly – fat client OSes are not mutually exclusive of taking advantage of the network effect benefits of web based applications, because a browser can run happily in a fat or thin client OS. The question is when do you need a fat client OS. That should be obvious – when you want more control over your data, that is to have it stored only locally.

The future is hybrids. This is why Apple (Next) smartly wrote their own windowing layer but uses a unix like file system. It is closed and open. Android is developed in a similar way, mostly closed and partly open. Chrome OS is likely to have similar hybrid development.

The interesting question is how Android and Chrome OS will relate. It would seem that Google would be smart to converge the code bases, but having a foot in each camp – fat OS and thin OS would make better sense in the short term.

It could be that some time in the future, Chrome OS will become a subset of Android, and even run within it, primarily servicing the browser.

    But this is all speculation!

I am not convinced that the Google native Client is intended to run Windows .exe files. Seems like this is a method for a web based application to be run more ‘locally’ on the users machine.

Agreed. The trick is convincing them that they don’t need Windows on it. Sales of Linux netbooks have been rather weak compared to Win models.

Typical users often memorize steps to complete a task instead of understanding the concept behind the task, so giving them a new tool throws them completely for a loop, even if it works better than what they were using before.

“And why would Chrome OS be the STANDARD and not say any other more established flavors of Linux, say like… RedHat or Ubuntu?”

Consumers know and place some level of trust in the Google brand. That is really all there is to it. Google has an established, wide-reaching brand that consumers readily accept and consume.

On the flip side, hardly anyone (in terms of populations) knows who Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, and the myriad of other Linux distro houses are.

Where consumers go, money goes, and where there is money to be made there will be developers, start-ups, etc all trying for a piece of the pie.

TL;DR – since consumers accept Google, developers will write for Google OS.

Serious question, serious response. Hope that cleared it up for you!

People like google and they support everything they do because of the desire for freedom of choice! Microsoft and Apple are going to dictate your expenses and control all the software that is ran on top of their foundation. It is anti-competitive and a monopoly. To support that is really ignorant because you are trading away your freedom of choice and giving them the power to decide what you get to use not what you want to use!

Let’s look at some facts before becoming Google’s borg fanboys.

Apple open sources more code that it develops than Google or Microsoft. For example, Apple released webkit, which is used by Google’s Chrome browser, many other browsers in competition with Apple’s Safari browser than uses webkit too, and as an engine webkit is considered one of the best ‘standards oriented’ web browser engines.

Apple even provides Bootcamp to make it easy for you to install another OS like Windows on its hardware so you can dual+ boot. And you can do this with PCs running Windows too of course.

But… try dual booting on laptop with firmware only designed for Chrome OS.

Try running another browser in Chrome OS.

Then learn the meaning of ‘monopoly’ before you throw it around like Apple and Microsoft have done you a disservice for giving your rich OSes that give you choices.

Apple doesn’t stop anyone from developing apps for OSX on Macs, and neither does Microsoft stop anyone developing for Windows.

Sure, Apple and Microsoft have an advantage because they develop the OS, but so does Google with their Chrome OS. They each have a monopoly on development of their OS, and to varying degrees over development of applications for them.

If u knew anything about Android, it’s not developed in a real open source process, and neither will Chrome OS be.

If Apple’s protectionist practices for the iPh sniffled development of applications for it, there wouldn’t be only a tiny percent of apps that don’t make it to market, and the 100,000+ apps that are available for it now.

Chrome OS doesn’t even allow apps to be installed on it, or any other browser to be installed on it should it be biased against Google’s competitors web apps with its javascript engine.

Sure someone could hack their open sourced code to include another browser, but it would be hard work, and unlikely to take off, as Google will financially incentivise laptop manufacturers to install Google’s Chrome OS version because they’ll pay the manufacturers advertising revenue from every advert you the user click on Google search you make, for example how Firefox makes its revenue with Google search integration.

So now, just like with mobile phone companies, manufacturers will be financially motivated (the strongest motivation in business) to sell more restricted hardware with specs that work only for Google’s Chrome OS, and reduce your freedom to use any plugin devices with them – even hard-drives, or install other OSes like Windows, and your data won’t even be backed up on your laptop as a file – it’ll be held captive in a Google cloud server.

    Is that freedom?

    You’ll become a Google serf. ;-)

The only reason Google is hyping Chrome OSes quick boot time, is because with all the restrictions the OS and matching hardware has, you should expect any laptop/PC running it to boot quickly.

Wait another 20-40 seconds on another laptop and you could be running Apple’s OSX, Windows, Ubuntu, or even all 3 with Parallels or VMs, access all your Google and web apps, rich local apps for gaming, media work, and sync your files online with your offline local files.

And of course, kiss good bye to privacy with Chrome OS – all your input, surfing habits to text typed is stored in their or other companies cloud servers. There’s no local file for you to have some privacy.

    All for what tradeoff?

A few seconds quicker boot time?

A free restricted OS with some free apps?

Advertising always in your face when you are trying to write even an email?

Laptops, PCs, etc that are built to only run Chrome OS? (Even Apple provides Bootcamp to install Windows on their hardware. Google won’t do this.)

So, to requote your elegant but ignorant attack on Apple and Microsoft:

‘To support that is really ignorant because you are trading away your freedom of choice and giving them the power to decide what you get to use not what you want to use!’

Yours is a generation that is trading its privacy, consumer choice (eg what hardware it can buy and run other OSes etc on) , and digital (and social freedom) for freebie OSes and applications funded by advertising revenue from your trade of private user behaviour data.
