Steve, you are completely silent here about the real issue of A-listers banging on the devs about what they don't like: the inability to filter @ in your @ tab from people you don't like, while still retaining the ability to get loads of adoring masses to follow you loyally and never talk back, and keep broadcasting to them without ever hearing any static.

You are one of the main lobbyists for track filter, and return of track filter -- which is essentially the same thing as #fixreplies -- and in fact it is the devs caving to you and others wishing to silence back-talk, who use 'follow block' whom we have to thank for this nerf.

By scrubbing the @ from people you don't follow -- or are blocked from following! -- feedback in the system, especially critical feedback, is eliminated for the vain -- but thin-skinned. A terrible system-wide development which I've been trying to get you to realize since last summer, but you stubbornly resist.

It's terrible because it's not just about some individual's preferences and his privacy, when public figures use this to block accountability of their actions.

So the devs are only putting part of it back, and they've also disabled another function -- the ability to use search words or search on a name, and if you see a tweet that's interesting, press on the return arrow and talk to them immediately. That's gone now if you are follow-blocked, or not following a person, and you have to try to re-type it manually.

This isn't a technical or scaling issue. It's a political issue.

The reason you and Scoble and others are flogging Friendfeed is because you can reach into the comments just like a blog, and delete comments you don't like.

So the entire beauty and functionality of Twitter is hobbled -- a public space where people like you cannot act as censors for arbitrary and sectarian reasons.

Bummer. I'm getting so tired of Twitter and its endless histrionics. I swear, Twitter learned its business model from Goldman Sachs or Citibank. Does Twitter own Washington? I'm beginning to think so.

Nice piece, Steve. See you soon.
