Why didn’t any of us think of this? The creator of a VLC controller app for the iPhone has just released a clever little app that turns off your Windows or Mac PC (see what I did there?) remotely.

The application, which costs a lofty 99 cents is available now in the iTunes store. To use it you have to install a small helper app on your machine and then select it from the list presented by the app. It has full Bonjour compatibility and even works with with Windows 7.

* Compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7
* Compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and later
* Password protection
* Off, Sleep, Restart, Lock and Hibernate (not all computers can hibernate)
* Control any number of computers on your local network.
* Simple setup – Off uses the same technology as the iTunes remote to connect over your local network to the helper on your computer.
