Sony and Microsoft update respective game console firmware

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Late last night, Sony and Microsoft pushed out releases for their respective game consoles. Firmware v2.70 for the PlayStation 3 adds text chat support for up to 16 players while in and out of gameplay and you can be in up to three chat rooms at once! A few other additions are included.

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

* Sort your friends via their online status
* Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

* Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
* Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Microsoft also pushed out a firmware update for the Xbox 360, but Major Nelson says there are no new features. However, the update should fix “interruption issues” experienced by some XBL users during a handful of games. That’s seriously it.
