hva_pdm2_1webIt’s not quite as exciting as you want it to be, but an Audi dealership in Sydney has added a hologram of sorts to its sales department. It’s not projected by a maintenance droid and it’s probably just a 2-minute loop, but it’s still kind of cool.

Here’s what they had to say about it:

The Holographic Virtual Assistant comes in the form of a lifesize, virtual installation with the holographic effect created using 3M’s dynamic Vikuiti™ rear projection film and rear mounted video projector technology. With the unique characteristics of the Vikuiti™ film and PDM’s expert digital content capabilities, PDM have transformed a 10 mm thick piece of perspex into a virtual, talking person.

So they’re projecting the 3D image on to a thin plane of plastic and it appears 3D to the viewer, if I understand correctly. Chances are it cost them about as much as an actual person’s salary, but then again, a hologram won’t bend under hard bargaining.
