Some Big Sites Are Using Google Trends To Direct Editorial

Google Trends, which shows you the hot search queries on Google at any given time, is more than two years old now (this year they added website/domain tracking as well). PR professionals and brand managers use it regularly to track how hot their assets are, and there are countless other uses for the service.

One use though, which is becoming increasingly popular we hear, is for blogs, mainstream… → Read More

Video: Kota the triceratops robot now available

The Kota missed its September launch, but the 3-foot tall Triceratops is finally here! Back in July we first saw the 37-pound robotic dino and John came away impressed, I think. The tiny giant beast isn’t the most agile dinosaur robot out there, but your kids can sit on it while he/she/it wags its tail, moves its head and chomps down on fake foliage. E-voting system evaluator: "I thought I was going to throw up"

What a great quote! Ohio’s Secretary of State was interviewed for ComputerWorld and revealed the ridiculous level of error that was present throughout the certification and troubleshooting process. The results of the (deep breath) Evaluation & Validation of Election-Related Equipment, Standards & Testing (EVEREST) analysis were that every single system they looked at had… → Read More

Logitech announces the Wireless Microphone for rocking good times

I was actually excited to see this announcement from Logitech until I saw which games it supported. Sadly, it only supports Boogie, High School Musical, Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore and Rock Band. Well, I guess I could use it for RB1. And RB2 and GH: WT come with wireless mics, so I guess I don’t really have anything to complain about. Logitech’s Wireless Microphone up to… → Read More

    Tron actually happened

This is a fantastic story. You remember how in Tron, the players force a computer light cycle into a wall, then escape through the hole to get at the rest of the system? Well, this guy recreated that event inadvertently with his own IIGS version of Tron. I don’t know if any of you will find this funny, but I can’t spoil the surprise. This is a seriously good story. → Read More

Yahoo Closes At $13.76. What A Train Wreck.

I guess the upside is that a stock can’t fall below zero, so there’s an end in sight to the ongoing destruction of jobs and shareholder wealth at Yahoo. The stock closed at $13.76 today, down another 5.6%. And this isn’t just part of the market’s overall meltdown – the Nasdaq fell just 0.8% today, and Google, Yahoo’s main direct competitor, was down just 2.3%.

Angel Investor Ron Conway Emails His Portfolio Companies Over Financial Meltdown

Ron Conway, one of Silicon Valley’s most prolific angel investors (and he was also an early investor in Google), wrote an email yesterday to the CEOs of his portfolio companies. In no uncertain terms he outlines a bleak immediate future, and gives advice to his startups.

It’s the same advice, actually, that he gave in 2000 during the tech meltdown that was then happening in real time. Lower your… → Read More

Eee Box: virii preee-loaded for your conveeenience

Oh dear, this won’t go well. What does it say about your company when a product ships with a virus intact on the hard drive? Does it say something about their quality control? Or maybe about the internal security of the company? Whatever it says, it ain’t good. If I can’t trust them to run a virus scan on their junk before sending it out, can I really trust the build quality? The… → Read More

    Eli Manning’s automagical condo

Say hey, that’s New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, also known as my new fantasy football quarterback since about halfway in to the first quarter of the Patriots-Chiefs game when Tom Brady’s leg exploded along with my dreams of a good season. Anyway, Electronic House has an interesting piece on Eli’s New Jersey condo. It’s apparently an exercise in automated simplicity, as most of the… → Read More

Close-up shot of MacBook Pro 'Brick'?

The Internet rumor mill seems to be stating that Apple’s big secret, the Brick, is really a new manufacturing process. Who knows what exactly we are looking at above, but it appears to be a MacBook Pro chassis cast out of a single piece of something – hopefully some sort of metal but it kind of looks like shinny plastic. It kind of makes sense that if the codename is… → Read More

Radeon 4870 with 1GB of DDR5 – is it worth it?

Every so often, hardware makers strike out in a new direction, improving their product in an almost random manner — double the shader processors! stick two cards together! — and sometimes it actually has good results. The big move happening right now is a vast increase in the amount of RAM available to the video card, even though that’s not really what’s limiting game… → Read More
