So you think that those 30,000:1 contrast ratio projectors announced at CEDIA ’08 were impressive; this Carl Zeiss planetarium projector puts ‘em to shame. The powerdomeVELVET employs a 4k DLP projector system that can pull of 30bit color depth with 1,000,000:1 static or 2,500,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. The out-of-this-world (thank you) contrast ratio comes from a breakthrough in optical design that “excludes stray light and, thus, a gray background from start.” This massive projector unit will come out sometime next year and purchasers will certainly need the financial backing of a large, high-priced university to fund it.
