Whoa, whoa, whoa. The Inquirer says, “Well placed sources tell us that Google is going to be buying Valve any second now.” What? And all because of Steam, Valve’s “amazing content distribution platform” no less? Okay, I can see that.
Steam is a very good content distribution platform indeed. One would think that Google would be able to code up something internally that’s very similar to Steam, but Google has a bunch of money so why not just own the best offering on the market instead of trying to build its own version?
The bigger question would be: what would Google do with the actual gaming part of Valve? Keep letting the company make games as it’s done in the past or try to add some sort of secret Google sauce to the recipe? What if we see “Half-Life 3 by Google Games”? Not likely but then again, Google just released a web browser that nobody really saw coming. So anything’s possible.
Whatever the case, this is still a rumor so let’s sprinkle some salt grains to and fro.
