1 Trillion Pixels In A Picture

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Just when you thought that 10-megapixel point-and-shoot you got was the hot stuff, in comes Aperio and its 1 trillion-pixel image. Aperio normally works with medical imaging, which requires extreme detail and precision in pictures to detect ailments in the body. The 4GB size limit on the TIFF file-format was too small for these gents, so they went ahead and created BigTIFF and cast it into the public domain for everyone to use.

This first image taken with BigTIFF is of breast tissue. An image of this size obviously takes up a lot of storage, but how much? Try 143GB. Yup. You can’t even put this thing on an 80GB iPod to cart around with you. Very cool stuff. I’m sure this will benefit the medical world for years to come and improve porn immensely.
